Right-wing radio hosts bracing for Barack Obama victory
By DAVID HINCKLEY

With the presidential election days away, the talking heads of right-wing talk radio are mood-swinging between anxiety over a potential winner they despise and hope that the polls and pundits have got it wrong.

But the enthusiasm gap for John McCain afflicts some of the hosts as well.

RELATED CANDIDATES' 4th QUARTER AUDIBLE
Michael Savage, heard nightly on WOR (710 AM), announced Wednesday night that he was endorsing McCain, "even though he’s almost as bad as [GEORGE W.]Bush," because "we can’t afford to elect a radical Marxist like Barack Hussein Obama."

His sense of obligation won out, Savage proclaimed dramatically: "My endorsement could change the election and help save America."

Savage also has offered a few ideas that could expedite that process. "People on welfare shouldn’t be allowed to vote," he said. "They’ll only vote themselves a raise."

That’s Savage being Savage. But at the same hour on WABC (770 AM), host Mark Levin bemoaned the potential election of a "socialist" who would "take away our freedoms" and end America as we know it.

RELATED BARACK OBAMA GOES PRIMETIME
"Sometimes I feel like I’m talking to myself," said Levin, who has also ripped McCain, but endorsed him after the Sarah Palin selection. "We need to do something."

Earlier on WABC, Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) warned Sean Hannity ominously that a President Obama "would knock guys like you off the air."

Hannity himself has been repeatedly charged that we don’t know if Obama was really born in Hawaii and thus is really a citizen.

That hosts like Hannity give voice to some of the wilder Internet-fed rumors offends at least one local program director, Rennie Bishop of WWRL (1600 AM), the local outlet of the liberal Air America network.

"Talk radio now isn’t about issues, it’s about flame-throwing," says Bishop. "They’re just throwing anything out, no matter how pointless or baseless, to see if it will stick."

Talk radio – or at least the 90% that sees itself as a proud outpost of traditional American values on a hostile liberal mediascape – has seen the McCain campaign as catch-up from the start.

But veteran Republican cheerleaders like Hannity and Rush Limbaugh are not going to throw in the towel in the closing days. Each day they cherry-pick the polls, or parts of polls, that can support the argument that the race is close and McCain can pull it out.

And if not?

Paul Waldron of Media Matters, a progressive media watchdog group, says that while "there’s still a lot of ugliness toward Obama on talk radio, all the coded messages that he somehow isn’t ‘one of us,’ " some anger is a also being directed back at McCain.

"They need someone to blame," he says. "The liberal media. McCain himself. It’s almost like, if McCain loses, they want to have been out there with a pre-emptive explanation that exonerates the hosts by putting the responsibility somewhere else."

Whatever happens to McCain, conservative talk radio will still be there -- and if Obama wins, it could be stronger than ever, with its best villain since Bill Clinton was in the White House.

"If talk radio hosts were going to vote purely for their own self-interest instead of what they consider best for America, they’d all pull the lever for Obama," jokes Tim Graham, director of media analysis for the conservative-leaning Media Research Center.

What color font is that dude? Light grey? Why light gray on a white background?

Re: Right-wing radio hosts bracing for Barack Obama victory

Conservative talk-radio is a euphemism for racist talk-radio (white male supremacy)?

Re: Right-wing radio hosts bracing for Barack Obama victory

I think the problem is (1) Masterbaker appears to have misunderstood your questions (I think); looks like he may have thought you were asking what color (as in race), hence, his referral link to the thread on BGOL with a picture of a guy (although not related to this thread -- but to another thread he posted on this board).

<Whew>

at any rate, I share you sentiment, it (the gray on white background) is hard to read.

Re: Right-wing radio hosts bracing for Barack Obama victory

Conservative talk radio has been incendiary for quite some time. They lean heavy on the 1st amendment to push their (White, Christian, male power structure...I cannot thank Bill O'Reilly enough for stating this so plainly) agenda.

I'm glad it exists and has the following it has though because without it too many of us that don't fit into the agenda would become complacent.

That said, these dudes are gonna be on Barack 24/7 for any and everything, trying to rally republicans for the 2010 congressional races and the 2012 general election.

Rush Limbaugh brought a cheering crowd to its feet several times Saturday at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington as he called on fellow conservatives to take back the country.

"We conservatives have not done a good enough job of just laying out basically who we are, because we make the mistake of assuming that people know. What they know is largely incorrect, based on the More.. way we're portrayed in pop culture, in the drive-by media, by the Democrat party," the conservative talk show host told a mostly young crowd of energized supporters.

"We want every American to be the best he or she chooses to be. We recognize that we are all individuals. We love and revere our founding documents, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. We believe that the preamble of the Constitution contains an inarguable truth, that we are all endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, among them life, liberty, freedom -- and the pursuit of happiness," he said, pausing several times for enthusiastic applause.

Looking ahead to the 2012 election, Limbaugh said conservatives will have to choose the right candidate to take the country back.

Limbaugh's impassioned keynote speech, punctuated by chest-thumping, fist-pumping and chants of "USA" from the crowd, capped off three days of talk at CPAC focusing on rebuilding the Republican Party.

"He played to his crowd here," CNN political editor Mark Preston said. "And this crowd is now energized, something we haven't seen from Republicans, certainly not conservatives, since the November election."

Limbaugh used his self-described "first national address," which ran more than an hour longer than his allotted 20 minutes, to accuse President Obama of inspiring fear in Americans in order to push a liberal agenda of "big government."

"He wants people in fear, angst and crisis, fearing the worst each and every day, because that clears the decks for President Obama and his pals to come in with the answers, which are abject failures, historically shown and demonstrated. Doesn't matter. They'll have control of it when it's all over. And that's what they want," Limbaugh said.

"They see these inequalities, these inequities that capitalism produces. How do they try to fix it? Do they try to elevate those at the bottom? No, they try to tear down the people at the top."

Limbaugh praised Obama as one of the most gifted politicians he has seen, but said, "It just breaks my heart that he does not use these extraordinary talents and gifts to motivate and inspire the American people to be the best they can be. He's doing just the opposite."

Limbaugh also dismissed the notion of bipartisanship as a "false premise" given the diverging views of the Democratic and Republican Parties on a variety of issues, including the recent $787 stimulus package signed by Obama.

"Bipartisanship occurs only after one other result. And that is victory," he said.

"What [Democrats] mean is we check our core principles at the door, come in, let them run the show, and then agree with them," he said.

Limbaugh's rollicking speech came the day after Obama supporters put out a political ad implying that the conservative radio host has become the de facto head of the Republican Party in the absence of a clear GOP leader.

The ad argues that the Republican leadership in Congress is following Limbaugh's lead in opposing the Obama administration's stimulus package.

"So who are Republican leaders listening to?" the announcer asks, before the 30-second ad cuts abruptly to footage of Limbaugh saying, "I want him [Obama] to fail."

It was paid for by Americans United for Change and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union, two groups that supported Obama during the election and are advocating for his agenda.

Limbaugh doesn't speak for all Republicans or conservatives. Copies of the American Conservative magazine with the headline "How radio wrecks the right" were distributed to CPAC attendees, Preston said.

"There is some criticism of Rush Limbaugh. Some people think he is a reactionary," Preston said.

Limbaugh defended his remark about wanting Obama to fail, comparing it to his desire to see the Arizona Cardinals "fail" in this year's Super Bowl game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Video Watch Limbaugh explain failure remark »

"This notion that I want the president to fail, folks, this shows you a sign of the problem we've got," he said.

"What is so strange about being honest and saying, I want Barack Obama to fail if his mission is to restructure and reform this country so that capitalism and individual liberty are not its foundation? Why would I want that to succeed?" he said, bringing the crowd once again to its feet.

"Did the Democrats want the war in Iraq to fail? Well, they certainly did. And they not only wanted the war in Iraq to fail, they proclaimed it a failure."

Obama v. Limbaugh:
Poll finds it's no contest</font size></center>

McClatchy Newspapers
By Steven Thomma
Wednesday, March 11, 2009

WASHINGTON — The deepening recession is taking a slight toll on President Barack Obama's standing, but he's still twice as popular as archnemesis Rush Limbaugh, according to a new McClatchy-Ipsos poll.

The survey found that 65 percent of Americans approve of the way Obama is doing his job roughly 50 days into his presidency. That was down slightly from 69 percent a month ago.

At the same time, 29 percent disapprove of Obama's performance, a small increase from 26 percent a month ago. The poll of 1,070 adults taken last Thursday through Monday has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Still, the president's numbers remain high, roughly twice as high as his predecessor's in his final year in office and more than twice as high as those for Limbaugh, the right-wing radio talk-show host.

The poll found 30 percent of Americans with favorable opinions of Limbaugh, and 46 percent with unfavorable opinions. A solid 33 percent of all Americans have "very unfavorable" opinions of the talk show host.

The numbers help explain why Obama and his team relish a pitched battle with Limbaugh, a polarizing figure who's enormously popular with his fans but deeply unpopular with even more people.

The White House jumped on Limbaugh after he said that he wanted the president to fail in achieving his agenda. The White House was trying to force other Republicans either to stand with the controversial Limbaugh at the risk of alienating other Americans or to rebuke him, angering his listeners and him.

The most prominent victim was Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, who criticized Limbaugh, then apologized.

As partisan lines harden over Obama's agenda and presidency, Democrats and Republicans tend to see the economy and him through those familiar partisan lenses, and low support among Republicans pulls down the president's overall numbers.

Obama's approval rating, for example, is 89 percent among Democrats and 25 percent among Republicans. Among independents, his approval rating is 58 percent.

Another reason that the president lost a little ground could be an uptick in pessimism about the economy.

The survey found 57 percent saying the worst is yet to come on the economy, up from 54 percent a month ago. Just 3 percent said they thought the economy had "turned the corner" toward better times, down from 7 percent.

Those with more to lose are more pessimistic: Among those who make more than $50,000 a year, 66 percent think that things will continue to get worse. Among those who earn less than that, 50 percent think that things will get worse.

There was, however, a marginal increase in the number of people who think that the country is headed in the right direction, from 42 percent to 44 percent.

Partisan differences also could be influencing that, as 62 percent of Democrats think that the country is headed in the right direction now, while just 20 percent of Republicans think so.

METHODOLOGY — These are some of the findings of a McClatchy-Ipsos poll conducted last Thursday through Monday. For the survey, Ipsos interviewed a nationally representative, randomly selected sample of 1,070 people 18 and older across the United States. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate within 3.04 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult population in the U.S. been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including coverage error and measurement error. These data were weighted to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the U.S. population according to U.S. Census figures. Respondents had the option of being interviewed in English or Spanish.

Re: Obama vs. Limbaugh; No Contest

On first glance I say: Why are the Dems giving Limbaugh an avenue to expose his version of conservatism? America has dismissed that line of thinking with the last election. The issue that should concern Dems is: As the economy slips and layoffs increase, Limbaugh's voice will become louder. I don't listen to Rush, nor do I care for his kind but his 30% approval rating can only go up as seen in the following article. peace

If Obama keeps on signing all of these new stimulus bills, conservatives would probably get back the congress and senate....

Limbaugh expands his "FUCK YOU AMERICA" tour

Rush Limbaugh, Bloggers Tell Americans to Boycott GM

American job cuts are a necessary loss to avoid patronizing President Obama, they say

A bankrupt General Motors is moving well along the painful road to recovery, selling off Hummer and Saturn. Most are hoping it recovers to preserve the jobs of the hundreds of thousands directly or indirectly employs. However, others are wishing it would fail and are doing their best to try to guarantee this outcome.

Republican pundit and media personality Rush Limbaugh, along with fellow pundit Hugh Hewitt, has assembled a legion of red-state bloggers and are calling for a boycott of all GM vehicles according to Autoblog Green. They say that buying GM is tantamount to patronizing U.S. President Barack Obama.

Mr. Limbaugh held a special show to discuss the boycott. While many callers were not happy with it, one caller voiced his support, stating, "I just want to say, what you were just talking about there about not buying GM products because of Obama, it's exactly how I feel. I just... I have felt this way now for weeks. I have driven a Chevy Tahoe for several years. In fact, right now I've got about 150,000 miles on it. I won't even look at another one right now, and I just want to say thanks. At least somebody understands what's going on here."

The basis of Mr. Limbaugh's boycott apparently stems from the fact that the U.S. government will own 62 percent of a post-bankruptcy GM. Ironically, though, the trappings and suggestion for this were first set in place by Bush advisors, who pushed through the original bailout for the company, which it has effectively repaid with equity stake.

The boycott also fails to account for the fact that GM's ownership is now on the taxpayers' balance -- Republican and Democrat alike. It also fails to note that Canada also maintains a major stake in GM and that many other countries like Germany, are riding on its success and ability to move cleanly through bankruptcy.

However, Mr. Limbaugh may have more than one issue with GM. Mr. Limbaugh is an outspoken critic of hybrid vehicles and has accused them as "ruining" the industry, despite the fact that current models such as the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Honda Insight, and Toyota Prius are quite profitable. With GM pushing hardest for electric vehicles, with its Chevy Volt, it's likely this is another painful issue to Mr. Limbaugh.

For better or worse, though, he and his fellow commentators have declared war on GM. Only time will tell whether the boycott will actually have any sort of effect on sales, though.

Re: Limbaugh expands his "FUCK YOU AMERICA" tour

I was okay with the "I hope he fails" comment-- anything less would have been dishonesty and you always have people hoping for the agenda of a particular president to fail-- but he really is moving a lot closer to "I hope WE fail" with this...

It's not okay not to support the troops but its okay not to support unemployed workers? (Which, ironically, is a good method for creating more troops, aka cannon fodder...)

Trust me, I'm on the main forum enough to figure out where the word comes from. It's funny to me how the usage spread like wildfire this year. Not my cup of tea but a funny spin on the term.
