Actually, Stepin Fetchit was a relatively intelligent man. He played a caricature in mainstream films, but was influential in helping many black actors and film makers get their starts in what could best be described as "urban themed" films of the day. That doesn't excuse the cartoon stereotype he promoted, but his intelligence or bank account was not questioned by his peers.
