if your friend said this and he is in harvard med he is wasting his money. cardiac arrest is so sudden you dont have a chance for a transplant and plus you gotta find a matching donor and coodinate it. besides just because he went into arrest doesnt mean he needed a transplant it just means that something at the time made his heart stop. he could have had the most healthy heart in the world and still went into arrest. if they could have revived him there still would have been no need for a transplant.

It's NEVER worked (or been tried) on a patient who's in cardiac arrest unrelated to a scheduled transplant operation. That's not the idea behind it. THE PATIENT HAS TO BE STABLE. You have to SAVE him as he is first, and not stop to perform a needless 10-hour heart operation without even knowing the cause of the problem.

I work in an ICU where people arrest everyday and it has never during my tenure been suggested a heart transplant just for cardiac arrest. you fix the problem that led to the arrest and then the heart goes back to functioning correctly unless there is underlying heart disease. we have no proof that he had heart disease

maybe in an infant or young child in nearly freezing circumstances on rare occasions. and only then because the oxygen demand for the brain is greatly decreased due to decreased metabolism during the freezing state. it is not the norm or even remotely common for the brain to function or live after 5 minutes of anoxia. i have seen it too many times.

I'm an RN for 5 years now. we see cardiac arrest commonly. Many people survive if it happens in ICU but if it happens out in the community prognosis aint that good.
Thats why when we heard the news at work that he was in arrest before they announced he was dead we knew he was dead. because its is hard to get the heart restarted after cardiac arrest if you do not know the reason it stopped and are out of the hospital and away from ACLS drugs and a defibrillator.

it is exciting/fast paced. my 12hrs go by so quick. especially on fridays and saturdays cause we r 1 of 2 trauma centers in Long Beach
do that shit in this life. my next step is med school. i shoulda done it in the first place but i was discouraged seeing the shit my dad had to go through to become a doc. now looking back i shoulda manned up and did it the first time around.
i would love to do trauma/general surgery in the ER
thats a cool gig... in my next life i hope to do something like that.... a doc/rn, or whatever. that line of work always intrigued me. props..

First of all there are circumstances that are different than the MJ case, number one, most likely the boy fell into freezing water, triggering an altered state of being for the boy (where his system is in a suspended state, heart rate is lowered, oxygen is prioritised to the brain, organs shut down, and breathing stops.) In freezing temperatures a body can remain in this suspended state for as long as a hour - this is why the body temp is lowered during certain heart operations where the heart is arrested.
In MJ's case his body was not frozen or in a suspended state, like Alex said, there is no way you can find a proper doner in that quick period of time. If MJ was suffering from a heart condition that subjected him to cardiac arrest, then perhaps they could have given a life saving heart, ahead of time.
But in this case, it was way too late to do anything to save Jackson.
