Report: Toshiba Prepping 3DTV That Doesn't Require Glasses

8/24/2010

Later this year, Toshiba will reportedly release a 3D television that does not require 3D glasses.

The company will produce three models before the holiday season, according to Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper. They won't come cheap; the paper said each set will likely cost several thousand dollars.

Toshiba came up with a technology that displays rays of light at different angles, which eliminates the need for the glasses, the paper said.

"We are developing 3D TVs without the need for glasses, but cannot comment further as we have yet to decide upon when to commercialize such a product, concrete specifications, or any other details," a Toshiba spokesman said in an e-mail.

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Toshiba announced a 3D HDTV with an 8-core processor, video conferencing, 3D video, access to Vudu, Netflix, CinemaNow and more

I never understood why you needed to wear the glasses.

Just put the fucking polarized lens in front of the T/V and have a button on the remote to turn the polarization on and off.

Stupid!

 Or something to the effect that the slightly different angled image is flashed back and forth at a certain rate that would provide the illusion of 3D. Not much different than the way a TV works now.

The beginning of the end of an era!:smh:

will the news and regular programming be in 3D too?

Who the fuck paying thousands to watch tv? :smh:
The same people that paid dollars for plasmas 7-8 years ago...shit....with the warranty...I paid $4250 FOR MY 52" LG plasma 4 1/2 years ago....

they're acting like it's some miracle of broadcasting. Granted, it's cool, and the processing power and refresh rate have to be awesome, but it's essentially the same principle as holding a hologram card in front of someone and wiggling it side to side. I'd be interested in the recommended viewing angles of the sets.

Also, I think everything should be broadcast in 3D. Not the cheesy, "popping out at 'cha" 3D, but the realistic portrayal of depth, where objects sink into the distance like what was done with "Coraline" or the soccer championships just recently. That shocker-type 3D oft used in "x 3D" movies is trite, distracting, and irritating.

I'd settle for everything being broadcast in HD. Get rid of those "special" HD channels that are a waste of broadcast power.

When I saw the 3D TVs coming out I just just HD will do until HG comes out (Hologram). On some Jetsons shit.

The way this lady looks is how I really thought the future of TV was going to be...

I wouldn't mind paying over a thousand if they make TVs like this!:yes::yes:

Dude, a Plasma from 1999.......... shiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Your cousing was BALLING the 42 in Plasma released for the regular consumer in 1997 cost $15K. it was only 480P

Most televisions were EDTV capable or 480P until about 2003... when there was more HDTV content starting to be available.

So I don't know how your boy has a 1080P capable set from 1999???

Will.i.am trapped in CNN hologram, hurtling through space and time
If you see this man, please contact the CNN newsroom with the time and location of the sighting.
Last night CNN debuted its new hologram technology, projecting a 3D image of the music producer Will.i.am into the newsroom, where he was interviewed by Anderson Cooper. Unfortunately, the technology might have been debuted a little too soon.
It appears that Will.i.am has somehow become trapped in the hologram. Following the interview's conclusion, reports began pouring in of Will.i.am hologram sightings all across the country. His incandescant image will appear in various locations for seconds at a time, where he manages to stammer out a desperate plea and occasionally some information that he's learned about the future, and then he disappears again. The following is a collection of the sightings so far.
