This post and the youtube vid are disingenuous. What Dawkins said is consistent with what he's always said. He said first that HE is an African ape.
That's cuz humans are primates that evolved from other Primates who migrated out of Africa. ALL of us, if you believe the very sound theory that it is. And I for one, DO.

He still put his foot in his mouth. Knowing the long-time racist association of black people with monkeys, along with the racist beliefs of some evolutionists and the attempts by creationists to link evolution with Nazism, he certainly could have phrased and presented his words better.

Racism doesn't trump the scientific truth and validity of evolution. You'll just have to accept the fact that we're all African apes.
Racism holds more sway in the real world than the theory of evolution. It has never been verified as being complete "scientific truth". And many evolutionists, including Darwin himself, are also racists. Remember the flap over Watson's (co-discover of DNA) comments a couple of years back?
Religion is fantasy and it holds more sway than logic with humans and is a pathetic trait that needs to die out.
Most the people that believe in religion are also racist.

This is a good point... I totally embrace science over religious myth but that does not mean we should not be skeptical of scientists and the biases which they hold that are not related to science.
You are not understanding what Dawkins said in this clip. He in no way associated black people with monkeys. He said that he, himself, was an African ape-- basically saying that all people are African apes, a statement which has the effect of reducing the sort of racist stigma you are discussing.
The OP did a shitty job of presenting the clip, as I said last night-- From the title, you would think he just snapped at some black guy and called him an African ape. Far from that, he called himself an African ape, which is unifying if anything.

I fully understand what Dawkins was saying, but do you not see how his statement could be taken the wrong way? If a white man was talking to you and said "I love fried chicken. Buffalo Wild Wings is my favorite restaurant. Hell, KFC is the most popular American fast-food restaurant in China. And you love fried chicken, too." Technically, he wouldn't be wrong, but how would you take that?
My point is that it's all in the presentation. Dawkins could have just as easily said, "All human beings are primates who originate in African. I'm a primate, you're a primates, we're all African primates."
Instead, he chose to be deliberately provocative.

And your analogy is false. Liking fried chicken is a matter of taste. You either like it or you don't. The fact that we're African apes effects us all objectively. It's true for all of us.
