Black Kids Constantly undermarked in their grades

Black males students are constantly singled out, especially when they find out that you are intelligent.

It's like they get a look of desperation in their eyes about keepin' this "******" out of the crop of the top of the class.

Oh, and I agree with Black, it definitely happens in college.

Man, the stories I could tell y'all...:smh:

As a side note Black, I don't think Kaya was saying it doesn't happen. I think he was expressing his disappointment and disgust of it happening...

I had a grad school teacher who knew what a did for a living, knew pretty much how much money I made and the kind of car I drove, and he was pissed! He would just mark everything wrong so I would have to go to him and ask him to correct the grades.

had a professor in community college
accuse me of plagiarizing a paper i wrote in class
sitting 5 feet away from him
on a random subject he decided on
after he gave a lecture

i included three quotes

he said there is no way i could have known those

i said but my memory is good enough to recall 500 words
somebody else wrote

he refused to accept it till i went to his department head

i still had to transfer out

sad thing was the new "brother" whose class i transfered into
was much worse

This shit happens in college too.

Definitely. I went to a fine arts university in NYC, studied Graphic Design. I was the only black person in 99% of my classes so you know I had to deal with some bullshit. Believe it or not, it wasn't only the teachers, but the other students were on some real funny-style shit. I remember being "placed" in random groups by the professors for group projects, because no one else would pick me (yet it suppose to be college right? ), had one group kick me out (korean chick & white dude) w/o even letting me know, no explanations...found out a few minutes before we were going to present "our" project to the class :smh: Had teachers try to roast your boy unnecessarily during presentations...shit was ridiculous man.

Unfortunately most of the students/faculty were international/foreign so for the most part they've never even met a black person before, so all they know about us is what they see on tv or what their families tell them and they treat you accordingly :smh:...I swear sometimes I feel like everyone hates us :(

yeah I went through some of the same shit dealing with those int'l students.....anyway just keep on keepin on. our forefathers went through way worse.

asians are the worst in school. mad racist, cheat, just the worst.

:smh: Sorry, this is not CP friendly...

I'm only laughin' at the fact that our experiences are nearly dead on.

I went to a very good accredited private college in New England where there was only 7% minority in the population of 3,500 students and 0.8% African American students to give you a better picture of how things were. Plus it was a Catholic institution.

Had a prof. claim that I plagiarized a paper where there were 2 groups of individuals you could pick from to compare and contrast. Out of these lists I picked Stalin and Hitler to compare to one another (simple right?). It was a given that someone else would probably take this same comparison too.

This prof. says I plagiarized off a white boy that I didn't even know from any other Anglo-Saxon in my class...he never confronted dude about it.

This was my last paper going into the final. I took the matter to the assistant Dean, who wanted us to make a compromise.

Basically I had to come back during the summer and give him a paper while sitting infront of a committee to judge whether I was academically sound in my choice of taking the matter to the Dean and causing commotion on campus.

I chose to compare and contrast Richard Wagner to Tupac Shakur.

You know what this fucker does? He gives me an A, the committee gives me an A and then he deducts points off for being late bringing it down to a B.

I had to lobby the committee why I deserved the A instead of the B. Shit took nearly 2 hours to come to a resolution.

As I was walking out of the room, he stops me and says, "I'm so glad that you were able to cut off your cornrows, they were a distraction to both myself and your performance in class. I think you fair better with the way you look now." :smh:

From that point on I knew the shit was about me being black and the way I looked rather than my performance, and an indication of shit to come in the future from white people...:angry:

My sister who is in her freshman year in high school was trying to enroll in an accelerated English class had to write up an essay as to why she was a good candidate for that class and her teacher being(white) did not let her in. My siter was sad, but what got me thinking was when my sister confirmed with her classmates that some that got in the class had lower grades then she did and all that got in the class were Asian. It made me kind of furious to think that a teacher is doing this look down upon my sister.

I'm thinking to go and have a chat with her teacher and try to rationalize her decision. What do you guys think?

Man when I was doing my brief stint at Purdue, I was in a beginning engineering class. I was assigned a group with 2 other white dudes and we had to do some work outside of class. I told them I was free any day of the week to meet except Tues I think. Why these bastard CACs only meet on the day I have to work, even after trying to be reasonable with them and trying to get into the project and actively wanting to contribute? I went to the professor and tried to explain it to him and he blew me off, and this was before I knew you could go to the Dean for resolution. So of course I failed the class and got kicked out the program over some bullshit. But I'm kinda glad it happened now b/c I found my current major, which I feel I will enjoy over the long run and not get burned out on it, but it was still bullshit. Outside of that tho, I can't really complain about my teachers/professors. I am one of the fortunate ones I guess.

It safe to say that we can all relate.

I was in English Honors going into middle school.

I was the only black kid in class and my teacher was some red headed cac bitch.Typical big horse teethed-thick goggle glasses wearing cac. I remember specifically that everyday shed have students read something from a book. I raised my hand EVERY DAY that entire half of the semester and never got called on.

But guess what? This bitch said she wanted to kick me out because I wasnt participating enough. She gave me a C for that half semester and pleaded that I get kicked out of the class into "regular English."

Long story short, these mutherfuckers suggested I take "special-ed" classes because they didnt understand how and English Honors student can get such a low grade all of a sudden.

Funny shit was...my testing read at a College level in junior high. They were blown away and loooked like assholes when my mother came and cursed them out. I wasnt able to get back into English honors because they said it was too late.

I was a target ever since I started for higher education. They subtly work you out of the system on purpose.

These stories are so fucked up.

That is why I was shaking my head earlier. I am an immigrant and have never gone to school here so I don't share these experiences but it doesn't mean that I don't feel the pain.

I'm now more determined than ever to educate my eventual kids outside of this country.

I think we need to have more discussions with the goal of changing the system.

We need to set up committees to investigate things like these.

Example.

Committee on Fairness in Education (COFE)

Goals
To ensure fairness in the education of minority students

Methods
1. Using the Freedom of Information Act to investigate claims of unfairness
2. Create & maintains anonymity to root out biases e.g. all papers should have a unique student number instead of the student name.
3. Working with the School Board to create control systems that ensure sufficient separation of duties e.g. a teacher grading should not be the one entering grades into the record. Data entry should be matching grades from unique numbers to actual student names

Please keep adding ideas.............

:yes::yes::yes:

This shit happens in college too.

I'm dealing with the shit right now. It's amazing how a white or asian student can make the same mistakes as you yet end up with more partial points for what both of you got right.

So as a college educated black male, what do you think could be done to PREVENT & CORRECT things like these?

As far as preventing it, I don't know. If this exit interview\final doesn't go well in a couple hours I'll be contacting the dean. The teacher didn't release any grading criteria so everything is up to his opinion. This is the worst possible scenario for a brotha because everything comes down to his feelings and I think he wants to fail me. It has spilled over into other classes because I have dedicate so much time to his class because he sucks as a teacher and I'm pretty much on my own because the chinese students (the majority) won't share the inside info they get from chinese alumni. He's made me redo projects because he wasn't clear about what he wanted. He said that most of the other students were able to give him what he was looking for. I was like "yeah, no shit".:rolleyes: Another class that should have been an easy A has turned into a B or C because I spent so much time working on his shit.

Man this thread makes my heart heavy :smh:

I went through the same shit in elementary, HS and college

I was an excellent math student so teachers couldn't really pull that bullshit but English they would.. I rememeber in 6th grade I had this spanish teacher, I would get 90's on her test, never failed anything in her class granted I use to talk a lot, not to the point of distrupting the class but I would whisper and holla at my friends. You know this spic bitch was under grading me on english test I should have gottan 100's on.. and the person that caught it was my mother whom as a teacher as well.

One day during parent teacher night my spic teacher was talking all types of shit telling my mother how I'm distruptive in class and disrespectful..... I've never talked back to a teacher in my life. My moms automatically knew my teacher was full of shit, then this spic bitch recommended to my moms that I be put in special ed.

My moms asked to see my test and grades, all passing high scores, so she went over my english papers and see that this spic bitch marked answers that I answered right to wrong... my moms right there flipped the fuck out on the bitch... made a few calls afterward and I haven't seen that teacher since..

But my thing is why it had to come to that? In college the same shit I was a straight A student but because I was 1 of 4 blacks in the class my prof would find some b.s to mark me down a grade to a B+... good thing my major was math cause like I said they couldn't really pull that bullshit on numbers and formulas. I chalked it up institutional racism, which is far more worse than some backwoods cac calling u a ******.

Fuck the American education system, they are not even in the top 50 nations when it comes to literacy that is why I made it a point for my daughter to have tri citizenship... she will not be educated in this country.

This shit is rigged on a grand scale

Before I get into telling another fucked up experience I had in undergrad with similar shit, I want to address Kaya's question:

You asked what can be done in COLLEGE to ensure that this doesn't happen?

Well, one way would be to have someone check over what T.A.s and Prof. do as a safe guard against a rubric.

I was a major in a natural/physical science, and even then there was a lot of subjective grading.

T.A.s are just grad students mostly and some have chips are their shoulders because they either A: think they are now above and beyond the lowly undergrad or B: try to punish someone for their own mistakes because that undergrad is doing better than they were in that class.

I mean they try to be helpful (universities) by having anonymous surveys regarding the teacher and the T.A.s performances, but most students just want to get the hell out of there and don't take the surveys seriously.

Another suggestion is that on the college level, there should be an entitlement for students to demand results and proper explanation for grades and evaluation because YOU ARE THE CONSUMER. I think a lot of people actually forget the fact that they are paying for their education, whether it be through student loans, scholarship, or direct payment it is your own sweat, tears, and money going towards paying for your education.

I think I typed enough for now. Will be back...

I mentioned being a seperatist, and applauded segregation, and received

Now you understand only a quarter of the reasons why I stand by it. We as a people were much better because of it. You were always stronger together. If you checked the census reports before integration; education, business, and social life was more cohesive and efficient.

If other ethnic and racial groups are able to do it without interference, why not us... again...

Ditto. My high school french teacher pulled the same bullshit but my mom is lazy and wouldn't go to bat for me. They put me in french and advanced math courses in middle school because I was finishing my work during the 1st 15 minutes of a 90 minute class. The average students were fine with it, but the dumb ones would get jealous that I was reading car magazines while they struggled and started fights with me. I was whooping so much ass that my principal knew my mom's work number by heart. I did two years of french in middle school and a third in high school. During the last semester of my required french class my teacher decided to teach more advanced stuff than what she was supposed to. She also was teaching advanced 4th year french the next year and wanted to start early. Me and a mexican dude were both doing fine until she started teaching the 4th year shit. She flunked us both. Both of us decided not to deal with that bitch again and just started over with spanish. That's right we went back to step one rather than deal with that crazy obese cow again and made straight A's.

When I was in first grade they put me in special ed because I wasn't reading as well. Fortunately the head teacher, a sista who lived 3 houses down from me realized what they were doing and brought me up to a level so advanced that they had to release me from the reading classes. By the 5th grade I was reading at a collegiate level! Oh, they tried the same shit with math but couldn't fuck with the skills. They tried so hard to keep me out of advanced math and science courses. I graduated high school 3 credits short of honor status.

BTW the final\interview went better than I thought and I might get a B in the class. There are other people who are better at math but they couldn't fuck with my programming skills. Not even the one's that worked for IBM and Motorola! I was originally a CS major during undergrad but switched majors because I was learning CS better on my own using free internet sources. Plus he knows that some of the chinese students aren't doing everything themselves but can't prove it. If I could prove it there would be one hell of a mess and I think everyone would prefer that because it would devalue all of our resumes.

Some of the stories in here are just plain crazy.

I think I'm one of the few in this thread who has not experienced any of the heartache some of you have said that has happened to you in college (knock on wood).

I have done exceedingly well on exams where the grading was more subjective than a multiple choice test. But institutionalized racism is a bitch, and an a area such as education that is just debilitating, especially for black men and women.

That's a one-sided story and I hate to say that shit too. But the real problem is too many black children (and their parents) in the inner city don't take education seriously. I'm speaking from my own personal experiences now. I've seen children skipping school on the regular. They'll wait for the bus to come and then walk away after everybody boards the bus. I've even seen a female put her 7 year old daughter on punishment for going to school. Why? Because the girl dressed herself and went out to meet the bus on her own and went to school...all because her mom wouldn't wake the fuck up.:hmm: Black children are starting kindergarten and preschool underdeveloped as well. When I started kindergarten (not preschool back then) I was already reading on a 5th grade level thanks to my grandmother (a very strong black woman). Now why haven't I been seeing children start school like someone gave a fuck about their education anymore? I know kids that are 7 years old and can't even tie their shoestrings properly. WTF is up with that shit? Sadly to say, the only time I was ever fucked over by the school system was when my 4th grade teacher, a black woman, lost my SRI Test results (Standardized Reading Inventory test). Bitch tried to downplay that shit and just give me an average ranged grade. My mom went ballistic about that shit and made them retest me. In high school she made me enroll in Advanced English classes to avert any further bullshit. Something that most attentive schools would suggest in the first place if they payed attention to their students. We as black people need to stop trying to find someone else to blame for our own children's failures. Don't like the school system, fucking home school your kids then. But if you do, be very passionate about that shit.

Education is the key huh? Yeah I had this happen to me a CAC Brazilian bitch left a key project of mine ungraded and caused me to fail the fucking class. I didn't care though because I transferred that next quarter.

dont get me started. i wrote a final project paper on akhenaten for a key class of mine. in the syllabus and out of the professors mouth she said that the only way it could get an a is if it was turned in on the due date no exceptions. every day after that it loses a full letter grade i turned it in on time got a c- on it. my friend jason (white dude) turned it in 3 days late and 3 pages short and got an a...
