"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?........ why call him God?"

Omniscience and free will are incompatible ideas. if god knows what you are going to do already, then you, necessarily, do not have free will. So, either there is a god and he/she knows everything and you do not have free will. Or, there is no God...

Not necessarily. I'm not saying I'm a "Holy Roller" but at the same time God knowing what you're going to do before you do it doesn't excuse the fact that you chose to do what you did, when you did it.

Which begs the question why go through this process in the first place.

That's why my mom stop taking me to church. I had to many questions, and I didn't always accept the answers.

I hate that crap.

I don't have a problem with faith, so to speak, but sometimes it seems like some of these people use this as an excuse to turn off their brains.

We operate using a multitude of systems including nervous systems and chemical reactions. Mechanical systems as well. Energy can't be destroyed, only changed to another state. But how that translates to the Jesus claim blows me away, people talk about the non-existence of your friends and family. I don't think of it that way. Time is a dimension that is not fixed. It can be manipulated, and it can be measured differently by different brains. It is our brains that perceive time and the rate at which time travels. Small insects like flies have extremely fast reflexes because their brain is small. Dumb but fast as their thought processes are very simple. So I would argue that they see time at a different rate than we do. Even we perceive time differently depending on what we are doing. Staring at a clock slows perception of time. So think of time as a similar dimension to that of space. It exists, and you are on it's path and you are traveling at a variable rate dependent on your perception. Your friends also exist on it as well, but at a different location. You can't see them now because you are at a different location in time. Due to limitations in our laws of physics and our brains, you also can't communicate with them from this point in time. But you did when you were there. So they exist as do you. And 2 million years from now, that won't change. The people that exist then will think that you don't exist as we don't think they exist, but it's all just perception based on our point of reference. It's all relative. That's why it's so important to have a good life and help others do the same. It's our only life. And life is never short or long. It's always your entire life.

This is cool. You recommend any reading that follows your assessment?

Exactly, these guys kill me looking for a religous debate on a poard board.

Anyway i'll bite somewhat. Good and evil are products of the greater good of free will.
If you want evil taken away, then free will must be taken away as well.

I hate when cats here say that. BGOL has developed to more that just a porn board. You can get more than porn here lots more. You can get laughs, Life/job advise, you can even get study guides to your gmats on bgol. When the last time you seen the front page filled with porn?

Is this along the lines of determinism?...I learned it like this as a solution to this paradox of omniscience...that yes, God is omniscient, and if he wanted he could know every choice we made, which would renig on our free will. However, he chooses NOT to look into the future and see our choices...essentially giving us a chance to make our own choice...lowering himself to our level so to speak...otherwise it would not be fair to us

God is real. He has given me many blessings. The more I trust him to be in my life, the more blessings I have received. That's all I'm going to say because this is a porn board.

People always praise God for the good but get mad when he is blamed for the bad. What if some fool ran up in your crib and killed your entire family and left you paralyzed from the neck down. Would you praise and thank God then? There are countless wonderful people who get fscrewed over everyday what has God done for them?

That's how you rule a country.. GW did it for 8 years.

This child has hit upon the gist of it.

I check BGOL from time to time, follow the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Rays a bit, permit the occasional miracle... aside from that I haven't been active in your world for a long time.

As a matter of fact, I have not listened to a single prayer since your stupid economy collapsed, so you can stop wasting your time nagging me with that shit.

The Blackman is God.

Very good perspective dude.

Here's my take.

First off, jetison the notion of good and evil as determined by religious/theistic dogma.

This notion of good and evil are relative to the societal ethical baselines defined by, ultimately, the aristocracy or basically whoever runs shit at the time.

Secondly, dispell any notion of a God that acts from outside of the universe and could act against the physical and/or metaphysical laws of nature.

Thirdly, think of the universe as a cybernetic system where God is the environment (whole) and we all exist in his image (as parts, but the same) along with everything else in the system (cosmos and other intelligent life).

As far as science is concerned, the universe is a mixture of deterministic and stochastic phenomena which are described/governed by testable theories (classical and quantum mechanics)

The pertinent question should be "Is determinism compatable with free will?"

The argument of determinism (cause = effect) versus indeterminism (stochastics, probability) and their compatibility with "free will" is an age old debate involving philosopy and science and ultimately crystalizes into a paradox limited by thier very own definitions.

If physical determinism is true, then there is no such thing as free will. Everything has already been set in the universe through the laws of physics.

If physical indeterminism is true, then we can't be held responsible for our decisions which would be ultimately randomly generated by our nervous system.

Then burden of demonstrating that ones actions stems from his/her pure character becomes the new issue. How do you determine this character outside of a observed deterministic universe?

Basically, how do you reduce consciousness? Can you?

Solve that and you're God.

Then you can PM the OP with the answer to his question.

All of you are going to hell.

there you go again. Now you are telling people that they might go to a place as real as middle earth.

Below are 3 of the most brilliant concepts about 'God' I've ever read. This guy let the words flow from his mind like he was born to write them. Shit is so deep just had to share it. You don't have to believe these words. If you try to rationalize it you'll come up short. Roll with it. I only ask that you read these paragraphs with an open mind.

Number 3 captures the mystique and the last paragraph sums up reality (for me)

1. I am an alien. My technology, presence, and understanding grant me abilities far outside the reach of mankind's present limited capacity for comprehension. My age is inconsequential, as my past deeds and communications will stand against time itself as the "word". My magnificence in the eyes of mankind's simplicity has garnered me immortality. My understandings so far outweigh man's that my will changes the course of evolution itself. Those that I choose to be vessels of my ideology speak with the fervor of men possessed- because they in fact are. The mythology that has arisen around me is mostly imaginary, a product of man seeking to understand what they cannot comprehend. Of course, I have imparted my own views of right and wrong, and while I have both caused and prevented catastrophe, I do so at my own choosing. Mankind, "at the end of the day" is little more than an intriguing, sandboxed species with whom I only occasionally interact, and then for no other reason than because I am bored.

2. I am impossible. I do not exist beyond the imaginations of those who created then embodied me to grant relevance to their existence and to serve as the end-all, be-all when the eternal question is asked. "Why?" Because I will it so. I am an idea; an explanation when no other can be found. I am an emotional stabilizer. The notion of the natural chaos of the Universe being my wrath is used as a tool to influence and enslave. Events occur. I neither allow nor prevent anything, because I am only a notion. I am only there in the minds of those who have be trained to see me where there is nothing.

3. I am infinity. To simply be "infinite" suggests a state of being wherein others may share the condition. I am not "infinite". I am infinity itself. I am the ever-presence that permeates all. I have no purpose other than to "be". I have no will. I simply "am". Incidents do not occur because of me. They occur as a part of me. There is no positive or negative. There are no accidents. If something happens, it is as it should be. There is only balance. The God that is simultaneously worshipped and cursed is not me. That God is a fabrication of mankind's imagination and curiosity and as such is so much smaller than what I am. I did not create nor do I care about mankind. I am impartial. Mankind, like the rest of existence, past present and future, is a part of me- a part that grows, evolves, and dies within me, free to examine it's own sentience and question it's purpose. To that end though, I am not merely all of existence. I am greater than the matter than comprises me, but because of that, I am impossible to all that are not me. I, in fact, have no sentience of my own. I cannot. For me to be "aware" I must be limited in my capacity. Surely to be aware of all things within me, I must also be aware of all things around me. And yet, there can be nothing greater than God. Therefore, I am all- the breath people take, the ground they walk on, the life they live, the ideas they conjure, the sun that illuminates their way, and even that thing they can't remember. I have no power to speak of though. I do not speak with or through anyone or anything. I do not sway the tide of any condition. I am not capable of being involved beyond simply existing as every part of everything.

Disasters must happen. The Earth changes and grows just as we do. Whatever name is granted to malevolence, it too must always exist; for without the evil born of our self awareness, we could not comprehend it's opposite- good. Mankind is simply an animal. Granted, we are a very unique animal with the ability to see beyond what is material and obvious, but that same ability lends to us an incredible arrogance and ignorance. We can lament the causes of tragedy or we use our resources to avert and correct them. There will also always be those with more of something- something that grants them an edge that they will use either beneficially, malevolently, or not at all. That's life, and that's "all" God really is; life.

SHEEIIIT!!!

Haven't you heard? That's where the party's at! The most grand Playas Ball of all eternity! All the non-repentant hoes you can shake your dick at will be there. Some of the greatest musicians ever too, after all, didn't they all sell their souls to get that fame and so forth?

LMAOOO!!!!

Evil is here as a by-product of free will. Its proof that man is operating under his own free will with greed, sexual perversions, violence and so on. God didn't create evil.

All matters have been foreseen by him, so why does he allow evil to occur/exist? Because its not a lesson for God but a lesson for man for the sake of his infinite existence. Mankind will learn from the lessons of his evil acts and turn away from it forever. Without that accelerated lesson, we would question God's right to authority for all eternity because he would keep eliminating those who have bad ideas. Hence, we wouldn't have free will.

Evil is a product of man's free will, our current existence is much like a kid in kindergarten when we have a long ways to go for exposure to our real intended purpose in infinity. But first we gotta get past evil 101.

For god to know something, it necessarily has to already be true. if it is true, then it is your destiny and you have no way around it. even your attempts to circumvent your destiny are already true/known.

You guys are not able to comprehend. In comparison to eternity our lives on this earth is infinitely miniscule. The suffering felt here is comparable to the pain you feel when a mosquito bites you.

We get caught up in those who are successful that are evil and vice versa, but in the grand scheme of things it's worthless.

God explaining his ways to us, or his mindset is like an astrophycisist explaining astro physics to a 2 year old.

AS A WHOLE NIGGA ASS NIGGAS CAN'T EVEN MAKE IT THROUGH HIGHSCHOOL. THEY CANNOT EVEN BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND GOD'S GREATNESS NOR HIS WAY OF DOING THINGS?. THEY WILL TRY AND FAIL LIKE ALWAYS.

God gave man free will. You have the will to do as you please. If God willed all of us to do nothing but good, then we would be living in Heaven and not here on earth. The bible says this is the Devil's world. In this vast universe, there are places that are better and much worse than what we deal with here on earth.

A-men

so then are you saying only dummies can understand god cause if you are too intelligent you would laugh at the concept of god?

You have to know that God most likely will not Distinguish between smart and stupid.. Smart people are sometimes too smart to believe. But Stupid believe ALWAYS believe. Smart people can believe, the difference is that we need a basis for our belief.

Exactly, I feel "god" gave me common sense so why can't question I question some things I feel aren't right, or don't always match my example of "loving. merciful" god.

If god is omnscient and omnipotent then that means that all events are already determined because god knows whatever is going to occur beforehand. If this is the case then it is impossible to have free will. Theologians have longed recognize this and have began to state that god is a learning god thereby nullifying the concept of omniscience.

Also, if god is omnipotent and omniscient then god is responsible for all things that occur for example evil.

Also if god is omnicient then god is rendeered useless because can god change its mind because of god's omniscience then god knows of all things that have and will occur. If god knows all future events then can god stop any future event, and if so, then would god know that god was going to stop god from said behavior.
Your only conclusion from the omniscience omnipotent argument is to assert the mystery of god.

I honestly think people throw around the words such as omniscience or omipotent without having any clue as to what they actually mean. It is just regurgitation of beliefs when they learned as a youth

Good post dude.
