No software? No problem.

Despite early predictions that 2008 would be the year Sony regained momentum in the bitter video game console wars, it turned out to be false hope. Industry leader Nintendo stayed ahead of the pack all year, thoroughly dominating both the home console and handheld hardware markets with their Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS systems, respectively.

According to NPD Group, Nintendo flat-out owned the all-important month of November by selling over 2 million Wiis, better than twice as much as the next closest competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360 (836,000). And at over 1.5 million DS systems sold, Nintendo tripled the output of Sony's PSP (421,000). While those numbers weren't nearly that high through most of 2008, the general order -- Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony -- held strong throughout.

Wii Ascendant
But this was hardly a banner year for Nintendo in terms of software. The biggest games -- Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and of course Wii Fit -- came relatively early in the year, and their biggest holiday release, Wii Music, has been labeled something of a dud. Miffed that the company was focusing too heavily on catering to its relatively new mass-market audience, the usually loyal Nintendo fans complained about a lack of core games. Meanwhile, Microsoft and Sony enjoyed a wealth of blockbuster games all year long, including top-sellers Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3. So how did Nintendo compete, much less lead the way?

By finding a new niche, of course. While gamers lament the deluge of cheaply made games (dubbed "shovelware") aimed at capitalizing on the Wii's mainstream popularity, many of those titles speak to their broad audience and support the company's new directive. Nintendo knows on which side its bread is currently being buttered, and while Microsoft and Sony battle for the hearts and minds of the core gamers, Nintendo is content getting their moms to play, too. And their moms often have a lot more money.

Microsoft, on the other hand, found itself in second place by keeping its eyes on the prize: core gamers willing to shell out for great downloadable content. The recently released "New Xbox Experience" system update has nearly tripled sales over Xbox Live Arcade, while huge releases like Gears of War 2 and Fable II cemented their status as the go-to console for most gamers.

New Xbox Experience
As the newest kid on the block, Microsoft is less concerned with catching Nintendo than they are with kicking Sony's butt, which is pretty much exactly what they're doing. Take, for instance, the November NPD numbers for Activision's best-selling first-person shooter, Call of Duty: World at War. The 360 version of the game sold an impressive 1.4 million copies -- over twice that of the PS3 version (597,000). It's hard to play catch up when you're getting beaten that badly.

As for Sony, well, they just can't catch a break. The company scored a major coup when Blu-ray officially trounced HD-DVD in the hi-def format war, but few believe the technology will catch on with consumers. Strong sales of big-time exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 were promising, but the troubled launch of their 'Home' network coupled with relatively weak holiday sales (only Resistance 2 cracked the Top 10 list in November, all the way back at number 9) cramped their style. The once-promising PSP is getting whomped by both the DS and Apple's surging iPhone. Did a witch cast a spell on these guys or what?

Hopefully next year will bode better for the one-time king of the consoles, but for now, they'll have to get used to the view from the back of the pack.

Honestly I'm about 2 seconds from turning my PlayStation 3 from a gaming console to a media hub (or what ever you call it)....Basically putting a large hard drive on it and moving all of my (hollywood) movies on it and leaving the gaming shit alone. I haven't spent money on a new game since June (MGS4) and I mostly get used games for less than $10 and I kinda feel like I'm growing out of games.

It was Sony's own fault, high ass price combined with lack of games, means shitty sales.:smh: Hats off to Nintendo (even though I fucking hate their games) for coming with a winning formula.

I'm not one to call it the end for Sony just yet even though I'm a MS fanboy. The fact that they have blluray could end up meaning soomething later. What do you think??

Sonys gonna take a massive L on the PS3. I love my 3, but if it wasnt for my Christmas bonus last year, I wouldnt have one. A better system doesnt mean its gonna catch on. I almost wish the PS3 would fail to make Sony finally see that they need to come down on their fuckin prices. Sony is a good brand, but when I can get a better Panasonic tv cheaper why would I go with a Sony??? Too much comp to be doing the same dumbshit theyve been doing for almost 2 decades now. Blueray is better, but why in the hell would I pay 30 for a fuckin movie when I can buy the DVD for 1/3 or the price??? Blueray doesnt look 2/3s better than a DVD, so why make it cost that much more???

co-sign....
that might also be a reason why I'm ready to retire my controller.

If they drop the price I may still pick one up. I'm a Metal Gear Solid nut. However I'm waiting to see if it makes to Xbox 360. If that happens then I'll pick up an Xbox, but only the one with the new Jasper chipset.:smh: I'll be pissed if I am a victim of the RROD.

MGS4 was my last PS3 game too. Dont let PS3's lackluster game selection turn you off to gaming tho. Try out the Wii, or a 360.

I love Blu-Ray, and I think its worth it. It the only reason I keep the PS3 around. PS3 is a great media hub, but as far as gaming its not up to par.

There are a few good titles on PS3, but I find myself wishing they would come out on 360.

In my opinion, as for me Sony was thinking too deep with Blue ray. I may be the minority but I am perfectly satisfied with regular dvd, but I can't say that for TV......... I upgraded. They tried to kill two birds (dvd and gaming) with one stone and it failed. Stick to the roots (gaming), then expand.

At the start of the year the Wii was way out in front in terms of an installed base with 20 million machines in homes. By comparison the Xbox 360 was in 15.5 million homes and the PS3 9 million.

Analysts Screen Digest predicts that Nintendo will more than double its installed base of the Wii by the end of this year to 42 million, amplifying its lead over Sony and Microsoft.

The picture in 2008 was mixed for Sony and Microsoft, he said.
"The 360 and PS3 have performed fairly similarly, with just a few hundred thousand units difference over the year between them."
Screen Digest predicts that the PS3 will have an installed base of 19 million by the end of 2008, while the 360 will have 24 million.

"When we looked at the 360 at the beginning of the year we didn't think it was going to do as well as it has done."
An aggressive price cut and marketing campaign across Europe has seen the 360 do well in traditional PlayStation heartlands around the continent.

By contrast, the lack of a price cut for the PS3 combined with difficult economic circumstances for many consumers has seen the console fail to ignite as some predictions foretold.
He added: "We always felt that 2008 was the year that PS3 kicked off - but we think that will now be 2009."

Seeing as how the "difficult economic circumstances" are only supposed to continue and/or worsen I don't understand how he thinks 2009 will be the year for Sony unless they reveal some really aggressive price cuts.

"We always felt that 2008 was the year that PS3 kicked off - but we think that will now be 2009."

Where the hell do they get these crackhead analyst from (at least it's not Michael Pachter this time). I could've sworn we were told that 2007 was the year of the PS3, then we were told 2008 was the year of the PS3 and now it's 2009? LOL, I guess people keep counting Microsoft out. Sony may have screwed there Playstation brand up, because all it's now known for is an inexpensive Blu-ray player that puts games at the back burner. No year will be the PS3's until they release a bevy of actual GOOD games, and reduce that price below the $300 mark. It's simple, people have answered with their wallets and the sales of the Wii and 360 prove that point. They need me to manage Sony's Playstation division, then maybe they'd get some results that put them back "in-the-game!

I Like The Ps3 For The Blu-ray Experience 1080 P Greatness And The Gaming.the Ps3 Is A Great Media Machine. I Like The 360 For The Gaming.

I still think BluRay is gonna flop or atleast come no where close to the popularity of DVDs. By the time BluRay starts gathering steam, downloading and streaming HD content to your TV or a set top box will be the norm. Shit, they already have terabyte storage and internet speed keeps increasing.
That's the reason I've not purchased a bluray player or a ps3.

I didn't want to spend the 400-500 for a PS3 and the same for and X-Box 360. I copped a Wii for my kids and do find myself interested in it. The Call of Duty Worl at War is great. Wii Boxing is fun and so is the Bowling. I also find myself using it to warm up before I go lift weights. So in that I think that the Wii is the best out of all the systems. But now that X-Box 360 has dropped to like 150, I may buy one or just wait til the wife comes home with one for me.

...not to mention not making the newer PS3 models backwards compatible with PS2 games...I bought a used early-model PS3 for that reason...

It's not just the price of the system that fucks up the PS3. It's the fact that a majority of their games are not even in 1080. So all the talk about "It's gonna look better" is bullshit unless you have a television specifically catering to the system capability. The 360 looks good on just about anything cause all the games cover most video HD settings.

yeah HD downloads it's the future with internet providers putting caps on the connection
it IS the future... not our near future :hmm:

Man I was one of those people that was saying that the wii and 360 was going to fail. WII cause of the kiddie games bullshit and 360 cause of poor engineering(RED RING of DEATH)and 50 other problems. But the wii is on top people still buying 360's and sony high ass systemis killing them. Only ill get a 360 is if i get one for free wouldnt mind gettin a wii. But the wii only got like 4 games tops that i would play.

Damn !!!!!!!!!!!!! I was planning on getting a PS3. But after reading what you guys have posted I might have to lean towards the 360.

I don't understand how the PS3, that comes equiped with a high ticket item like a bluray player can be suffering so much and the Wii that lacks real software continues to give MS and Sony fits.

Why? most people are saying they just use the PS 3 as a blu-ray player, so why not just buy a blu ray player.

They both have exclusive games worth playing imo...some people don't wanna spend $$$ on both which I can dig...

$$$$ isn't the problem because I can bye 1 new and 1 used but I have other things I need to do with my money besides buying a PS3 &360

:smh:Ken Kutaragi had this to say about Sony's goal for the PS3: "for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else." In other words: Get a job! Get two jobs, ya lazy bums! Seriously though, is that their marketing plan?
