Comic Book Appraisals/Sales

My aunt has about 50 boxes worth of comic books that she's looking to let go of.

I've done the research on how much a lot of them cost, but does anyone know where I'd be able to sell any of them at?

I'd personally do it on eBay...but she's more of a person that likes to go in a brick & mortar store.

I live in the NYC area btw....if you guys would need a list of what's available...I'd be happy to sell to the bruh's on BGOL first before I take em to the stores.

I would jot down the publishing company, name, volume and issue number. As for the grade I would take a screenshot of each. It's only 50 issues so it should not take that long.

Be prepared to get not get much though. The back issue market is dead. Now if you have a complete run or some really classic character 1st issues then you will do very well.

Jim Hanley's Universe and Midtown Comics are were the big dealers that are looking to pay top dollar hang out.

If you just want to unload them for a wholesale price you can talk to the vendors in that store.

You should also think about making a flyer with the info on what you have if they are worth something.

Just so you know if it's worth $100...you may get $20 for it. Yep, the market is that bad.

Mega, He said 50 BOXES but he didn't specify what kind of boxes, how many issues in each box or condition. Best bet would be ebay.

Like Mega said the back issue market is dead. Lots of store are reluctant to buy back old issues just for the hell of it. If they do, they might give you anywhere between 25 cents and 1.00. That is unless you got some Rare Gem in that stack.

My bad I thought I read 50 comics.

Some places in NYC got 6 for a $1.00 boxes...so OP better pray for gems in there, indeed.

All of those books you mentioned at $0.15 each.

In fact, if you go to any bodega in NYC you may find those books in a 3 for $0.99 cents bag.

You would better off donating those books to a charity and getting a tax receipt for your returns.

Yeah. If you are collecting comics as investment you have to stay on top of the market.

Currently, I purchase 'TWD' single issues. Then right before the TPB hits...I sell the single issues at a profit (this is the only book that is able to perform like that though) then I pick up the TPB.

Now, I run a side business as a hunter for old comics/books. In fact, a few days ago I found the original 'Ghost Rider' by Magazine Enterprises number 1 to 3 by random chance...

vpkff6.jpg

along with some other books from this time period (1950)...Now I bought these comics for dirt...I mean dirt. I mean I felt so bad about how low I was getting these books for that I offered to give the couple more money...they refused. Anyway, I sold them to a store in LI that were looking for the book to complete their wall to the 50's and I got a considerable sum but not anything near what it would be worth if the back issue market was strong.

Had the owner sold this book in the 90's when Ghost Rider was a rising star in Marvel...he would have had a nice nest egg....Especially, since Marvel was about to be sued by these cats for trying to steal their character...which later on their ended up buying!

oh shit i`m a novice to this ....

n here i`m thinking my shit might be worth something for some of the numbers ones i have from the mid 70`s....:smh:

Some 70's stuff is worth something but you got to sell now. Because after the generations of readers/collectors that do buy will be gone/dead soon.

Once the digital wave hits full blast paper comics will be a memory. I give it 15 to 20 years.

I disagree a little.

The market is horrendous but I think the growth and legitimacy of comic book films and BECAUSE of the digital age online comics/scans... classic paper comics in good condition will always be worth something...and no matter what its not what its really worth.

Its how much you can get them to pay.

I have a couple thousand bagged boarded and boxed and I want to actually sit down a go through them complete some runs and leave them for my kids.

I really need a good comic database I searched and couldn't find one, I 'm gonna post a request.

good luck you should try to sell a couple on here...you might get a better deal then ebay and its probably safer then Craigslist.

I may even cop some since I'm in NY myself.;)

I've been selling comics since I was first allowed to go outside. The market is really bad. I'm not saying this in theory. I have seen big time comic book spenders like Mac and Mike (History Channel) in Brooklyn get books that are worth $4,000 get them for as low as $200. Had the cat said...$201...they would have told him peace.

Friday is the comic con...You know what ppl want and will shell out cash for 'TWD' issues...this is from the store postings, online request and comments in the comic forums.

These are the last stores that are actually buying...

Action Comics
337 E 81st St., New York, NY 10028 (212) 639-1976
Located in a moldy basement, they have a fairly small collection of comics. The one person behind the counter was not amicable.

Alex's MVP Cards
256 East 89th Street, New York, NY 10128 (212) 831-2273
A small place with a modest collection of comics and cards.

Chameleon Comics
3 Maiden Lane FL 1, New York, NY 10038 (212) 587-3411
Small, new stuff mostly. Virtually no back issues, some trades. They do have a helpful staff.

Collector's Kingdom
170 Rivington Street, New York, NY 10002 (212) 677-6431
A very small collection. Located right around the block from the Williamsburg bridge.

Cosmic Comics
36 East 23rd Street FL 2, New York, NY 10010 (212) 460-5322
A pretty good store, with lots of manga titles and lots of "mature" stuff. A decent collection all around, but the place was disorganized and the manager not welcoming.

Forbidden Planet
840 Broadway, New York, NY 10003 (212) 473-1576
They have all the new stuff, a decent amount of trade paperbacks, but absolutely no back issues. They also have some cool figurines and other collectibles. However, there is no reason to go here (unless you want one of those finely detailed figures) when you could go to St. Mark's just a few blocks away.

Four Color Comics
115 West 27th Street FL 8, New York, NY 10001 (212) 675-6990
They sell only Silver and Golden age comics but do not have a walk-in store. By appointment only.

Funny Business Comics
660 Amsterdam Avenue # B, New York, NY 10025 (212) 799-9477
A tiny place, quite disarrayed. They buy and sell used comics but mostly sell opera-related products. Yes, I said opera.
Gotham City Comics Inc
800 Lexington Avenue FL 2, New York, NY 10021 (212) 980-0009
Kind of a small place, but they have a decent collection of comics.

Its Another Hit
131 West 33rd Street, New York, NY 10001 (212) 564-4111
A lot of baseball cards and collectibles, the comic selection is okay.

Jim Hanley's Universe
4 West 33rd Street, New York, NY 10001 (212) 268-7088
They have an excellent collection of new titles and trade paperbacks. All affectionados in the city should check it out.

Manhattan Comic's & Cards
228 West 23rd Street, New York, NY 10011 (212) 243-9349
They have a decent collection, some back issues, some old periodicals. They also have some statuettes and other collectibles.

Metropolis Comics-Collectibles
873 Broadway # 201, New York, NY 10003 (212) 260-4147
Mail-order Only.

Midtown Comics
200 West 40th Street, New York, NY 10018 (212) 302-8192
Spacious and new-looking, it occupies the second and third floors of the building. They have a super collection of current titles and easy-to-access, well-organized back issues. The selection of back issues and trade paperbacks is decent but not spectacular. Also there is a nice gathering of collectibles, t-shirts, and cassettes containing old genre favorites. Some of these TV shows may be hard to obtain elsewhere. The top floor is devoted entirely to toys, collectibles, and magazines, but the best thing about Midtown is that you can easily become a member (your birthday is your membership number) and for every one hundred dollars you spend, you get your next twenty dollars worth of comics free. Perfect for the fanboy who spends a ton on comics.

New City Comics
836 West 181st Street, New York, NY 10033 (212) 928-3186
They have few comics, but a lot of baseball cards.

Roger's Time Machine
207 West 14th Street FL 2, New York, NY 10011 (212) 691-0380
A lot of obscure back issues, but not strong on much else. The place is also a little messy. On the upside they have plenty of old sci-fi periodicals. They also have old adult magazines.

Sleep of Reason Comics
47 West 8th Street FL 2, New York, NY 10011 (212) 982-7901
A good all around store, they have new titles, back issues, action figures and some cool trade paperbacks. Considering the small size of the place, they are fairly well-stocked. They also have some old sci-fi periodicals. The staff was friendly.

St Marks Comics
11 Saint Marks Place, New York, NY 10003 (212) 598-9439
They have an excellent selection of both back issues and trade paperbacks, but their back issues are difficult to access due to cramped space. They also possess the whole spectrum of current titles and the staff is very helpful. It is not a particularly large or new-looking store, though this should not deter you from considering the first-rate selection. They also have lots of cool collectibles. There is a smaller, less impressive location at 150 Chambers St.

Village Comics
214 Sullivan Street 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10012 (212) 473-3010
A great deal of cool statuettes, models, and other collectibles. But the comic selection is not very impressive and the back issues are a mess. Also, they have a pretty sizable "adults only" section and some cool old horror books.

...with that said...they will give you 20 to 40 cent on the dollar. Most ppl go for store credit.

I went TPB and digital. Single issues are just not worth it anymore.

Ditto, in addition to the early 70s collection plus them Giant sized (literally, what were they like 18-20" x about 9-11" or something like that) mags with like 4-6 head2heads in one mag, that KingKing joint, StarWars & some other shit :dunno:; a couple #1s as many of us had but suspected btwn that whole reprint thing back then {w/ the SpiderMan face I think} & the gradual decline in values through time & technology would lessen, but not That bad.

Good Look on that breakdown & navigation of that database as shit would be maddness figuring all that out without experiencing it. Them shits are scattered all over from Dykeman to the E Village:lol:

peace

DAMN!

I stand corrected:(

I feel like dumping my comics on the corner now...

damn I wish I had sold them years ago I used to get offers like CRAZY.

Respect this man's knowledge fam!

I just posted some issues of Alter Ego. They cover the golden age of comics. If you have issues in that era. Check that mag out for sellers that sent in letter and on their website.

Back Issue covers silver age and go up to the 80's. Do the same with them.

Don't dump them. Sift through and see if you have any popular classic. Prep them for sale. The rest that are worthless donate them for tax credit.

Thanks I'm gonna request a price guide and stuff on the request thread and let you know what I find.

There's a friend of mine who was just offered $700 for both uncanny x-men #1 and daredevil #1. I was wondering if he should take the deal or hold on to it?

really, wow. i thought they would be worth more than that considering what books they are especially the daredevil. how much have you seen both selling for?

I seen them selling for a lot of different amounts - depending on the grades.

I have not seen motherfuckers buying though in a long while.

Daredevil #1 in GEM MINT condition is about $24,000. Which means that book came right off the press in 1964 and was kept secure in the Virgin Mary's ass to this day.

Most people have it in a grade 0 to 3 condition which would be as low as $50 to as high as $600.

Uncanny X-Men #1 in GEM MINT condition is about $85,000. Which means the book came right off the press in 1963 and was kept secure in Iron Mountain with a team of Black Ops soldiers patrolling that vacuum sealed room where the book was kept with a 2 hour rotation and enough armament to take on a rogue nation.

Most people have it in a 0 to 3 condition which would be as low as $100 to $2,000.

If your boy has them in a regular bag and board then those books are dying fast as fuck in his care. If it's not in a protective case with certificate of appraisal from an accredit group then it's worth as much as the offer was made on it.

I've seen A LOT of dude/ladies with awesome books in really fucked condition and they may still get a good offer but those days are fading fast.

The paper those comics were made out of were not meant to last no longer than 50 years. So you have to do a lot of work to preserver them correctly.

yea he said that when he got them appraised they gave him a "2" for each comic.

So all together they are worth $485. His offer was $700. He should have snatch that money HARD out of that buyers hands.

:lol: that crazy because the originally offered to buy the uncanny for 100 extra on top of the 600 for daredevil. Lucky for my friend the offer still stands until tomorrow.

how can you get your comic appraised ?

how much?

and where in NY?

Some stores like Forbidden Planet, Midtown Comics and Jim Hanley's Universe in Manhattan have certified people on their staff that will appraise your book for a fee. It's usually $15 to $25 per book.
