The Black Turnout Surge, Already In Progress

According to Michael McDonald's terrific website, there are three states in which early voting has already exceeded its totals from 2004. These are Georgia, where early voting is already at 180 percent of its 2004 total, Louisiana (169 percent), and North Carolina (129 percent).

Hmm ... can anybody think of something that those three states have in common?

The African-American population share is the key determinant of early voting behavior. In states where there are a lot of black voters, early voting is way, way up. In states with fewer African-Americans, the rates of early voting are relatively normal.

This works at the county level too. In Cuyahoga County, Ohio (Cleveland), which about 30 percent black, twice as many people have already voted early as in all of 2004. In Franklin County (Columbus), which is about 18 percent black and also has tons of students, early voting is already about 3x its 2004 total.

So when McCain's pollster talks about Obama's black vote being "locked in", he is at best getting the story half-right. It's true that there aren't very many African-Americans who are reporting themselves as undecided. But any polling based on 2004 assumptions about what black turnout will look like is probably going to miss the mark significantly.

Frankly, I do think that McCain is the favorite to win a majority of undecideds (but a majority means like 55-60%, not some ridiculous fraction like 70%).

But I also think that the polls are probably undercounting Obama's decided vote, particularly among African-Americans, and young persons with cellphones.

Which is why eewwll I said (others did too) that Hillary messed up by ignoring the black vote when it's voting as a block. She went after the racist, redneck vote and decided not to work for our vote. She did well, but she might be the nominee today with a little effort to come get this vote.

Good post bruh.

man, Hillary didn't get it, hell, the entire country didn't get it.

we are the sleeping giant that decided to wake up and yawn.

think of what we could do if we decided to actually get out of bed.

Man in Cobb county the lines are ridiculous!!! I coach near one of the voting locations and the lines are wrapped around the damn building all day!! I am proud to say though that the lines are filled with black folks. When I voted last wednesday it was nothing but black people in the line and it was a site to see man!:D

i voted on october 16th.
they said Illinois set records also.
up 20% ( it could be less) :dunno:
but bottom line is....the lines are long as hell in most of the hoods.
when i voted...i saw mostly older black folks.
me and this other guy & female were the only ones young there.

me and this older lady were talking to about why younger black folks in the hood dont like to vote...and she asked me what made me want to come out and vote. i told her im basically just voting to pay my respects....thats about it. i told her after the 2000 elections...it was obvious to me that when all else fails...the powers that be wil do what they want anyways..and the people i.e. US will allow them to do it without question. so therefore....im only voting out of respect.

I live in a predominately white suburban area north of Orlando. I waited about 45 mins to vote, last Saturday.

Probably 4 out of 10 folks standing in the early voting lines were black folks. Mostly couples from their mid twenties to senior citizens. White folks openly smiled at my wife and I and they were eager to startup conversations. The majority of the line was clearly pro Obama.

I told my wife that every white person that spoke was actually signaling us that they are voting for Obama too. There was even a group of about 10 jews waiting to vote for Obama. I know this because several of them had the Jews for Obama button on their shirts.

1st Hillary and now McCain/Palin struck a bell that they can't unstrike.

White supremacy and white is right has been challenged and defeated. In less than a year, the majority of voters in the USA has demonstrated that the playing field is not so uneven that a YT's whiteness is enough to just outshine a brother/sister in politics.

More importantly, Black folks can clearly see that YT's whiteness is not enough to blot out the advancement of black people.

Blacks in Politics, mount up, cuz it's time to ride.
