My take on this: Gen.1 speaks of God's creation period. A seven day period (or seven thousand years)in which he created Heaven, Earth, firmament, light, darkness, sun, moon, beast, creeping things, man (man and woman), etc.,. Then he rested.
Gen.2:4 Says 4These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
There were generations on earth before Adam was even made. God created man, but he made Adam a living soul when he breathe the breath of life (spirit) in him. Man was made to live eternally until he/she sinned which made them estranged from God, dead spiritually, subject to a natural death and establishing both date and time.
The 6K years equates to mans time on earth. 2k from Adam to Noah, 2k from Noah to Jesus, and 2k from Jesus to today. Which meaning we're on the brink of a period change but I digress.
Creation is millions of years old while man with the breath of life and a soul is 6K give or take a few.
