Does it make sense to take a job that pays LESS than unemployment?

Re: sounds familiar

aight i worked their 8 yrs get promoted to manager. i do all the work and am ok. so this dumb ghetto broad asks me for a break I tell her go ahead, she gets on a headset sayin she needs my location and we should go outside and talk about my tone. She finds me and curses me out, i tell her to fuck off. she goes on the sales floor and continues to rant to another manager. i ask them both to get off the floor, she gets up in my face and with spittle flyin curses me my momma my kids, so i dip outside smoke a jack and come back in. she's still in the office goin off, continues to curse and berate me (i just kept tellin her to leave) and i left.

this coworker has had problems with 2 other sups and was never fired. for this instance i was given a final warning and told to get back to work. I was fired 9 days later by the DM. Since then unemployment says i cant get my 268 a week cuz my firing was my fault...rents past due and i dont have any family. Cash assistance from the gubment in MD takes 30 days and i have to go to some dumb assed immigrant taught class every day...hella frustrated. So i stopped the classes cuz i cant take it and stepped up my applications process. had 5 interviews in 3 weeks erybody loves me, but no one is hiring...i think borders fired me wrongly but every lawyer i talked to said the case would be to much for to little a gain. any ideas, advice....appreciated...young dude, young family....guess i could go to the army? dont know what else to do..:(

Kinda...if u report your earnings to the UE office and it turns out to be less than your benefit amount, UE will pay u the difference.

if thats the case i would take the gig... its only p/t so u still have free time plus it gets you out the house which it appears could put you on ya pops good side for a while.

The Army isn't for everyone. You already know deep down if you would go or not. If you have doubts, don't rush into it. It can help a lot but it comes with a whole bunch of BS plus benefits. If you're not up to the "BS" that comes with it, research your goals bruh.

Re: sounds familiar

Yes and no. You haven't written an "about your business" plan yet. If you plan out the stages in your life, doesn't matter if you found a job paying 90,000 a year, eventually you're doomed to fail once the money runs low.

I'd say take the job because I doubt you're managing your free time wisely. Maybe your head will clear up once you have time constraints and have to use your limited hours to think up a plan. 9 an hour is meant for two types of people: folks on the come up; folks who failed to plan earlier in life. :smh:

Hey man...I know a lot of young brothas in trouble in the area like yourself. What were the classes they had you taking? Could those classes lead to another job? Now I know you have a family to support, so your situations a bit from mine, but when unemployed, take that free time to contact everyone you know that still has a job. See if there are any leads, be it part time or whatever, even temp-to-hire. Also, you can sign up for a temp agency doing something you have basic skills in. So if you can type, get clerical work, if you can lift shit, be a laborer until you find the job you want.

As far as the Army is concerned, last resort at this time. Not a bad move honestly but you know what's on that contract and you know what the stipulation is. If you're out in PG, there is a office called the One Stop Career Center located near the boulevard. I would go out and meet with one of the counselors with an updated resume and look through the job bank there. When I lost my teaching job that's the first place I went. Although the couldn't help me much (lady stated I was waaaay ahead of the game) she said I would land something quickly based on my skills. I got a job 3 weeks later and been there since.

Don't give up. Get creative and don't be afraid to ask for help.

Well with ur added factors it might be wise, just to keep pops at bay
But if it was another situation, I'll would have said to stop put.

Man I had to decide between $494 a week of unemployment,
And a job, but Im working to stack that unemployment again,
So I'll holla back at them round March ya digg....

(PS. My benefits was available until March)

Unless it comes with health insurance I wouldn't take it. Just look at it like a paid vacation. I got laid off in February. My unemployment check was about the same as I was making when I first started my job. The only thing different was that I had to pay for COBRA after the first three months(my job paid the first 3 months for us). I just took the time to do stuff around the house and get prepared to enroll back in school. I planned on filing for an extension and riding it out till the end of the year but I got called back to work just as my first 6 months was up. I don't want to sound unappreciative but I was not looking forward to returning. At least not yet.

Naw dog. Get your unemployment until something better comes along. Shit, that's your money anyway they are just holding it for ya!!!!:yes::yes:

It sounds like your father has a bigger problem with you being unproductive than he is with you collecting unemployemnt.

You have a little over three months until your unemployment runs out right?

Your specialty is Marketing?

Brah, go out and sell(market)something for yourself while collecting unemployment.

Sell(market) a service you can provide.

Sell(market) an item or items on craigslist/ebay

Help someone else market their business for a fee.

Get on your grind homey. You have an invaluable skill that your are not using appropriately. Not everyone can sell. This is your niche...act like it.

Your getting paid right now so now its time to make the best of your free time.

Brainstorm.

Good luck.

if it got Health Insurance, then you might wanna go wit tha job instead

Nope, no insurance...I had COBRA, but that shit was way too expensive. I'm going to take the job looking at it like this...at least I won't be sittin around the house all day playing Madden like I am now, and maybe there will be someone there with some connections who might be able to land me a full-time gig. It's right down the street from my house, so there won't be any kind of hassle commuting.

And another question...what's the best way to go about applying for jobs in other places? I know the job market here in Richmond pretty much sucks, but I don't know how much of a chance I stand when I submit a resume for a job in Houston or Boston with my Richmond address. Any ideas?

Thanks, fam.

im in a similar boat with the op. i just got a job offer that only pays 9 per hour. forutnately they allow full time. they dont give benefits. but they do allow you to make commission off the stuff you sale in store. i decided to go ahead and take the job offer. im not waiting on my background check. the manager claims that there are tons of opportunites available cuz the co. is new to the area. i figured it would be better to work toward something rather on something. i.e. work towards higher pay versus working on getting a job.

most companies now a days hire through the internet. with twenty to thrity hours a week you should definately have time to put in for applications online. if you have an interview just try to move your shift around so that you can go on that interview.

If I was In your position:
I would get a job paying off the books . Whatever I could find that paid cash that I could leave at any moment. I would keep the unemployment.
The off the books job would be my BUDGET . I wouldnt spend any of the unemployment.
I wouldnt charge anything.
This would be a good time to travel (find something cheap) , or to get another skill.

I hope it works out for the best for everyone in this thread... A lot of people refuse to believe it but we can just as easily end up in the same compromising positions like you guys. Be grateful for what you have.

I don't know the law in DC, but I'm in NJ and I went through a similar situation. In NJ you get denied for your initial claim, then you appeal, if you get denied again, you have to wait 6 weeks from the date of the original claim and then you will get your unemployment. So if you have a lil savings...you can squeak by. But in the meantime, as much it sucks to do, apply for all the other programs they have (foodstamps, welfare, shit..in NJ they have programs to pay your utility bills!!)

To the OP...I'm in a similar situation...I'm still on unemployment.. I get $587/week, plus I get COBRA at a discount with Obama's plan...

A friend of mine offered my a position doing sales with him..$20/hr plus $40 for every sale...(I've worked with him before, only get about 2 solid sales/week) but its only 30 hrs/week and it's split shifts...9AM to 1PM, then 5PM to 9PM.

So I'm stuck too..if I take that job I think I'll lose the discount on my COBRA ..and I cant afford that shit...full price is almost $600/month!! Plus those hours really take up my whole day...

I dunno :dunno:

i'm typing all of this in big bold font so you actually read it:

he just told you what to do and it was probably the best advice listed on here.

there's so much you can do to make money, you guys just aren't willing to take the time out to sit down and strategize. In another thread i wrote down how i'm participating in a bet to see how much money can be made without any startup capital. I've already made about 1400 bucks this month so far with about 11 more days to go in the month (and i'm in 3rd place) There's too much to do but niccas are too scared to get their hands dirty.

i posted a thread with 50 ways to make money
i posted a thread on how to make money doing events
i posted a thread on how to startup your own business
i posted a thread on how to market yourself

other people have posted threads on how to make real money online
other people have posted threads on how to start cleaning services
other people have posted threads basically anything you can think of on how to make that dollar.

Yet kats are still talking about "it's hard"

It's not hard, you're just not willing to do.

I don't know what state you live in "I live in Florida" but i was in a similar situation where unemployment was paying me more a week then the job that i ended up taking. Unemployment ended up giving me the difference between pay, for example if unemployment was paying me 310 and my job was paying me 220 a week, unemployment would pay me the difference every two weeks, Which was 180 plus an extra 50 from the Obama plan.

OK, so I got a lead on this part-time job that pays $9/hr for about 20-30 hrs/wk. The unemployment I get now is $310/wk and is guaranteed until January. Does it make any sense to take the job just for the sake of working?

You may have longer than three months...

U.S. House to vote Tuesday on unemployment extension

Friday, September 18, 2009

Washington -- The House will vote Tuesday whether to give unemployed workers in Michigan and other hard-hit states an extra 13 weeks of jobless benefits.

The measure would help states with unemployment rates of at least 8.5 percent. Michigan's unemployment rate is 15.2 percent, and Metro Detroit's rate is 17.3 percent.

Anthony Johnson of Detroit hopes the relief will come soon. The 32-year-old was laid off from a manufacturing job and cashed his last unemployment check at the end of August.

"It would help me a lot," Johnson said. "Family members are assisting me now. I look for a job all day, but there are no jobs. People who say we are lazy haven't looked for a job in Michigan."

The bill will be taken up under a quick procedure that requires two-thirds of the votes to pass.

"This extension is very, very important," said Rep. Candice Miller, R-Harrison Township, a co-sponsor.

About 100,000 Michiganians will lose their benefits by the end of the year without an extension. Nationally, 1.5 million face the same prospect.

The Senate held a hearing this week on the difficulty unemployed workers have finding jobs

Here's another piece to the puzzle...

Just moved back in w/ my parents...my pops worked for the government for 38 years and just retired last year. He's never been without work, so he doesn't really understand the whole unemployment concept. He thinks I'm just being lazy when I say I make more unemployed now than working a BS job w/ no benefits. I'll probably have to take this job, just b/c I can't afford to move out on my own and he won't let me stay here if I'm not working.

your pops is real lenient.

I know of a temp job in VA with BP (British Petroleum) that I could recommend you for if qualified. It's a professional office position that requires an Associate's degree. The only problem is that it would be an hour away in Charlottesville. PM for more info if you're interested.

Yo, I work in "Corporate Marketing" for a Fortune 100 company.... so let me tell you what's really up.
Most companies are cutting their expenses right now. MARKETING is viewed by most companies as a place where they can make cuts without affecting PRODUCTION.

Unfortunately you have NO real experience or unique skill. If any company wants to hire a "marketing person" they are going to HIRE and internal person 1st or a person that has EXPERIENCE. Especially in this economy.

Here is what you are going to have to do to be successful:

Network with your college buddies that live in other cities/states. Ask them if you can use THEIR ADDRESS on your resume...
Be willing to move homie! Since you are in Richmond you need to be applying for jobs within a SIX HOUR driving radius. Basically anywhere where you can DRIVE to and from an interview the SAME day.

Your POPS is right. Having a job makes it easier for you to get another JOB. Plus you are going to have to take some SHITTY jobs until you can land a decent one

My suggestion would be to apply for a job at Enterprise Rent A Car. They have a MGMT Trainee program... that hires fresh out of college grads.

The job sucks... but the pay is more than what you are making now... it looks decent to ANOTHER employer on your resume...and it will allow you to network and make connections for future gigs.

I asked this question before and I was clowned, I see niggas don't like me in BGOL.

All good.

OP,

you still got about 3 months till unemployment runs out, however, you can probably take the 9 per hour and get some additional side benefits to help you out like Food stamps and so forth.

I would take it, only to be working full-time instead of staying home, staying home isn't good and you'll get more frustrated like me.

Oh, and fuck some of you BGOL niggas, I make a post and I'm called Slowhands or whatever and this dude makes a post and get serious responses and advice.

Fuck some of you niggas, especially dudes like mainman and sirwoodz.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
