need some help catching up on things. I've been reading a bunch of non-regular titles in both the marvel and DC universe, missing most of the big splash crossovers. I am trying to get a handle on the secret invasion series, as I always was a fan of the skrulls (the oft-punked super skrull in particular). I probably have not read much in the x-men family of stuff in 20-25 years, so I am definitely un-hip on those characters ( I was a fan of the original x-men, followed the new stuff for a while, then got ill with it when they introduced Kitty Pryde... nuff said).

Just a few questions about some (relatively) new characters:

1) who the hell is Sentry and what are his general powers. I have seen him referred to as one of the toughest guys in the marvel universe. Dunno more about him. I have not followed the Avengers with any regularity for years, but I tried to get on board with some of the "restart" of the series, only to not know who these guys are.

2) On that note, who the hell is Ares and where the hell did he come from. What distinguishes him from Hercules, Thor or even Gilgamesh(!).

3) On a slightly older school note, I remember seeing Booster Gold, but his image has persisted. I understand that he has no real powers, but is supposed to have access to some future technology. Is that all? Why does he still pop up here and there?
I simply never tried to figure it all out with him.

That's all for now. I probably would have more, except that have not read (but bought) all of the Hulk issues since they renumbered them ( I probably have about 150 unread hulks sitting around) and stopped reading Black Panther right about the time Hudlin took over (although I have tried to buy them all).

This thread has let me peek in on a few titles I would not buy but have been curious about. it's great, and thanks for all the experts on the board.

I told my "comic book guy"here in detroit that I don't think I am really a collector, just a pack rat that refuses to dispose of his comics.

That's how i got caught up with over 10 years of comics 95' - 06'. If it wasn't for wikipedia I might not be reading/posting comics now.

1) sentry was an add-in character that was "supposed" to have been forgotten, then re-discovered by everyone...kinda whacky background, he's nuts and has the power of a million suns...marvel's take off on superman.

2) Ares - herc's brother...when the "new" avengers were being formed, they said they needed a thor and a wolverine...so they got ares...which is kinda like both.

3) fuck if i know. DC sux.

“Rising Stars is a 24-issue comic book limited series by J. Michael Straczynski about 113 people (called “Specials”), as they are born with special abilities following a mysterious light in the sky. The comic explores how a society may react to the introduction of superpowers, and how those Specials may react towards society and each other. Rising Stars was one of the first comics produced under Straczynski’s own Joe’s Comics imprint for Top Cow Productions.
The story is narrated by the last living Special in the future, John Simon aka Poet. The story starts when the Specials are all grown up, but it constantly flashes back to when they were children. Through these flashbacks, the development of these 113 Specials is shown, starting with the government’s monitoring and handling of the events, to the manifestation of their powers, to the impact of these abilities on the afflicted children and the world around them. Some of the Specials use their powers for the good of the world, others for personal benefit and fame, whilst others simply wish to forget about them and live a normal life.
