i wonder how many people would buy the iphone KNOWING you HAD to hold it a certain way or the reception was poor. do you blame jobs for not disclosing the info upfront, or do you blame the people standing in-line to say, "i was 1st... look at my iphone."

When this exclusivity deal with AT&T is over next year, when iPhone comes out on Verizon and other carriers....

The iPhone 4 antenna issue has turned into a daytime drama and PR debacle worthy of Maury Povich. On one side, you have iPhone owners who are causing a bit of a stir by documenting and discussing the signal attenuation issues observed when holding the left side of the iPhone 4. On the other side is Apple’s fearless leader who is trying to defuse the situation with calming words conveyed via email. The latest turn of events in this saga has Steve Jobs proclaiming via email that “There is no reception issue” and admonishing folks to “Stay tuned”. Could this be a thinly veiled reference to the curative iOS 4.01 update that is rumored to land on Monday or does Apple have something else up its sleeve?

Tex as I said before you should be the last one to talk. You do remember coming intop the Evo thread and talking about light leakage and how things like that never happen with iPhone because the build quality is so superior.

Noticed you dropped that talk real quick. Guess yellow screens, antenna issues and reversed volume buttons will kill that argument with a quickness.

Apple Planning To Release iOS 4.01 To Fix iPhone 4 Reception Issues?


Apple and Steve Jobs had responded to the widely publicized iPhone reception issues stating that it was a ‘non-issue’ and that this is "fact of life" for any wireless phone, advising users to avoid gripping it in the lower left corner or use an iPhone case.

That response naturally did not go well with new iPhone 4 users. But looks like Apple has changed its stance as Steve Jobs has responded to an iPhone 4 user indicating that Apple might release iOS 4.01 to fix the reception issues.


Macrumors is reporting that one of their readers sent an email to Steve Jobs complaining about the issue and to find out Apple’s policy on giving free bumper cases to address the issue.

He wrote:

"I love everything about the phone except my signal issues"

Steve Jobs who is famous for his one-line replies responded immediately to the email:

There are no reception issues. Stay Tuned.

Until now Steve Jobs has been responding to complaints with Apple’s official statement:

Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

This indicates that Apple has changed its stance and is planning to release an iPhone software update to fix the issue.

AppleInsider is also reporting that Apple’s support staff had confirmed in Apple discussion forums that iOS 4.01 will be released early next week to fix the reception issues.

Readers report that Apple's tech support forums originally confirmed that a iOS 4.0.1 software fix addressing the issue would ship early next week (as early as Monday), before the comments were subsequently taken down along with all the other related discussion about the matter.

The fix is expected to address a issue in iOS 4 related to radio frequency calibration of the baseband. Readers who saw the original forum discussions say that the issue is believed to occur when switching frequencies; because the lag is allegedly not calibrated correctly, it results in the device reporting "no service" rather than switching to the frequency with the best signal to noise ratio.

Meanwhile, we continue to get emails from readers with conflicting results (thanks everyone). Some are reporting that they are able to replicate the issue while others are not able to replicate the issue at all.

Hold the iPhone like any normal person does.. don't pinch the bottom corners of the phone.. and you won;t have any issues. I haven't... and neither has anyone else on this site who has an iPhone.

Ummmmmmm didn't most of the videos show people holding the phone normally in their left hands and thats all it took. I hold my phone in my left hand all the time (left-handed) and i don't lose bars or service.

Breaking News: iPhone 4 Already Jailbroken


It didn’t take that long. iPhone 4 that was officially launched earlier this week has been successfully jailbroken.

Comex, developer of popular jailbreaking tool, Spirit jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.1.3, iPhone OS 3.1.2 has discovered another userland jailbreak in iOS 4 similar to the one used in Spirit jailbreak.


iPhone hacking experts planetbeing, chpwn and MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team have managed to get root access on iPhone 4 using comex’s userland jailbreak.

planetbeing was the first to announce the breaking news on Twitter:

Think I’m the first one I know about to get a root shell (and SSH) on iPhone 4, using poor @comex’s code (since he has no iPhone 4)

MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team has confirmed the news and has followed it up with a screenshot of Cydia running on iPhone 4:

The discovery of the new exploit in iOS 4 should also be great news for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch (MC version) users with the new bootrom as the tools will jailbreak them as well.

However, this does not mean that iPhone 4 can also be unlocked. iPhone 4 comes with a new baseband, which will require Ultrasn0w to be completely rewritten to work on iPhone 4.

Several readers have reported that the iPhone 4 does make good on its promise of increased upload speeds over 3G. ZDNet posted some comparisons between the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 using Speedtest.
I started noticing this on Thursday after I picked up the iPhone 4. The first bandwidth speed tests that I ran showed that I was getting much higher bandwidth numbers that I was used to seeing on AT&T. I was getting over 2 Mbps on downloads and over 700K on uploads.

The ZDNet author was unable to replicate the signal loss issue at his location (Louisville, Kentucky). How much you might individually benefit from the improved HSUPA depends on the status of your AT&T wireless network in your area.

They cant release the Jailbreak for iPhone 4 because it uses Apple's proprietary (copyrighted) code so they gotta re-write that portion 1st (or they will get sued to hell by apple).

They are still working on the "public" release of the jailbreak.. should be soon.

One of the hidden benefits of the 3G iPad was improved GPS accuracy and speed over the iPhone 3GS. The improvement was attributed to a newer GPS chip from Broadcom. iFixit's teardown revealed that the iPhone 4 shares the same Broadcom BCM4750 chip as the iPad, suggesting the iPhone 4 will see the same benefits.

At least one reader experience confirms the improved GPS accuracy and speed of the iPhone 4:
I used my Navigon GPS app today for about ten minutes, nothing to long or in depth, but the [iPhone 4] got a lock in seconds and was spot on. I'll test it tonight going home from work and see how it does but I didn't notice any issues earlier today, in fact it was a huge leap from the 3GS in terms of reliability and accuracy.
