Is 3D Already Dying?

Is 3D Already Dying? Earlier today I reported on the unlikelihood that the next Batman movie will be in 3D. But is that a fluke or part of a trend? If box office numbers are any indication, it's definitely the latter.

Since the high-water mark of Avatar, where 71% of the revenue came from 3D screenings, numbers for big-budget 3D movies have plummeted to less than 50%.

Obviously Avatar was a unique case in that it was basically sold as a 3D "experience," so if you saw it in 2D you were missing out. But then three months later the animated How to Train Your Dragon pulled in 68% of its revenue from 3D screens, hardly a significant drop-off.

Fast forward a mere four months and you have Despicable Me, another 3D animated kids movie, pulling in 45% of its revenue from 3D screens. As you can see by The Wrap's chart below, it's a pretty clear trend.

What's this mean? It means that now that people have had a chance to experience 3D in theaters, they're opting to spend $10 on a 2D screening rather than $15 on a 3D screening when given the option.

It's not great news for Hollywood studios that have sunk boatloads of money into 3D cameras and tech, but it's much, much worse news for consumer electronics companies such as Sony and Panasonic who are betting the farm on people wanting to upgrade two-year-old HDTVs to 3D HDTVs. But if Hollywood finds that making 3D movies isn't as profitable as they thought, they'll stop doing it. And without that content, no one will have any reason to buy a 3D TV.

Sucks for them, but it's good news for consumers who are voting with their wallets. No more inflated ticket prices and no need to buy a new TV for a feature no one ever really wanted? Sounds good to me. [The Wrap via Ebert]

Avatar was the last movie i saw in 3d with real people... i rather watch animated flix in 3d, but they are pushin that 3d shit too much... i even see young niggas rockin them "real 3d" glasses like its a style cuz they can't afford rayban :lol::smh::smh:

good post

It's because all these companies don't want to invest into shooting in 3D. They try that lame ass post production 3D like with Clash Of The Titans. Also how you going to have a 3D movie and it only has 15 min of 3D?

My daughter and I straight got ripped off when we say the 3D version of Toy Story 3.

I can't recall one part in that movie where anything seemed to pop out of the screen.

$17.00 for a ticket:angry:

No way I'd pay to have that bullshit in my house.

Also from what i see some of the ones you get at home have a wire coming from them.

i thought about buying another gaming hdtv with 3d feature. maybe i'll pass on the feature because its a heavier grip to drop for some shit that may fail soon. oh and fuck wired glasses!!:smh:

3D is wack...

Cosign. 3D is the worst reason to jack up the prices at the theatres. Also the least impressive. Matrix didn't have 3D appeal. Still a better movie than most 3D epics.

Besides, that shit belongs in the 1950s. :smh:

That's what i'm talking about. AVATAR set the standard and no other companies want to go to that standard. They are cheap as fuck so the put in 10 minutes of 3D and call it 3D. The only movies you should see in 3D are the ones that have the REAL 3D logo.

i saw Toy Story 3 in 3D - It's "Dying" because the whole Movie aint in 3D. They got the intro in 3D - then they Sprinkle 3D here and there through out the movie. Why pay more for that?

Dueces 3-D! See ya again in another 20 years.

Shit seemed like a gimmick to me

But I was excited to see how it would work in Video Games...but honestly I never got a chance to see this shit in real time, how did it look, was it like the old 1950s era 3D?

Shit seemed like a gimmick to me

It's always a gimmick. check out this list of upcoming 3-D movies. Let's pray that most don't come out. This is from Wiki

3d should have been used to lure people back to the theaters. No need to jack up the price just for 3d. I when i take my kids to a 3d movie that shit cost almost 60 bucks not including snacks. :smh: 3D is awesome if done right like avatar and How to train your dragon. That post production 3d is terrible.

could somebody describe what that shit looks like, because I picture that shit to give me a bad headache.

I agree. Just another way for these ghouls to jack up prices. They got me one time with that XD bullshit too. I saw Clash of the Titans in XD and both me and my son looked at each other like :hmm: "the fuck they charging extra for?"

Greedy ghouls tried to ride avatar to the bank and just say everything was in 3D and people got fed up.

That's what they did.

This is exactly what happened. As long as customers continue to object to this bullshit with thier wallet this nonsense will soon fade away.

:eek::eek: WTF... SAW 3D!!!:eek::eek:

Not even Tintin is safe :smh: And I don't even wanna see Jackass 3, The Ring 3 or Green Hornet for free on here let alone a paid 3-D movie ticket.

they done ran SAW into the ground..and they almost near the earth's core

You ain't lying about that! Even after all the main characters (including the main killer himself) died off, they're still trying to stretch the Jigsaw killings to death! Jeez... give it a rest!:lol::lol:

Costs too much to go see that stuff.

I used to go to the movies almost every week to see something. Action, art house, foreign, etc. But the past two years the price has raised every six months or so, not just tickets but concessions When it went to $10 instead of every week, I went every other week. Now, it's $10.50 so I only go if it's something I must see, and that's maybe once a month now. 3D, unless it's something like Avatar which was made for 3D I'm not paying $14 for a ticket. Imax is $17. Sorry, that's out of "time waster and not too much money" range and is approaching into "there's so much more I could buy with this money" range.

There's a mental level that most people have before they question the price of something. For me that's $10 when it comes to movies. When you get past that point along with raising the price of things that go with that product then in my mind it goes from a inflation issue to a price gouging issue. At least upgrade the projection to 4k digital, or serve better food than the standard popcorn, hotdogs and coke. You have to provide value because otherwise there's other things I can do that will keep me just as entertained as a movie.

shit's a fad .....another way to get money out of a movie.why pay that shit when i can see it just as good regular? fucked up with these movies that put that shit in the title. saw 3d piranhas 3d??

the problem is that you have to have a reason to have 3d and it needs to be special. Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia I can all see the 3d. even Pirates 4 but shit like the Smurfs? that's the waste right there and of course, being cheap and trying to throw in a couple of effects and people aren't that stupid.
