Facebook 3.2 update tells the cops where you stay (Places). Also allows background media uploading

Facebook has just dropped an anticipated update to their iOS application that brings their newly announced Places feature into the hands of users. Places is like foursquare and allows you to check into the place you go to. You can even tag who's with you, neat! This very stalkerish new service is complemented by the addition of background photo and video uploading.

Facebook iPhone users can finally shoot their pics and flicks from the road to their profiles while using other features on their iOS devices. Additionally you can now set new privacy controls for your status updates and the messages interface got a few updates as well. Users who do not immediately see the update available to them can get it by deleting the current version from their phones and simply re-downloading.

Facebook enables location services called "Places" [Update]

Techcrunch is reporting that Facebook has annouced that it's brand new location service goes live tonight, dubbed "Facebook Places." The new service is similar to that of Foursquare, and allows users to check in, as well as geotag photos to a location.

The integration was actually leaked slightly early today, as shown by Techcrunch in the below screenshots, and Facebook says that the rollout begins tonight with the iPhone app, as well as the "Facebook Touch" website. Mark Zuckerberg says the service has three purposes: "[To] help you share where you are. Help you see who's around you. And see what's going on nearby."

The service will allow you to tag people in photos and status updates at the location, and allows you to check in people who might not have an advanced phone with GPS, so that friends are included. Once your friend tags you in, you click "Allow" on the normal Facebook Mobile website and it's as if you checked in yourself. The company also goes on to point out that you can only check your friends in with you when you arrive, and that you can't tag people if you aren't friends with them.

It seems that Facebook is trying to avoid the previous privacy fiasco's they've encountered, and have heavily emphasised the fact that the service will be friends-only from the very beginning, and you will be able to remove any checkin from your profile easily. In addition to this, the user is able to specify who can and can't see the checkins.

Third party applications will be able to utilise the technology, with the read-only API becoming available tomorrow, and the Write and Search API's in closed beta. For more information on the API, visit the developers website.

Update: It looks like Android users will have to wait a while for their update, with the interviewer saying "for Android users touch.facebook.com is good enough."

Update 2: Facebook Places is available to US users only for now.

Update 3: Facebook uploaded a video explaining "Why Checkin?"

The service will allow you to tag people in photos and status updates at the location, and allows you to check in people

:hmm:

Man only people that are doing dirt are scared of this. Also you don't have to use it. If you have a iPhone they already can find your ass. Cats be on some shit.

Why not just disable it?
I did the same to Twitter on my Blackberry when it asked if it wanted to update locationi info w/my tweets.

Fuck no. I disable anything.

now that I think about it, it IS inevitable that some dumbasses are gonna get caught doing crimes via their place updates though

wait till twitter adds that shit :itsawrap: (all the myspace users really use twitter for their shit now...)

dont you remember some idiots that got caught committing a break and entering cause the fool stopped to sit at the computer to check his facebook account while breaking into someones house?

teknology and criminals dont mix.

just disable it.
it aint about doing dirt its about privacy
if i want everyone to know where i am then i'll tell them
if i wanted someone to let everyone know where i am i'd ask them to
forget being tagged randomly
again not about somebody doing dirt
just principle of the whole thing. glad it can be disabled otherwise it would be really messed up imo

I don't know if you're paying attention but your right to privacy act is being violated more and more everyday and people are not seeming to care. People are so programed and have no clue that they are. This is why, in the past, I mentioned the Willie Lynch thing and so many people stated that they already know and want to throw up other or what they feel is a better source of the topic mentioned instead of that Willie Lynch speech. I've seen people post/commented/replied to threads that people know this stuff already but yet things like this pops up and most reactions prove that they have not a clue of what's going on. Since 9/11, the day of the great excuse...things have been happening around us and people are oblivious to what's going on. They download or obtain footage like Ziegiest (please excuse the spelling if it is mispelled) and still don't understand what is being revealed to them. Your freedoms are being taken away from you and you're willingly allowing them to do so. This is something to worry about not to comment on whether you like the new update or not. This is what the movie ENEMY OF THE STATE was talking about. People, please be aware of what changes are happening around you but it may cost you more than you know.

The internet has become one of the most dangerous place, I can see why things like this would happen.
