Well for one you can't put Stringer over Avon so this is really a battle between Avon and Marlo...

gota go w/ Avon . he was my fav character on the show. String started trippin towards the end and never really liked Marlo

THATS TRUE BUT HE WANTED TO BE HIS OWN BOSS AND THAT DIDNT WORK OUT

mike was the man

Marlo cause he walked away free in the end after having his crew murder like 30 people.

Neither if i had to call a drug boss from the wire the man i would give it to prop joe cuz he did all of what avon stringer and marlo did with out all the bodies the only murder the tied to ay of joes people was when cheese shot his pit.

But of the 3 you mentioned I would give it to avon just because of his. overall influence and his mental manipulations. they way he flipped that prison guard in season 2 was nice.

My bet will be Marlo since he is the only one that got out with money in pocket...the other two...one dead...and other locked up. Freedom is a winner to me.

Marlo was a ruthless killer..and was about getting money at all costs..dude had a crew of maniacal killers ready to do what he said at the drop of the dime..and they were effecient..and on top of that he got out the game with his life and his freedom..which is somethin neither Avon nor Stringer could say..

like someone above said..damn i miss that show lol...the series finale left alot of plotlines that couldve been expanded on..

Neither one of these assholes all they did was inflict genocide on their own people.

thank you for the obvious sir

the boy string had a vision. the other two were content to stay where they were until death or incarceration. i liked his character more

Can't say Joe cause when it's all said and done Marlo made Joe close his eyes.

Yeah I'm gonna have to give Marlo the close win on this one because he skated with the money.

However Marlo is not no Avon. Avon was tog dawg and he ain't have no problem keeping Stringer in check plus he always shitted on Prop Joe

Avon,hands down.

People give marlo to much fucking credit, without his muslce he wasn't a threat.

So Avon didn't have muscle?

Yeah he had muscle but the difference in him and marlo is that I think Avon would of put in work himself if it came down to him having to do so.Marlo is so fucking smart until I think he would rather tried to come up with a scene or plan rather than getting his hand dirty.

1. Marlo - Marlo was the most bloodthirsty and Spartan of the three. He didn't need family. He didn't need sophistication. He was as smart as any of the three, and able to compete mentally and militarily with all. He trusted no soul, not even Chris really. He'd turn on anybody, even his own troops if he felt they were weak or anything other than 1000% loyal.

However, Marlo was soulless in a way--his life was gray and brutal, he was like some kind of slim gray shark that lived to swim and kill. And emotionally, he was a fuckin' brat--couldn't take getting whupped in cards, couldn't take getting clowned by his enemies, he was petulant and petty and didn't respect the mandate to move quietly among civilians as much as possible. The Wire never solves this for the viewer but its my understanding that he felt more trapped in his suit playing the String role for the crackers than Avon felt locked up in Jessup, and eventually returns to the block and gets killed or jailed.

2. Avon - Was as smart as String and violent as Marlo, but unlike String he believed in honor and code--there's a WAY to being gangster that is sacred ("You know the difference between me and you? I bleed RED, you bleed GREEN.") This is because Avon came from a famous family of gangsters that ran Westside for most of the 20th century. There was a nobility in Avon all the others lacked, and even as Marlo took over after Avon's fall (which he played little part in), he couldn't get muthafuckas to shut up about the Barksdales, which annoyed him constantly. Even when he tried to circumvent the Co-Op, Avon tripped up his hustle and extorted 100 stacks out of him for the privilege of even SPEAKING to Sergei ("Boris...why always Boris?"). Avon believed in family, he built up the civilian community more than any of the three. He was the kind of crime boss the Law was willing to tolerate due to keeping the streets stable, with bodies and waves at a minimum.

3. String - I personally loved String's character the most because he saw the move Jewish, Irish and Italian gangsters made to legimitize and move the fuck off the block to bigger and better avenues of power. He studied military, economic and political philosophy and history and principles. He dug on Feng Shui and real estate and technology and black power. But String never really saw himself as 'hood in the way Avon, Marlo, Bodie, Mike, etc. did. He was coldhearted and selfish and willing to throw anyone under the bus if he felt it was the logical play in that situation. As much as I liked String, he did so much foul shit that after the shock of seeing him get dropped wore off, I had to admit he deserved it.

Me, I say Avon was ultimately the man over all the other gangsters, he just lost perspective after getting out of Jessup the first time and tried too hard to re-establish his rep. But it was clear that if String had not given Avon up to Major Crimes, Marlo was a fuckin' dead man.

Stringer probably would have came out to be the top dog in the end, if he didn't try to set-up Avon.

He was the only negro that actually broke through to Marlo (for a time) and could run the whole operation without a bunch of killing and bang-bang shit.

Avon was no different than any other hood king. He ran the business through the threat of violence and demanding loyalty, but he was respected because he gave back and would kick it.

Marlo was just fucking sick in the head! He ran the streets through FEAR and INTIMIDATION. He enjoyed the feeling of making other's suffer more than making money in my opinion. I mean dude had a security guard killed just because he told him to not take the candy.

......

But in the end, the Greeks actually controlled everything if you think about it. Drugs, Prostitution, The Docks ... all the Greeks. The were like the hidden hand that keeps shit moving along, yet no one knows who they are, how they came to power, and why they are never caught with dirty hands.

Then explain this:

Why would Chris hide some shit like that from Marlo?

Because he knew Marlo would be too willing to get his hands dirty and that might've caused a problem...
