It is a new version(well not so new) of segregation. If you pay attention to Atlanta, they are slowly making the city MUCH more expensive to live in. And we do still like grass so living in the ACTUAL city is gonna be more and more difficult.

While you are pointing out the so-called "growth" in the City Limits of ATL; you need to be aware that the City School System's enrollment IS DECLINING at the same time all those new properties are being built; that means that those folks that are buying that "new Real Estate" and those Condos DON'T HAVE SCHOOL AGED CHILDERN; as soon as they get CHILDREN that hit the age of 5 years old, they RUN TO THE BURBS FOR BETTER SCHOOLS.

The problem with this is assuming that moving out to the suburbs with white folks solves problems...it does not. Don't use Detroit as some overarching example of blacks in government when there are white cities and towns with even more corruption. This is also saying that a black neighborhood is destined to have bad schools, etc. The fact is that if educated, middle-class blacks would NOT move out of the cities and make neighborhoods just like the whites do, inner city schools won't be the way they are. Instead, we like to move out, send our kids to suburban white & private schools thinking that is the answer...

Ya know...that is a very good point. Many of the whites who do go back to the city are moving back because suburban sprawl has increased transportation and fuel costs. Sure, you get a spanking new Walmart, better services and manicured lawns in the burbs, but you also pay a premium on commute time and gas costs. I live right outside of DC near the Orange Line and can hit 95, Rt. 50 and the BW Parkway from where I am. It's only a matter of time before white folks will come to this little spot where I am and dump all that money in here. All I am thinking about is $$$ property value. DCPS is still jacked up and it will be a while before white folks put their kids back in there...charter schools are the wave of the future now.

Also...being wherever white folks are has never solved anything. There have been plenty of successful black communities across this nation that did not need white assistance in order to become that way. I think if anything, blacks should at least work towards recreating those types of communities despite the displacement. We've done it before and we can do it again.

It's still not too late........ all you have to do is take a stroll through the run down areas in your city and see what's for sale and BUY IT!!!! then fix it up yourself from the inside out (this helps Keep Property Value down as much as possible). Then in about 10 years ..... well you are in the driver seat you decide....The only problem is getting capitol to make the purchase and for a person to retire comfortably in 20 years he or she may need 3 or four houses that the mortages are paid for and that ain't no easy feat looking down the road 10 years from now. Just think in terms of long range and you will be alright and that is something we as a people don't do a whole lot of.

You think white folks are coming to PG other than the Laurel and Bowie area? The black folks coming out of D.C. are relocating in PG also. I have heard they are going to build a high rise at the New Carrolton metro station sometime in the future.

Yup. I own a condo in that neck of the woods now. There is some work to be done which is why I'm jumping headfirst into community organizing. With the developments planned, outskirt hubs like New Carrollton will appear more attractive to those who can't quite afford to live in the city limits (besides Deanwood and Capital Heights, etc.). White folks WILL come to the area if they see an opportunity and an opening. PG used to be white, so it's just going through a cycle right now...eventually they will be tired of driving into DC from WV, Loudon, Howard and St. Charles/St. Mary's. The trend out there is that you get a lot of house and land, moreso than the bordering counties, but they are paying a crucial price at the pump. That trend will be reversed if more development takes place. We are about 30 years behind on an effective light rail though.

Purple line is supposed to pass through here, but that is not without problems...

But remember like you I'm from New Orleans, so I've watched people get degrees and bolt to Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles and other places and speaking of Atlanta people from New Orleans have been migrating there since before ATL became the "it" spot for black people, it wouldn't suprise me if atleast 30% of ATL residents have New Orleans roots (not including evacuees). That shows people who aren't afraid to seek a better life and as I get older I respect that highly.

I love New Orleans but when you have politicians and respected ones at that going to jail behind bullshit and whoring out the city and long list of other things that ain't worth talking about sadly I am forced to look at life in other places.
