Okay, l know this kiddo who is 19 years old and extremely smart. As a matter of fact he graduated highest at his high school. However, his parents will not pay for his graduation or prom because apparently they are a waste of money. I think that this is unfair considering that it does not cost much plus they can afford it but they just think that it a luxury

He'll thank his parents later in life.

It is a waste of money. They have the right of idea of keeping the kid focused in his youth, and he can have that kinda fun when he becomes successful.

In America you are living around decadence, and if you slip up your kids will turn into their environment.

Lola luv or Fershgenet Melaku is the perfect example of this. You think her parents traveled across the world for their daughter to end up that?:smh:

That wack. It's good they're strict though, African Migrants out-perform every other ethnic group in college.

Fuck prom or graduation, its only high school. As in my household, if you don't pay at least half for it, don't expect it. This goes across the board, including for birthday presents.

Its good he gained acclaim for his intelligence, but the only thing he needs is his decree and its on to the next one. He won't even remember half of those dudes until his reunion.

i think it is like that with every "conservative" family no matter were you are from . Hopefully he studies hard get education and move out the crib with a good career at early to mid twenties and start enjoying life.

But they should at least make him feel to be part of a social group by allowing him to be part of the prom and graduation. Especially graduation. I think this is unfair

I don't understand "pay for graduation". What is there to pay for other than the cap and gown? But can't you get those for cheap these days? I'm pretty sure they want him to walk.

Prom is whatever. You talk about him not feeling a part of this social group but in all likelihood he won't see these people ever again in life after graduation.

Peace,

Fuck that. I went to undergrad with an African brother (Ghanaian) whose parents were like that. Motherfucker is a PhD teaching at a prestigious university now who gets pussy on his own time.

maybe they just have very high expectations - like graduating high school is to be expected, not something necessarily to be rewarded.

also, it's not unusual for teenagers to have had part time jobs etc. my parents didnt make much money so i paid for any extra expenses when i was in high school.

He won't be able to show his kids his graduation photos. Those things mean quite a lot. I feel like they should let him at least go the graduation

You make a good point chiyo. It is best to avoid American "values" and "pop culture" at all costs for a looong while. Like you said, until after ur successful. If the parent feels like thats the right choice, it might be. When the brother gets out of harvard maybe he can see what all the bullshit is like, by then he probably won't like it. However, some people can go crazy or live a wild life when they get older in response to having no fun in their youth.

My greatest fears..........

Trust me, his kids will know that he graduated high school. If he had friends there, he will remember and cherish them, he may even keep them in his life as he progress, but its still not important. I simply hope he is not part of the maladjusted youth in America today, shiftless little bastards.

Graduation from high school is similar to celebrating mediocrity... because you are supposed to graduate from high school. If he wants the cookie, go to his graduation from the university where it was his choice to attend.

wait a minute...

we are not talking about his kids NOW in the present tense are we?

Well shit...if you did your job they will pretty much not like the wild side of things. The best thing you can do is make them feel like they arent missing out on anything by telling them "This isnt how we live, and we have ____ so and so because of it"

Must be doing something right. Right?

Although they make up a tiny portion of the U.S. population, a whopping 17 percent of all Nigerians in this country held master's degrees while 4 percent had a doctorate, according to the 2006 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. In addition, 37 percent had bachelor's degrees.

To put those numbers in perspective, 8 percent of the white population in the U.S. had master's degrees, according to the Census survey. And 1 percent held doctorates. About 19 percent of white residents had bachelor's degrees. Asians come closer to the Nigerians with 12 percent holding master's degrees and 3 percent having doctorates.

Thank you these are some of the stats I've seen in the past brother. I think it's safe to assume correlation = causation here. The strict style in which migrant brothers are brought up = No bullshitting through life and a serious dedication to education.

it is a waste of money and time. I have two degrees from two different universities. Didn't do shit but go to the bursar's office to collect my paper. Didn't go to high school graduation either and I was the top man.

Maaaan Nigerians are the true "model minority" based on that stat:lol::lol::lol:

SHHhh keep it down, people might hear the truth , they like to worship Asians and whitey lol In reality Whitey can't even EARN their positions in their own country AHAHAHAAHHAAHAH

So are you saying that he's the Valedictorian? I'm pretty sure someone will record the speech that's traditionally given by the person who "graduated the highest". He could show that to his kids when he becomes a parent. Maybe you can give him a monetary gift for his Graduation.

Valedictorian gets elected so he wasn't elected
