Okay, who's gonna get Vanity's role?

It's another heavy role for Samuel L. Jackson.

Having most recently played a dirty cop in "Lakeview Terrace," Jackson is set to star as a bad guy again in Columbia Pictures' remake of Berry Gordy's 1985 cult classic "The Last Dragon."

Jackson will play Sho'nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, a role played in the original by the late Julius Carry, whose spiel included asking ego-driven questions like "Am I the baddest mofo lowdown around this town?" Each time his gang of thugs answered, "Sho 'nuff!"

Davis Entertainment's John Davis and Gordy's son Kerry Gordy are producing.

Penning the screenplay as well as producing is Dallas Jackson, who heads up the urban family label DJ Classicz with Davis. Wu-Tang Clan's RZA is co-producing.

The updated plot will be along the same lines of the original, centering on young martial arts student Leroy Green in his quest through the streets of New York to achieve the highest level of martial arts accomplishment, known as the Last Dragon. Those who achieve the high ranking possess the Glow, making them the greatest fighter alive.

The project, announced by Columbia presidents Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, will take a new look at "Last Dragon" coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Motown next year.

"We're thrilled to be working with Kerry Gordy as he continues his father's legacy, and we're confident that he along with John and Dallas are the perfect team to develop the project," Belgrad said. "They will capture everything that people love about the original while also bringing a fresh edge to the remake."

The original, which also starred one-namers Taimak and then-Prince protege Vanity, was released in March 1985 by TriStar Pictures and received lukewarm reviews by critics like Roger Ebert, who gave it 2 1/2 stars and said it was a "great near-miss."

Despite the reviews, "Last Dragon" did well at the boxoffice, grossing nearly $26 million. It soon became a cult classic for scenes like Bruce Lee follower Green remaining so loyal to the martial arts star that he eats his popcorn in a movie theater with chopsticks.

"I'm a huge fan of the original and look forward to bringing Sho'Nuff into the 21st century," Jackson said.

Jackson, repped by ICM and Anonymous Content, made a surprise cameo in the summer blockbuster "Iron Man" and the sci-fi action film "Jumper." He also stars with the late Bernie Mac in "Soul Men," which opens Christmas Day, and Frank Miller's upcoming "The Spirit."

Shyt I was just watching this the other day and noticed how corny it seems now. But when I was a kid this movie was gold!!!!

they remake classics all the time ...but this one they should leave alone....:smh:
I know, i just hate when they remake a movie for the sake of remaking it. Not saying the Last Dragon is on some Michael Corleone shit, but is Hollywood going to remake the Godfather in a few years too? I would rather they make this into a sequel instead, Taimak is still in good shape, have him run his own Dojo in Harlem or something. :smh:There is a reason they are called classics, you can watch them anytime and they never grow old.

Another thing too, when is this film going to be set, in the 1980's or present. The thing about the original movie is that it was done in a time when hip Hop music was still a new and (forgive the pun) Fresh idea. The marriage of Hip Hop and Martial Arts at the time was perfect. I just don't see how they could make this film and set it in todays world.

El Debarge probably pissed. His ass going to jail, and they remaking this. He could've been singing his classic!!!!

Okay, who's gonna get Vanity's role?

They could bring her back, she could use the work:

I kind of hear you, but its not like the original disappears.
I wann see what they'll do with it.

i dont think they should mess with this it should stay a classic if anything they should just re release it in theatres or dvd remastered or something :dunno: just my two cents

michael jai white is an obvious nod because of his skill..
but the whole draw of leroy was that he seemed real humble and almost weak through most of the movie.
michael jai doesnt seem like he could sell that part of the role

You know how many Channels show THE COSBY SHOW and how many TIMES a day it comes on?

SHE DON'T NEED THE WORK.

"DAAANK QUE" - Little Rudy's only line from The Last Dragon.

yo samuel l. and michael jai white are to damn old looking for this movie. taimax looked young in the flick. sho nuff wasn't that much older than leroy. leroy is supposed to be a virgin. these two actors are grown ass men. stop with that big name actor shit.

Samuel L. Jackson is older than and LOOKS older than the late Julius Carry now. Sam looks like Julius Carry 23 years older than when the original movie was made. I would think somebody like a Busta Rhymes would make more sense if they are just remaking the original flick, but I ain't too sure Busta could act his way through even a "Sho Nuff" role.

Michael Jai White would REALLY be convincing as 18-21 year old, nerdy, humble little kung-fu dork:rolleyes:

I know dude deserves more parts than he gets, but he is designed for the Wesley Snipes niche (which is open, by the way), not the Taimak niche.

I have no fucking idea who would play Bruce Leroy, but don't be pissed when it ends up being somebody like Chris Brown.

Busta Rhymes should play shonuff!!!!!

Beyonce can play Vanity

Nick Cannon can play Bruce Leroy

AIN'T NOBODY TRYIN' TO SEE NO DAMN NICK CANNON AS NO DAMN BRUCE LEROY!!!!! Only way I'd watch that nigga is if they changed the storyline and had Sho Nuff snap Leroy's neck at the end.
:roflmao3::roflmao3::roflmao3::roflmao3::roflmao3::roflmao3::roflmao3::roflmao3:

co-sign niggas dont know how tv works , she's breaded for life and im sure half the shit she dont even remember cause she was so young, must be fun. oh yea and they should leave the last dragon alone.

Upon further reflection, this movie shouldn't be made at all and it is gonna be a fuckin' DISASTER. Sam is too fuckin' old, so they gonna have to break out the Chuck Norris as Walker Texas Ranger Stunt Leg (they should have chosen Busta, for Sho Nuffs speaking parts, it ain't like Busta gotta play Othello or some shit). I have no fuckin' idea who would play Bruce Leroy, but I got a feeling it's gonna be fucked up (Soulja Boy comes to mind). There ain't a dude under 25 in Hollywood or the music scene I can think of that ain't moist as pound cake, so the Bruce Leroy part is FUCKED.

I dunno maybe this nigga can play Bruce Leroy (shit, it's better than Nick Cannon)...

Only problem with this dude (and 90% of the dudes who could play Bruce Leroy), is that I'd want a rewrite done where Sho Nuff kills them. This cat right here, I'd like to see him scalped and disemboweled, with Nick Cannon, a simple neck snap would do, with Chris Brown, I think I'd like to see his heart get snatched out or see Sho Nuff reenact that famous Bruce Lee scene where he jumps in dude's chest cavity. Any way it goes, if Sho Nuff ain't killing Bruce, I ain't trying to watch.

You seem really jealous of all these young, successful black men. Old bitter fool. Sad.
