I think I actually learned something about Tiger's mentality from his press conference.

First of all, he'd hurt himself more than golf by walking away. As you said, it's not all about the money. Golf is his life and his major purpose on this planet has been to break Jack Nicholas's record.

Secondly, this is what I gathered from the press conference, I'll quote exactly what I wrote the next day:

He's no Charles Barkley and I think he really wants to redeem himself. It's easy for all of us to say "I'd get up there and say 'Fuck all y'all' and start endorsing Trojan" but I think he's just not an "I don't give a fuck" guy. It must be hard going from a guy with a perfect image to the most publicly despised guy in the world. ... I don't doubt that it was run over by a dozen people or more but I think it represents his sincere approach to the situation. He wants to be loved and respected; he wants to be a role model.

He had kids all over the country admiring him and saying "I am Tiger Woods" or wanting to be him. Maybe that actually meant something to him.
