The reason why Vietnam was a big fiasco is that during the cold war, the Russians and the Chinese were willing to pour unlimited weapons and other resources on the side of the north. Similarly, the Mujahedeen were losing the war in Afghanistan, as they were being shellacked by Russian Hind 24 assault helicopters in their mountain strong holds. It was only when the CIA intervened directly, and gave them stinger missiles, that the tide of the war turned. Now the Mujahedeen have overplayed their hand. They have pissed off Russia and China by supporting Muslim separatists in both countries; they are at war with the US. If the US destroys their poppy fields and maintains a full court press, the Taliban and Al Qaida will both be marginalised. He resigned from the position.. He is and will still be a 4 star general with probably over 30 years.. He will probably retire soon and get some cushy job as a consultant on Fox or some defense contractor. He didn't give up all his military benefits and retirement. And yes this has been the longest war the US has ever been in. But besides Desert Storm we haven't won a war since WWII and thats because politicians want to get involved. Korea. China was sending troops to fight but Truman would not let McArthur bomb or attack in Chinese territory. I feel if you are going to commit to going to war go to win.
