Version information
■ Version: webOS 1.3.1
■ Release date: 14 November 2009

New applications
NONE

Feature changes to existing applications

Backup
■ Backup now includes browser cookies, so that after a restart, for example, if you stored your username and password on a web-based email site, you can continue to access the site without needing to log in.
■ Backup no longer saves online account passwords. If you perform a partial or full erase or buy a replacement phone, after signing in to your Palm profile, you are prompted to enter the password for each of your online accounts. If you choose to skip this step, to continuing synchronizing this account, you must open an app that syncs with the account (Calendar, Contacts, Email) > application menu > Preferences & Accounts > tap the account name > enter your username and password.

Calendar
■ Yahoo! now appears as a Calendar synchronization account. You can synchronize Yahoo! calendar events by opening Calendar > application menu > Preferences & Accounts > Add An Account > Yahoo!
■ An event's location now appears with the same formatting in Day view and in the event notification.
■ Calendar notifications no longer reappear after being dismissed.
■ All-day events that span more than one day now appear correctly in all Calendar views.
■ If you create a Google calendar event on the phone and the event location contains an apostrophe, the event now correctly synchronizes with Google online.

Camera
■After taking a picture, if you tap the picture thumbnail in the lower-left corner of the camera screen, the picture now opens in full-screen view, not Thumbnails view. Making the back gesture returns you to the camera.

Contacts
■Yahoo! now appears as a Contacts synchronization account. You can download contacts from Yahoo! online to the phone by opening Contacts > application menu > Preferences & Accounts > Add An Account > Yahoo!
■Automatic contact linking based on name matches occurs only if the first and last name fields are populated with the same names. If either field is blank, the Contacts app no longer links the contacts. In addition, the Contacts app no longer automatically links contacts with the same name but with different suffixes (such as Jr. and Sr.).
■Contact phone numbers in an Exchange account display the same label that is used for the number in Outlook.
■If you set up Contacts to synchronize with a Google account, the account synchronizes only entries in Google's My Contacts, not all contacts.
■If a contact entry includes a linked Google instant message that contains a special character (such as an apostrophe or ampersand), the special character now displays correctly.

Device Info
■If you copy a music file to the phone and then delete it, Device Info now shows the correct amount of available memory after the deletion.

Email
■Forwarded and replied-to messages include improved formatting, such as the original sender's email address in forwarded messages and correct inline image display in replies.
■The list of mail types available in manual setup now includes Google Apps (Hosted Google Domains) and Yahoo! Small Business Domain email accounts. Selecting one of these types automatically enters the correct settings for these accounts.
■If you have multiple Exchange accounts, doing a Global Address List (GAL) contact lookup searches all the accounts.
■When you set up more than one email account from the same provider-for example, two Gmail or two Yahoo! accounts-in Account List view, the account names display the associated email address so that you can distinguish them.
■A new Select All menu item selects message body text so that you can cut or copy it. A new Copy All menu item copies the entire message contents-sender, date, recipient, subject, and body text-so that you can paste it elsewhere. These menu items appear only when a message is open.
■If you turn the All Inboxes preference off, email notifications now show how many new messages are in each of your email accounts.
■Performing a message search in the All Flagged folder returns flagged messages only.
■If an Exchange 2003 implementation requires a password, you can select an alphanumeric (strong) password even if the server does not require a strong password.
■If an Exchange implementation allows use of a simple PIN (numbers only), the phone supports entry of a PIN that is longer than four characters.
■If a notification appears for an incoming email message whose subject line contains an ampersand, the ampersand appears correctly in the notification.

Messaging
■Yahoo! IM is available as an instant messaging account.
■You can select a unique ringtone for new message alerts: Open Messaging > application menu > Preferences & Accounts > Sound > Ringtone.
■You can forward a text or multimedia message by tapping the message > Forward.
■You can copy the text of a text or multimedia message by tapping the message > Copy Text.
■If you receive a message from an email address, the sender's name (if in Contacts) or email address (if not) shows up correctly on the new message notification and on the open message in Messaging.
■If you copy a conversation using the Copy All menu item and then pastes the conversation text, the pasted text now appears correctly as plain text, without any HTML tags.
■Messaging notifications now show the number of senders and the number of conversations.
■If you enter a message and start it with a standalone letter-for example, "R" or "r" for "are"-when the auto-correct feature expands the letter to a word, the word is correctly capitalized ("Are").

Music
■While listening to a song with album art displayed, you can tap the screen below the art to display a playback slider. Dragging the slider jumps forward or backward in the song.

Phone
■If the you are on a call, calendar notifications no longer partially cover the End Call icon.

Screen & Lock
■A new Secure Unlock preference allows you to set the time interval the phone is idle before the phone locks, requiring you to enter the PIN/password to unlock the phone. This can be the same as or different from the interval after which the screen turns off. To set the preference: Open Screen & Lock > Lock After.
■If you select the Simple PIN Secure Unlock option, you can now enter a numeric PIN of more than four digits.
■If you press power to turn off the screen, the screen locks at the same time. Previously, there was a gap of a few seconds before the screen locked.
Sounds & Ringtones
■If you select a new ringtone and throw the card off the screen, the phone saves the new ringtone selection.
■If you set the Ringer Switch Off setting to Mute and turn the ringer switch off at any time, the ringer is muted and the phone does not vibrate, regardless of any other Sounds & Ringtones settings.

System
■The application information dialog box (accessed by pressing and holding the orange key/Option and tapping an app icon) displays the total (uncompressed) size of the app, including the amount of storage the app requires. For apps you installed, this number represents the amount of memory you free up on the phone by deleting the app.
■If you change the apps in Quick Launch, after a backup and partial erase, the new apps still appear in Quick Launch. Previously, Quick Launch reverted to the default apps.
■You can access USB Drive mode by pressing and holding the orange key/Option + Sym + U after connecting the phone to the computer. This enables you to access USB drive mode if the screen is broken or stops responding to taps.
■A new option is available for restarting the phone: press and hold power > Power > Restart. The prior restart method (Device Info > Reset Options > Restart) is still available.
■You have two options for shutting down the phone completely: 1) press and hold power > Power > Shut Down/Swap Battery > Shut Down; 2) open Device Info > Reset Options > Shut Down > Shut Down.

Tasks
■If a task notification shows a single task, tapping the notification now opens the details screen for that task, not the task list screen.

Videos
■Widescreen videos now display in widescreen mode on the phone by default, instead of being cropped.

Web
■Backup now includes browser cookies, so that after a restart, for example, if you stored your username and password on a web-based email site, you can continue to access the site without needing to log in.
■If you tap to play a YouTube video embedded on a web page, the YouTube application launches and the video plays in the app.

Any info on the camcorder?

I didn't do the update yet but they still need to resolve the problem of limiting the installed app capacity. Shit pissed me off the other day when I had to delete an app just to make room for a new app.

I was able to update even with one of the patches remaining.

them patches are a pain man. I left mine on cuz I had too much. I did the WebOS repair tool and the Recovery Patch to try remove them but it didn't work. It would have took too long to sit there and manually uninstall them in Preware (since the device reboots for each one).

Now, with the update in... none of the patches or tweaks are working but it shows them in the list in preware and such. I think if I get some errors on applying patches (since it thinks its already installed), I'm just going to use WebDoctor and start from scratch again.

The new Facebook app is ass. :smh:

it has some pros (contact syncing, album viewing using Pre photo app, twitter app style updates)... just missing alot of features key things. there's already a group talking about tweaking it to add more things.

How many of yall are running into bugs with this new update? I can't get into usb mode or media sync mode when plugged into the pc. It just charges. I'm trying to find a resolution for that right now but apparently there are other bugs people are experiencing on the precentral forums.

To add to insult, the phone isn't charging while plugged into the pc even though it's showing the charging icon. This is the 1st time I've been upset with my Pre so far.

Got my issues resolved even though shorter ringtones cut off early. Has anyone been losing their data connection momentarily & then receiving a message about it but when you press ok the connection comes back? That just started happening within the past 2 weeks for me & my sis-in-law.

I saw that twice on my device.

has anyone's clock been wrong since the update? my joint is an hour off 85% of the time:angry::angry::angry:. My alarms go off an hour early, I get delayed text messages as though they're in limbo due to the time disparity. I'm a little upset because I keep my entire calendar on this thing and hate having to double check another clock to make sure I'm where I need to be when I need to be...

go this from precentral forums:

Hi All,

I installed the SmartReflex patch this morning and it does provide a noticeable increase in performance. One word of caution however, after the patch installed and the pre rebooted, I opened the launcher and the pre hung. No response to any input, screen, power button, etc. Had to do a hard reset (pull the battery), but since the hard reset the pre has been running without any issues and noticeably faster... The patch is also supposed to enable power management code that is disabled out-of-the-box... we'll see if it actually makes difference in battery life over the next week...

Enjoy!

Supposedly the patch overclocks the CPU... to make it run faster. I installed it and I noticed the difference.

If you like your software homebrewed with just a hint of alpha then boy do we have an app for you. The WebOS homebrew community just released Precorder; an app that lets your Palm Pre record audio and 30fps 480x320 pixel video in H.264/AVC format -- you can can even control the built-in LED for recording in low-light situations. Unfortunately, there's no video preview presented while recording but hey, it's alpha software bro... and it's free. Check a video sample after the break.

Precorder For Palm Pre (video recorder)

quote from: http://forums.precentral.net/web-os-development/216701-introducing-precorder-alpha-testing-form.html

Seems like somehow we have a version up for testing.

At this point in time, if you're not sure how to install services and applications properly from .ipks, you're probably not ready to be testing this. Please patiently wait for the beta, or come to #webos-internals on irc.freenode.net for installation help.

All feedback welcome.

Software is currently very limited in features.

I want to sincerely thank many for their help on this, including Precentral's Jason, pre101's Roy, and of course webos-internals Rod :) Wouldn't be possible without the community.

IMPORTANT: for people who just generally don't like reading things, please note the bug listed very clearly in the wiki before asking questions about it. please do not post direct links to the application or service, as alpha version numbers will change quickly and be outdated, and please note that the 'preferences' are very under-tested, and it's quite possible that a certain combination of them might bork something. You've been warned.

Install Instructions:
Please follow the wiki for proper install instructions.
Application:Precorder - WebOS Internals

Just installed it myself and recorded my first video, everything so far so good.

do you notice any difference in battery life?

i think 1.3.1 improved power mgmt a little - i left my pre on the charger but the charger wasnt plugged in for about 9 hours and the battery didnt die which is unusual

I switched to the 500hz one... they say thats for battery life but now my CPU is back to normal.

The 600hz one is no longer available on Preware but on WOSQI. They say the 600hz one will make your Pre's CPU die in 6 months, thats why Palm limited the CPU to 500hz.

I have the Sprint insurance so I might install it back on my Pre... the performance was quick and on point. The battery drained a lil' faster but it was worth it for that speed.

cool
I might try it out.
Palm better hurry up and drop an official video update. Even that alpha vid app is doing a great job with that pre camera. Quality is pretty good.

Backup your Pre

WOSQI.jpg

While we have no evidence to suggest that the failure of Palm Profiles to successfully sync contacts to newly activated webOS devices is a widespread phenomena , it is widespread enough to be a cause of concern. These recent developments, compounded with the Danger fiasco last month, should serve to reinforce the importance of data redundancy, even in the days of "cloud computing." To echo Dieter's sentiments on the issue:

Our advice: your key data should always be in a minimum of three places:

1.

Your Pre (where it's persistent as long as you don't erase anything)
2.

A cloud service (Palm, Google, Exchange, etc)
3.

Someplace 'else.' For most of us that will be your desktop, where hopefully you're pulling down your data from Google or Exchange. If you're using Palm's profile exclusively, we suggest you take a look at one of the several desktop sync apps that are available now.

Aside from using third party programs like Mark/Space's The Missing Sync or Chapura's PocketMirror, there really isn't an easy to take the contact information stored in the Palm Profile and export it for use in other services, such as gmail or Yahoo. There is a utility in the works by DrewPre that's intended to fill this void, as first reported by Derek earlier this week, but it has yet to be released to the public as of this writing.

Those who want to back up their data without parting with money are still in luck, however: utilizing the tools and resources already made available to us by members of the webOS community, it is possible to back up the contents of your Palm Profile, and even export the contacts contained therein to the cloud service of your choice.

Here's how.
Step 1: install and configure webOS Quick Install

Follow the directions here for installing and configuring Jason Robitaille's webOS Quick Install, and what steps are needed to get your webOS device ready for the procedure.
Step 2: Extract PalmDatabase.db3

Per the webos-internals wiki, everything in your Palm Profile is kept in an sqlite database located in /var/luna/data/dbdata/PalmDatabase.db3. If that sentence doesn't make much sense to you, that's okay. To extract the database file, connect your webOS device to your computer, selecting "just charge". Start webOS Quick Install and navigate your way to Tools > Receive file, where you'll enter "/var/luna/data/dbdata/PalmDatabase.db3". Select where you'd like the program to save the file, and click "Get From Device!".
WOSQI.jpg

Step 3: Archive, Export, or Transplant

Archive: If you're not interested in transferring the contacts contained in PalmDatabase.db3, performing a weekly backup as a "just in case" is never a bad idea.

Export: If you are interested in exporting your contents to a cloud service, xybyre has created a program, which can be downloaded from here, that will extract the contents from the database file into a CSV file that can be exported into gmail, outlook and the like. Questions to the developer can be directed to him in this forum thread.

DrewPre also has a utility for doing this requiring users to root their devices, but the complexity of using his method is beyond the scope of this write up. If you're interested in more about this method, take a look though this thread in the forums.

Transplant: In the way that we were able to copy a file from a webOS device, it is also possible to copy a file to a webOS device.
wosqisend.jpg

So long as the OS version of the device the data is taken from matches that of the receiving device, you should be able to transplant PalmDatabase.db3 without any ill effect. Just transfer the file over, restart the phone, and you should be good to go.
Further resources

As always, the forums are an excellent resource if you have any questions regarding this process at all. Many, if not all, of the developers behind the programs and resources used for this quick how to maintain a regular presence there. Go ahead, give 'em your thanks, and if you really dig their work, a donation.

I'm getting random "Unable to establish data connection" errors more often than before now. The message pops up with the only option being to press ok. Seconds after you press ok, the data connection comes back. Anyone else having this happen to them?

I just disabled data roaming & update network settings. Let's see if that resolves the issue as well as possibly improving battery life.
