imhotep can i just take the ccnp or ccna exam or do i have to get the a+ cert first? thank you in advance for your assistance
The A+ demonstrates competency as a
computer technician, and in not vendor specific. The Cisco CCNP ($$)or CCNA ($$$) (are vendor specific) certification validates your ability to install, configure, operate, and troubleshoot medium-size routed and switches ie
networks.
Summary anyone can get and A+. So it not taken seriously (GED of the IT world). The
CCNA and
CCNP are harder for the lazy to get, but more profitable since you have to apply effort. The
"Maybach" of Cisco certification in the
"Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert" . IT tech say you can write your own paycheck once you have this, since it so rare. People whose skill set is different, and in high demand than the masses can demand more, since their value to a company will increase. So gardens are a dime a dozen, but a man that can troubleshoot a network problem can demand six figures.
You state early that your choices was
Security+($)and
Network+. Nice ones to have, and will give you a boarder understanding of Networking!
Ultimately, find something you really, really like doing. No amount a money will make you do a job you hate well. And remember to network with other IT people. Some good jobs are never post online, and it help to work with people you like.
Finally look into IT jobs in
insurance, health care and
Uncle Sam "Defense". I have yet to hear of lay offs.
