I made up my mind that I need a fresh start. I want to move to another city-Does anyone know of any good cities for urban professionals and where the cost of living isnt going to kill you?
I want to move by the end of January.

Onyx

I guess it depends on where you want to go Onyx. But, as far as the cost of living goes the North East is pretty high. The South (East) is pretty good though, so you may want to look at it as an option. I can't speak on the Midwest or West though. Good luck with whatever you choose to do...

Man, I feel you!! I so want to do the same thing sometimes, but I just can't leave without a job lined up. One day I just up and started looking at jobs in Texas & Carolina ...

It does depend on where your trying to go like CT said... South East? MidWest? aren't u midwest already?

Yep I am in the midwest. Indiana.
I want to go South, East or stay in the Midwest. But definitely out of Indiana. What about DC?

Onyx,

You know the ATL will be high on most people's list -- but not mine.

Try Dallas
Can be affordable, but you will drive to get your daily mail -- everything is spread WAY out. May not fit your personality.
Houston
Similar to Dallas, resurging according to some.
Definately not Cinci, Detroit, Denver, Twin Cities, Memphis, LA, Vegas for me.

Need more of your interests before a real choice will likely be suggested.

Not just any Urb will do, you may NEED Jazz, black folk, good food, too.

DC is relatively expensive to live in if you live close to the city, but other cities near there are nice, like Silver Springs,MD (or so I've heard! lol)

I <3 Jersey for the fact that is a nice place to live, you can go to Philly or NYC anyday and have a ball. There are beaches, and can be culturally diverse depending on where you live. But, unless you live in south Jersey it can be a bit pricey. I'm about to move and we're looking @ 1350(rent) for a 2bedroom (it does have a washer/dryer included though). My last apartment was 1225 for a 2bedroom.

My friend in south jersey was paying like 1k for a similar 2bedroom ...

If you go in the "hood" areas you might get cheaper, but yeah.. don't do that lol

Your skill set will factor in or should factor into your move.
If you're into health care then the world is open. But if you're working as a buyer for a fashion outlet you're limited to big cities, which mean big prices for rent

I'm a business analyst with a couple of sites making money online. My 2 year goal will have me working for myself which means I'll most likely move to Central America or the Virgin Islands.

But if you dont work for yourself and want to stay in a relatively inexpensive urban city I'd look at Dallas, Arlington VA, Charolette NC or Riley SC Carolina. Dont come to philly, its inexpensive realitive to NY, but ghetto as hell. The dudes are grimey and the chicks are just as bad. Northern VA is smooth and progressive, but you need to be earning 75k and up to chill like I'm sure you want to. That goes for Metro DC as well. Oh and Silver Springs MD is expensive.

Peep this web site. Just put in the amount you want to make and it will tell you all the jobs that pay that amount

Try Baltimore/DC Metro area. Plenty of urban professionals and lots of nightlife and entertainment. PG County is a bit pricey but its only 15-20 mins away from DC.

dont you think you should shop around put some resumes in see if you can find something in different cities before you just pack up you and your family and make a big move on a whim and prayer

doggish-I actually started that today, lucky enough the company I work for in the health industry has openings for me to relocate to just about any city I want.
On a whim and a prayer? That is not me.

OnnaReal-Definitly not Texas. I need to be able to get out and enjoy life, good food and good people. Although I havent been as sociable lately due to my pregnancy, I love to get out and go to plays, conferences and do volunteer work.

Cleo-I actually applied for a few positions in MD today.

I thought about Tennessee and Mississippi because I have fam there and MD as well. Those are my top 3 places. It's just one of those things where I want to actually do something that I have always wanted to do but was too scared. Considering all I have been through in my hometown, I think moving is just what the doctor ordered.

Onyx, do you have a timetable for making the decision? I know you said you are looking to move some time in January, but do you have a date in mind you'd like to pick a city and begin the relocation process? Also, have you started looking at schools, day cares, programs your kids will need/want to be involved in yet? How much will that influence where you go?

THOSE ARE THE THINGS I NEED TO CONSIDER!
My children are a major factor in where I go which is why I would prefer to move around family. I will need a serious network when I move. I want to be gone by the end of January.

Playa, how did you come to this assumption from a thread discussing the woman's potential new cities for living. Take a chill pill and release the bitterness. Damn...:smh::smh::smh:

Yeah, the kids are important. You mentioned being able to move anywhere for your job, so that's great. I think you should keep sending resumes out and making contact with people in the places you are looking. But, since finding a job is not a major concern, maybe you should look more into the network you will have in your new city. Find the best school system and resources for the kids and focus on them and possibly re-connecting with family and/or friends if you move somewhere around them...

Good advice, I think that is where I will focus:yes:
This is one time that I am going to set out to do what I want to do.

Oh you quote me now. But I dropped a jewel plus a link in your post and you quoting everyone else. Shit was mad rude...sista

And why you moving anyway. You arent moving, you're running. And with all those kids you dont need to come to the eastern corridor. Stay in idaho or where ever you're from. And bamas dont know nothing about Jazz, culture or urban professionals.

 I am sooooo sorry! I didnt even see your post!
I could see it being considered as running, but it's just time for a change you know?

Just read your post....Good information....THANK YOU:D

If you want to stay in the Midwest the Kansas city area could be good depending on your needs. It's dirt cheap to live here. Not really bothered by the recession, certain districts have GREAT schools(not the KC school district tho, there horrible). It's a big urban city with a small town feel but the weather is a bitch tho. Has great food too. Can be boring sometimes but the good thing with that is if you want trouble, you gotta go look for it.

I would suggest finding a job first then choosing your city based on where you get offers. Also, you have to consider school districts and number of black people that will be around.

I strongly suggest you use your resources (contacts) to get a job in whatever city you select before the move. Then housing will be an issue to address. But knowing where you live now I would opt for someplace warmer.

I'm right there with you Onyx... I'm working on relocating too... a fresh start would do me a world of good. It's good that you can relocate with your company... that will probably make the process and your decision easier. Good luck with it mama... keep us posted.
