Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are planning to collaborate on a remake of Park Chan-wook's Oldboy, according to Variety. The pair, who have been looking for a project to work on together for some time, are said to be in early discussions about reworking the acclaimed Korean thriller, which centres on a man who is kidnapped and held in a dirty cell for 15 years without explanation.

Smith would play the imprisoned man - Choi Min-sik in the 2003 original - who is freed just as he is about to put an escape plan into practice. He is given money, clothes and a mobile phone and sets out to discover who stole his life from him in order to take revenge.

A direct remake would seem to be particularly dark territory for both Spielberg and Smith, as the original contains a number of family-unfriendly themes and sequences, such as the famous live octopus sushi scene. Spielberg is currently said to be searching for a writer.

The original Oldboy was a huge favourite of Quentin Tarantino, who tried to persuade his fellow Cannes jurists to award it the Palme d'Or in 2004. In the end they plumped for the safer territory of Fahrenheit 9/11. It remains to be seen whether Smith and Spielberg will end up making a similar decision.

WTF?? Don't get me wrong, I like Will Smith but Oldboy was a serious noir type of film, not something Will is known to explore.

I guess WS is trying to expand his acting portfolio. :dunno:

He better be ready for it. Plus Spielberg is probably not the best choice as a director for that type of film - I would have gone with Darren Aronofsky or David Fincher.

I'd love to see will smith in this type of film. I actually would rather him play the guy who imprisoned him. I think that would be a good stretch and turn for will. I'm sure it will be crap though compared to the original. Shit is too real for american audiences they would cut and change a bunch of shit which would make it extra watered down. I wish they would make it grimy like the korean one but they would never do that. Great great movie though if you haven't seen it you should check it out

i can see that to

i can see that to

yea to me he fits that role more it's a supporting role though, will always gotta be the star. If I were casting it I would put don cheadle as oh dae su. I think he could bring depth , feeling, venerability and simmering anger that the lead role requires.

Oh hell no!!!! Whoever suggested Cheadle for this role was on point. There's a certain level of reserve that's needed for the role and Will Smith is all about charisma and being a little more over the top.

Personally I just wish that Hollywood would stop fucking with these excellent foreign films that 9 times out of 10 they end up bastardizing.

That may be true, but what your forgetting is the whole point of why the film is being made, to give credit to how good the first film was. To mainstream it to the millions of americans who have never heard of it, and never will. But now might get around to checking out the original because of the remake, thats what alot of people fail to understand. If it ends up being a terrible movie, that will only make the original appear even better. Its a win-win situation.

i don't agree with that. Folks already know the story so they don't go out and check for the original thus cheating themselves. They really need to keep the story grimy though or else the third act means nothing. That shit was seriously the most fucked up revenge of all time. it's worse than cartman making scott tenorman eat his parents.

Here's the thing, they will have to change several of the key elements/scenes of the film in order to make it watchable for american audiences. Really, how many big budget movies that come out in america have storylines that include implied incest, brutal fight scenes, and the main character/hero mutilating himself out of shame? Then take all of that and twist it up into a thoughtful thriller with a dash of very dark humor. American audiences aren't ready for that en masse.

The remake of Infernal Affairs (The Departed) has been the only good remake of a korean movie thus far, and even that had a few changes. If anything they should leave OldBoy alone, remake Battle Royale, Election, or Ichi the Killer (something where the plot isn't so completely mind fucking) and keep it moving.

Also, no way in hell can I see Will playing Oh Dae Su. Nothing against Will, but that character seems to require way more range than he has shown thus far.

THAT SHIT WAS NOT IMPLIED...IT WAS WHAT IT WAS

I didn't go apeshit over the Infernal Affairs remake like many did (enjoyed it, but pales in comparison to the original to the degree that I wouldn't watch it again since I own the original), nor do I have a good feeling about this.

I think Smith is a great actor (and Spielberg I generally enjoy as a director), but it is becoming too predictable with these remakes. Honestly, why remake these great films that are a few years old at most? It's not like your average American movie-goer is going to become curious about the original one (for which they'd have to watch with subtitles) after enjoying the American remake. They'll continue sleeping on it like they did when it was first mentioned in whatever media magazine they crack opened (if they read much to begin with).

WAY too many South Korean cultural aspects of Oldboy that would make little sense translating exactly for the American remake (thus, eliminating the point of this project from the start).

How about just making an original (I know nothing is original anymore, but you get my point) and pairing Smith with Spielberg for that?

I remember a couple months ago watching this very tight new Korean filmed called "The Chaser" with my wife and at the end of it saying, "This was great! I bet even though this film came out this year, already it is in the works for an American remake." Surely enough, I was right.

I wish, in the event of having no "new" ideas, American directors would try to remake BAD foreign films, not films that are loved by most thinking people (dumb people shouldn't count).

It would be a great challenge for a talented director to take it as, "I'm trying to make something bad and turn it good." I think THAT type of "out of the box" thinking would make more interesting remakes in the long run. Unfortunately, too many are so hard-pressed to get their hands on perfect films that don't need any tweeking, tampering, "Americanizing," etc.

loved the joint......

but is Will gonna remake this part devouring the live octopus???

Then they should remake Bloody Ties. It wasn't bad per se, but not that good either..fairly average and would be an easy target for any director to add their own spin to it.

Just watched it. I'm still like :eek: There is no way THAT film is getting remade for American audiences. It may have the same title and characters, but it will be a shell of THAT movie i've just finished watching. Wow....fucking wow.:smh:

Edit: Someone please suggest another movie like it. I get the feeling that I'm missing out on some great Korean cinema.

The whole reason why the film is being made is to make money. All Hollywood is doing is taking a $5000 car, slapping some bullshit ass paint on it, and trying to flip it for $10000.

And don't get me wrong I like Will Smith, but I think something like this might be out of his skill set. Really haven't been feeling him on the last couple of movies he made so I don't know, maybe he'll knock it out the water.

It is part of the Vengence triology so make sure to watch the other 2 movies. The stories have nothing to do with each other, but some of the actors/actresses appear in each one. If you can, make sure to at least watch Sympathy for Mr. Vengence.

OldBoy
Sympathy For Mr. Vengence
Lady Vengence

I would also suggest:
Infernal Affairs (at least part 1 of the trilogy)
Triad Election (slow and fairly straight forward, but good)
Audition
2LDK

And if you have a girl and she is like mine, 3 Iron (though I fell asleep through half of it)
