From what I read DC could not secure the rights to The Shadow so they put Batman in.

The books are going for 50 cent a pop - May not be selling well...so I thought I would try them out but wanted a little more info...because if I pick up one I will have to pick them all up.

I heard that the First Wave miniseries by Azzarello was good, but that all the spin-off books were horrible. If that helps.
