Ok, I got a new HD and the installation wizard says I need a CD or something to use it (it didn't come with a Cd, it was plug n play). Clicked install anyway and got this error:

"The software you are installing for this hardware (USB Mass Storage Device) has not passed Windows Log testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP

Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Micrsoft strongly recommends that you stop this istallation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed windows testing"

I tried to install the automatic updates, but after it finished it said that it could install some parts of the updates including
XP SP3 among other things. I went into the control panel and under General it said I am running XP version 2002 service pack 3, WTF? I never had this trouble b4, but since my system crashed and they re-installed XP shit has been crazy. Now it seems that every time I try to hook up something new to my machine I get trouble.

This is a new 1TB My Book, but I had the same trouble with a brand new 8GB thumb drive and my mother's new Zune. I know I need to update my drives (from talking to people) but I don't know how. Right now I have a 1TB paperweight...not cool.

Somebody help me out.

Peace GOW. I don't have much experience with XP, but the above quote may be a clue as to your source of problems. I would recommend that you leave XP alone and upgrade to Windows 7...are you able to do that man?

Go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management
Click on the small section that says "Unknown" or "Not Initialized".
Right click and select "Initialize Disk" then right click on the right
portion of the next window and select "New Partition" to start the New
Partition Wizard.

Select "Primary Partition" and continue with the wizard.

Following you'll find instructions with graphics which will walk you
through the process.

I don't see this part. I'm at disk management. All of the other disks are accounted for.

Disk 3 Basic, 931.51GB, Online
My Book, 931.51 Healthy

When i right click I see:

Mark partition as active
Change letter drive and paths
Format

Delete partition
Properties
Help

There is nothing that says New Partition (I would try to figure it out for myself but I don't want to mess anything up since I don't know what I'm doing)

I went ahead and marked the partition as as active. I can open the drive from there but it still doesn't show up on My Computer like a normal drive. For some reason I am missing the steps that doughboy001 & LatinDragonXJC were talking about. The thing is, I got a buddy of mine from work who is bringing his hard drive over tomorrow and if I don't get this fixed I am going to have the same problems with his drive.

Should I delete the partition?

Da Don, if I am having these problems this weekend I will come to your shop on Monday after work.

Did you format it as NTFS?

How to format a basic volume
To format a partition, logical drive or basic volume:

1. In the Disk Management window, right-click the partition or logical drive that you want to format (or reformat), and then click Format.
2. In the Format dialog box, type a name for the volume in the Volume label box. This is an optional step.
3. Click the file system that you want to use in the File system box. Choose NTFS.

4. Click OK.
5. Click OK when you are prompted to format the volume. The format process starts.

i'll get that joint up and running for a dozen wings and a Great Lakes Burning River from Scorchers...seriously...
