Simonson had the BEST Thor since Kirby.
This was great MARVEL stuff during the 80s.

John Buscema was the one who caught my eye on Thor. Where Kirby's pencils tended to be more squared and rugged, Buscema smoothed the edges. Two different eras though. It was his work on Silver Surfer that really put him out there. Only Kirby did the energy circles better. Hell, he created the damn things :D Buscema stands out to me because it was right around that time I got a little deeper into comics, a few years prior to Simonson

Yup, John Buscema was the consummate comic artist, to me. When I was first starting out reading comics, the only artwork that I paid attention to was Buscema's (and later, his brother Sal on Hulk).

After "How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way" came out, I began following him. His anatomy, panel layouts, facial expressions, hand poses, vehicles, everything is on point.

He was definitely Marvel's Kirby 2.0 when it came to comic art mastery.

Definitely agree with you on Buscema. That guy was a artisan of the highest caliber. I got a few of his artbooks in my collection. I have his THOR stuff too.

But Simonson knew how to use and expand the page to its fullest effect. Just like Kirby did during his run. Gave THOR a much more epic feel.

Kirby and Simonson played it pretty loose in regards to letting their imagination (pencils) run wild when it came to THOR.

I felt that Buscema's work tended to be much more intimate and controlled. That's not a knock. It appeared to be more his approach.

Decent read.

I remain skeptical because every character that gets maimed in DC and regains popularity...always gets fully healed.

I know Cy is going to hook him up but you know how they do.

It's like they took GL story and split it into 2 pieces. One part to Ollie and the other to Roy.

Never been a big fan of killing kids, always felt like it was an easy and cheap way to get me emotionally involved. With brightest day around the corner she won't be worm food for too long.

She's not on the list of characters that are getting resurrected.

Usually, the family and friend stay down for some time.

You're right it is an easy way to get emotionally invested but it's also the most realistic.

When Bob Finger (NOT BOB KANE) created Batman he literally took a topic out of the headlines and crafted the Dark Knights origin.

BILL Finger.

I forgot, what's the story behind this? Sometimes I see, 'Batman created by Bill Finger & Bob Kane'. Other times, 'Batman created by Bob Kane'.

But never, 'Batman created by Bill Finger'... why is that?

*I keep saying and writing BOB when I mean BILL...Hard to fight this programming.*

Because he got muscled out early.

Bob Kane was commissioned to make a new superhero to cash in on the Superman success.

Story is that he took some 'Flash Gordon' comic art and drafted over it a dark like character like Zorro. Finger took that rough sketch and made 'The Batman' you know today. He made him a detective, designed the cowl, gloves, belt (CSI Kit) and made the cape wrap around him like 'Sherlock Holmes.'

When Bob Kane submitted his work he never credited Finger with the work he did. National Comics aka DC Comics hired Finger as a writer from Kane's verbal acknowledgement. Finger created the origin from real police cases and went on to write for DC for the late 30's to the late 50's...Bob was a perfectionist though and he had several delays because he wanted Batman to have a real authentic crime grit feel in his early career....then go into the adventures of space and sci-fi as seen on 'Batman: The Brave And The Bold.'

Finger wanted Batman to be like Zorro, Sherlock and Teddy Roosevelt. He also wanted him to be a legacy hero and not an immortal hero.

Superman was suppose to be the immortal hero (DC had no plans of making him pass on his mantle) and Batman be the human that passes on a tradition of fighting crime, defending the innocent and being of the people. (Originally, DC was going to go this route)

Bob Kane got more coverage because he was a more outgoing person. While, Finger was more private and shy.

In many interviews throughout the years, Bob Kane was asked how did he come up with 'The Batman' storyline...Every interview he added and changed around details.

Seems we both go back in time with our memories and comparisons. My memories are a bit blurred but that's not a concession, just an acknowledgment to your vivid memories (and too many years of hard drinking and fast women on my part ;))
