Palm Pre Owners Step This Way

Have any of you considered rooting or have rooted your Pre as of yet? The growing # of homebrew apps is starting to get tempting.

Not ready to fully root it yet. Bad memories of the 650 reset loops. I have tried 4-5 of the homebrew apps from the precentral forum using the SDK install. So far, no problems, although the install method is sorta involved. The apps are popping up really fast over there.

Yeah there are more homebrew apps than official ones but the install process & potential for not being able to un-install them are detering me from making that jump.

Tether over WiFi, USB, and BT [Rooting Required]

cool to have WITHOUT having to pay for it:D

If you irreparably damage your phone via rooting it- best to damage it- preferably via shortcircuit and get it replaced

You can't install homebrew apps via email after the 1.0.4 update - that includes pimpmysounds. There is an alternate method available here http://www.precentral.net/how-install-homebrew-apps-without-rooting-post-104-update

WebOS is linux based. People have LAMP running on it  though i dont know why the fuck you'd want to do that

Good looking out with these links!

I just manage to get mine yesterday. Ninjas had been copping these suckas since day one in Houston.

My initial impression is the webos is very intuitive. The shit just works like you think it should. There is very little fighting or searching for a functions or guessing how it works.

A couple more nice touches are the blue tooth pairing and built in search for shortcuts. When pairing it is not necessary to key in 0000 in order to authenticate and when using the keyboard it brings up Apps based on a first letter shortcut scheme, i.e. type in "Y" brings up youtube. It appears that Palm is back and the industry will be better for it.

I bought the full phone Invisishield to put as an additional layer of protection for my phone & GATDAMN is that thing a pain in the ass to install. It was pissing me off so much that I chalked it up as an L & just put a regular screen cover on my phone before re-installing my hardcase. If you go out & buy one then I recommend having someone install that shit for you to save you from unneccesary headaches. :smh::angry::smh:

did you read the threads on installing it? watch the videos?
I got the phantomskinz on the way to me now but just the front since the touchstone back is matte. Any scratches on the matte cover wipe right off with a lil water.
Those custom shields will repair slight scratches too.

There are some crucial tips for installin those things - steamy bathroom, wet hands, start at the bottom or top and work up/down

you can get someone to install it for $5 at the mall or the closest spot- prolly BB or somewhere near co-op city is bound to do it

I'm using a universal screen protector cut to fit the screen right now. My holster was $5 at Menards. This is temporary till Speck gets off their ass and makes a case for us. Best 650/700 case I ever saw. Its discontinued, so check out their toughskins like this eyephone version.

not sure if i like that toughskin - looks cool for people using their phones for work like cable installers or utility company personnel

i want a case that doesnt really drastically change the identity of the phone and also accomodates the touchstone cover

any of you cats in NYC? honestly, how is sprint's call quality up here?
cli can tell you

hey not sure how many of you use the AP News app but that shit is dope
there are tons of headlines and press release categories to use and customize it with and it will add local data based on zip code or gps- I hadnt really used it beyond the default config until now.
Pandora is dope too. I have been using LastFM and still like it better than pandora since the community is better and the interaction is cooler with scrobbling and device interaction but Pandora's stations seem to pick music way better.

Any Volvo owners here with a Pre? Does it work well with your bluetooth or ipod connections?

Sprint is excellent in the NY/NJ/CT area. When it comes to phone & data service Verizon & Sprint have it on lock with Sprint having the edge on the data side.

 That's what I'm saying. My stubborn ass was there thinking I'm savy enough so this should be a piece of cake. SHEEEEEIIIIIIITTTTTTT!! That damn Invisishield was pissing me off to the highest level of pisstivity. I could've bout a used PS3 game with the money I wasted on it. Hell that's close to 3/4 tank of gas for me.

old age has taught me avoidance of aggrivation > some amounts of money
that depends on the amount of aggrivation and the amount of money

We have some really good rumblings in the Homebrew scene. The most exciting is that forum member greg_roll is currently rolling up a desktop installer for Windows for installing apps directly. It's on version 0.8 now and coming along quite well. You'll still need to put your Pre into Developer mode to use it, but stay tuned as this one progresses. Also notable, dhMassacre has adapted greg_roll's app so it has a full Graphical User Interface.

Also progressing: Active Home Screen for the Pre. Forum member mapara, like many of us, wished the Pre had a Today Screen like Windows Mobile and Android. So he's started putting one together. There are currently Weather and News Widgets, links to apps, and a small Task widget working. This is still alpha, so no downloads yet, but the idea of making an app/card into a homescreen with its own widgets doesn't seem to shabby.

Finally, yes folks, there is now a Fart App for the Palm Pre in the Homebrew forums. If nothing else, it's yet another milestone in the Pre's trek towards completing the necessary steps of all new smartphones: Getting Rooted, Running Doom, Running Apache, Running a NES or MAME Emulator, and now the Fart App.

Catch some screenshots of Active Home Screen after the break!

man you see where the Pre is headed with homebrew alone even if Palm doesn't do what they have to
its like the good shit from winmo and the iphone in one with different better hardware

I agree. I just wish we could install the apps without having to put the phone into development mode. They need to hurry up & streamline the homebrew process cuz my trigger finger is getting antsy.

Im tryin to find a store or kiosk that will install phantom skinz in the chicago area. Any ideas? Im on the westside of Chicago

look for a spot that does best skins ever or other skins and they can do it for you- just buy it yourself and take it to them and make sure they dont fuck it up

just got my skinz and charger in the mail today

someone just put this vid up of them doing for self yesterday

http://www.everythingpre.com/forum/palm-pre-cases/i-made-a-video-of-my-phantom-skinz-22013.html

they send you two kits for the price of one and you only need the front if you use a touchstone so that's 2 for 6bucks and it aint that hard I dont think
im gonna read up and do it myself

edit* i hit up one of the owners who posts on a pre site to see if he has any partners in chitown, Ill let you know what he says

can you explain what i can do with this wifi?

Depends on where you spend the most time. Work/school/resturants have wifi access. Gives you the ability to surf/email at higher speeds.

Example: Stuck waiting at the dr.'s office for an hour. While I only have 3-4 bars of sprint data service, its taking over a minute to open a web page. Switching to the hospital's public wifi is a much faster connection then sprint even with full bars.

Do you have a wireless router in your home???

Thanks to the pre, I'm getting one next week.

How about the Treo PRO by Palm vs. the Palm Pre???

They are offered at the same price. Treo has Microsoft mobile, touchscreen and qwerty, wifi...only drawback is that it doesn't have the new operating system, and it's not a world phone, and the keyboard is small (but so is the Pre)...

Is it advisable to consider purchasing the Treo PRO over the Palm? (Looking to buy one or the other TODAY)

Also, if a phone has wifi, does that mean you can drop the data plan and still access the internet with the phone? Excuse my ignorance...thanks in advance
