Continuing.......................

1575 - Portuguese merchants establish a permanent community at Luanda (northwest Angola), on the western coast of Africa, in a vain attempt to locate salt and silver mines. Instead they begin to build the trade in enslaved Africans. Angola supplies most of Brazil's enslaved Africans for the next 250 years.

1580s - Lundu warriors sweep up the east coast of Africa in an apparent challenge to Portuguese dominance.

1575 - 1591 - - During this time, more than 50,000 enslaved Africans are exported to Brazil from Angola.

Luanda (northwest Angola)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luanda

Luanda (formerly called Loanda) is the capital and largest city of Angola. Located on Angola's coast with the Atlantic Ocean, Luanda is both Angola's chief seaport and administrative center and has a population of approximately 4.8 million (2007)[1]. It is also the capital city of Luanda Province.

Portuguese rule

Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias de Novais founded Luanda in 1575 as "São Paulo de Loanda", with a hundred families of settlers and four hundred soldiers.

In 1618 the Portuguese built the fortress called Fortaleza São Pedro da Barra, and in 1634 they built another fortress: Fortaleza de São Miguel.

Luanda was Portuguese Angola's administrative centre from 1627, with one exception: the Dutch ruled Luanda from 1640 to 1648 as Fort Aardenburgh. The city served as the centre of a large slave trade to Brazil from c.1550 to 1836.

The slave trade was conducted mostly with the Portuguese colony of Brazil; Brazilian ships were the most numerous in the ports of Luanda and Benguela.

By this time, Angola, a Portuguese colony, was in fact like a colony of Brazil, paradoxically another Portuguese colony.

A strong degree of Brazilian influence was noted in Luanda until the Independence of Brazil in 1822. In the 19th century, still under Portuguese rule, Luanda experienced a major economic revolution. The slave trade was abolished in 1836, and in 1844 Angola's ports were opened to foreign shipping.

By 1850, Luanda was one of the greatest and most developed Portuguese cities in the vast Portuguese Empire outside Mainland Portugal, full of trading companies, exporting (together with Benguela) palm and peanut oil, wax, copal, timber, ivory, cotton, coffee, and cocoa, among many other products. Maize, tobacco, dried meat and cassava flour also began to be produced locally.

The Angolan bourgeoisie was born by this time. In 1889 Governor Brito Capelo opened the gates of an aqueduct which supplied the city with water, a formerly scarce resource, laying the foundation for major growth. Like most of Portuguese Angola, the cosmopolitan[3] city of Luanda was not affected by the Portuguese Colonial War (1961-1974); economic growth and development in the entire region reached record highs during this period. In 1972 a report called Luanda the "Paris of Africa".

Independence from Portugal

By the time of Angolan independence in 1975, Luanda was a modern city and the majority of the city's population was of Portuguese origin. After the Carnation Revolution in April 1974, with the advent of independence and the start of the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002), most of the Portuguese left as refugees, principally for Portugal, with many travelling overland to South Africa.

There was an immediate crisis, because the local African population lacked the skills and knowledge needed to run the city and maintain its infrastructure.

The large numbers of skilled technicians among the force of Cuban soldiers sent in to support the MPLA government in the Angolan Civil War were able to make a valuable contribution to restoring and maintaining basic services in the city.

However, slums called musseques stretched for miles beyond Luanda's former city limits, as a result of the decades-long civil war, and because of the rise of deep social inequalities due to large-scale migration of civil war refugees from other Angolan regions.

For decades, Luanda's facilities were not adequately expanded to handle this massive increase in the city's population. After 2002, with the end of the civil war and high economic growth rates fuelled by the wealth provided by the increasing oil and diamond production, major reconstruction started.

These Lundu (Zimba) warriors fought the Portuguese for 40 years up to 1622

LOL at summa you so-called 'brothers' arguing about how pleasant slavery was in Africa.

"You see, my brother, our fellow Africans only allowed a slave to work for 7 years..."

GTFOH with your pseudo-Black ass! Slavery is slavery! Acting like slavery in Africa is like getting an HB1 work visa or some shit. And the fact that legal slavery still exists in Africa looooooooooooooooooooong after it's been abolished and/or virtually wiped out everywhere else on planet Earth shows how hypocritical you are. You don't help your people when you make excuse after excuse after excuse after excuse for their fuckery.

If we Black people held ourselves to the same standards we demand of everyone else, we'd be unstoppable. The whole concept behind this whole thread is bullshit.

You expect white people to jump when one of them is just rude to a Black person(ie "Barack the magic negro"), but you can't bring yourself to point out the truth that some of our ancestors sold each other into slavery? :smh:

:hmm:

yall niggas better be happy you here than over there...

thank God for them.....

shit niggas act like they wanna be fighting lions and shit...

Are you serious?

Because if you are you're a dumbass.

If your not, then

BTW, I saw a doc on PBS a few years ago talking about African ancestry and a sister and her husband went to the motherland. A Black African tour guide gave them a tour of various slave posts and mentioned that Africans enslaved each other long before the Euros got into the act. It took the wind outta her sails to hear that, but it was the truth.

Niggas acting like the Pyramids were built by volunteers...

Africans from different tribes did sunjugate each other long before white slavery arose. The term African is used loosely in this thread and does not give proper respect to the tribal lines drawn throughout Africa.

In Ghana, i'm told, the slave trade is rarely taught in schools anymore due to the deep wounds of the tribal conflicts that facilitated the slave trade. For them, it is not merely an African vs. European discussion. The simple fact is, Europeans (in the west) and Arabs (in the East) did exploit tribal conflicts to trade trinkets and food for humans. Africans tribes facilitated and actively participated in this trade.

That being said, there were raids on slave trading posts once the full scale of the trade or, in some cases, a tribal elder or king was taken.

This is my perspective. I am an African-American who lived in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire the past two years and worked closely with West Africans in my day-to-day job. This perspective is gleaned from my own study, conversations with my colleagues and friends about the slave trade and from my visits to slave trading posts on Goree Island, Senegal; Cape Coast and Elmina, Ghana; and Zanzibar.

1. Slavery is not slavery. A simple google search will will demonstrate. this is too simple to waste time on e.g.

FAST FACTS

  • Slavery today is defined as forced labor without pay under threat of violence.
  • 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked internationally every year. Approximately 80% of them are women and children.
  • Slavery was officially abolished worldwide at the 1927 Slavery Convention, yet it continues to thrive thanks to the complicity of some governments and the ignorance of much of the world.
  • In the 2000 Refugee Report, “Trafficking in Women and Children: A Contemporary Manifestation of Slavery,” former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright calls human trafficking “the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world.”
  • Slavery is an extremely profitable, international industry. Experts estimate trafficking in the US yields $9 billion every year. Around the world, trafficking in women for commercial sex purposes nets $6 billion per year. The trade of human flesh is so lucrative that authorities complain that even as they close in on one smuggling ring in the US, another one pops up.
  • The four most common types of slavery are: chattel slavery, debt bondage, forced labor, and sexual slavery.
CHATTEL SLAVERY is closest to the slavery that prevailed in early American history. Chattel slaves are considered their masters’ property — exchanged for things like trucks or money and expected to perform labor and sexual favors. Once of age, their children are expected to do the same. Chattel slavery is typically racially-based; in the North African country of Mauritania, for example, black Africans serve the lighter-skinned Arab-Berber communities. Though slavery was legally abolished there in 1980, today 90,000 slaves continue to serve the Muslim Berber ruling class. Similarly, in the African country of Sudan, Arab northerners are known to raid the villages in the South — killing all the men and taking the women and children to be auctioned off and sold into slavery.

DEBT BONDAGE, or bonded labor, is the most widely practiced form of slavery around the world. In Southeast Asia, where it is most prevalent, debt bondage claims an estimated 15 to 20 million victims. The staggering poverty there forces many parents to offer themselves or their own children as collateral against a loan. Though they are promised they will work only until their debt is paid off, the reality is much grimmer. Thanks to inflated interest rates and fresh debts incurred while being fed and housed, the debt becomes impossible to pay off. As a result, it is often inherited by the bonded laborer’s children, perpetuating a vicious cycle that can claim several generations.

SEX SLAVERY finds women and children forced into prostitution. Many are lured by false offers of a good job and then beaten and forced to work in brothels. In Southeast Asia, however, it is not uncommon to find women coerced by their own husbands, fathers, and brothers to earn money for the men in the family to pay back local money lenders. In other cases, victims pay tens of thousands of dollars to get to another country and are then forced into prostitution in pay off their own debts. In still others, women or girls are plainly kidnapped from their home countries. The sex slavery trade thrives in Central and Eastern Europe and in North America. An estimated two million women and children are sold into sex slavery around the world every year.

FORCED LABOR often results when individuals are lured by the promise of a good job but instead find themselves subjected to slaving conditions — working without payment and enduring physical abuse, often in harsh and hazardous conditions. Victims include domestic workers, construction workers, and even human mine detectors. Migrant workers are particularly vulnerable, as their constant changes of location make the organized crime rings that traffic them difficult to bust.

Maybe The African Nations involved should make it a TOP PRIORITY to launch a media campaign to clarify "in detail" their link to slavery in America.. If the PERCEIVED offender has not made an irrefutable effort to apologize to the wronged, how can you expect the victim to not harbor some malcontent.

And maybe it wouldn't hurt if these same nations UNANIMOUSLY apologized..

IMO!

:lol::lol::lol:

Common sense knowledge: Africans kill and try to cause genocide to other Afican cultures today (in the 2000's) = African greed today forces the elite to keep the humanitarian food for themselves while others starve to death = Hotel Rwanda = If an African culture tries to totally eliminate another African culture by killing them off what makes you think they give 2 shits about profiting off of the sale of them to ANYONE. Let alone white people = 500 years ago in a LESS CIVILIZED world, why would it have been any better then and not now?

Furthermore, what's your excuse for Africans today since we're such an ABOVE ALL/RIGHTEOUS people? What literature you have that negates that genocide attempts didn't happen as recently as the 1990's. Also, isn't genocide MUCH worse than slavery? At least slaves had a chance. ?

Keep reading your books and wiki pages.
Staying ignorant.

Africa is made up of many countries and within that are many tribes.

Not all tribes get along. Just cause they ALL black dont mean they love each other... and you know what... they dont HAVE to.

Not all black people love each other just like not all white people love each other.

That is a fact. Get over it.

Your "ancestors" aint sell you into slavery. A black African helped sell your "ancestors" into slavery peep the distinction.

FOR WHAT? I really gives .(this) much about what you're trying to sell me. What exactly am I suppose to read up on?

What really gets me pissed off though is the dumb ass 5th grade education black folk that feed into the NOI rhetoric that "we were all African Kings & Queens with streets lined in gold, etc."

Does that really make sense if you think about it?
That's similar to the bible trying to convince me that Jesus/God and a spirit are all the same. Even though, Jesus prays to God even asking him of favors.

You just not going to tell me to read something and to blindly accept it as truth.

Start thinking instead of reading.

wow, i am sitting back in amazement at a lot of the ignorance, lack of knowledge, and opinions based on a high school history class level. also, the connection between the justifications of slavery in its mid atlantic form, and the remnants and effects in modern society including africa, the caribbean, america and europe, is where we need to advance this conversation. i think this will help those just talking outta their ass understand the self defeating aspects of their logic. take a second to think about it, about some of the explanations and reasonings to explain slavery in america. religion, savage africa, it was "best" for them, and we can keep going......
