Today's Los Angeles Times has a story about Mena Suvari, who is starring in a new film, Stuck, by Stuart Gordon. She plays Brandi, a young woman who hits a homeless man with her car late one night, sending him right through the windshield. Brandi panics and drives home (with the guy still in her windshield) and tries to go on with her life. The plot is based on a true story — the woman's name was Chante Mallard, and she hit a homeless man in 2001 after she spent an evening smoking pot, drinking and taking Ecstasy with friends. Her boyfriend later ditched the body in a park. Mallard is now serving a 50-year jail sentence. Mallard, it should be noted, is black. Mena Suvari is not. But she does wear cornrows to play the role of Brandi.

In an interview with Premiere magazine, Mena says of the decision to have cornrows: "It was in conjunction with [director] Stuart. I think we just wanted to kind of establish Brandi as a particular kind of girl from a particular place. I think that we felt that it would be, like, Providence, Rhode Island, with a mix of cultures. That's kind of what we were going for."

Stuart Gordon, whose films include Re-Animator, Castle Freak and Space Truckers, has the right to take creative license and make what ever kind of film he likes. But why didn't he use a black actress? Why was it okay to just put blonde, ethnically Estonian Suvari in cornrows? Why have Angelina Jolie play Marianne Pearl? There are so few black actresses in great, meaty roles (Jennifer Hudson in SATC does not count) and most of the big releases have male stars. There's a lack of parts for women in Hollywood altogether — do actresses of color have a chance if white women can just put on some corn rows (or a curly wig) and play "a particular kind of girl from a particular place" ?

shaunte mallard went to school with my cousins. She was one of them "girls that noone really notice, but knew" according to my kinfolk. The shit was crazy when the stuff happened. Her so called friends stabbed her in the back, and the media had her convicted WAY before the trial.

I remember being in U.S. history *at this school I went to in the suburbs*, and the teacher *who was white* was talking about this. Everyone was convinced that this girl was some kind of sick monster. I'm in the classroom just shaking my head, listening to all these people *white/black/mexican* agreeing with the teacher/media before the trial even happens. The teacher asked me for my opinion *since I had the grade at that time*, and of course, I went against the grain. I was like "I don't think she did all of that on purpose. So before I convict her before the trial, I rather let her GO THROUGH the trial." Lets just say, that day, I didn't go to sleep in class.

Back to the subject, they better get a fat white girl to play Shaunte Mallard...

This sounds like a stupid movie, and the director is just making a dumb casting move.people on this board are so critical of tyler perry, but this is why the industry needs someone like him. who yeah his story lines aren't the best, but he's keeping black actresses working since they can't get the roles that should be given to them by more mainstream directors. This is B.S

That shit stupid. Is this to be another perpetuation of interracial relationships, where the Black man has some evil hold of a pretty misguided snow bunny? And why of all the stories would this one get picked to be made as a movie?

Doesn't make sense to me and seems a slap in the face of a young black actress who could've gotten a chance to shine. This movie is not like Devil in a Blue Dress or The Human Stain where white actors are somewhat needed to play black roles so the story is not given away.

I'm mad that the sister in the movie gets her ass whipped by bony ass guppie-face Mena Suvari and she shows the WHOLE kitten-caboodle.

This film is NOT a docudrama, but just a fictional story based on the general premise of what occured. Suvari isn't playing a BLACK character. The RACE of the lead character is irrelevant.

You already said that, step your game up famme.

That doesnt make any sense whatsoever!!!! and her comment to the magazine sounds... well it just sounds like a cover up

So what else is new. Remember this?

Angelina Jolie sparks casting controversy
Oscar winner to play biracial widow of slain Wall St. Journal reporter

updated 6:06 p.m. ET, Wed., Aug. 2, 2006

Aug. 2 - Mariane Pearl might be delighted to have actress Angelina Jolie depict her in an upcoming movie, but some of you are outraged.

Pearl is the tan, biracial widow of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, whose memoir, “A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl,” will be adapted into a motion picture by Brad Pitt's production company.

The film, simply called “A Mighty Heart,” will tell of Pearl's experience after her husband was abducted by Islamic extremists in Pakistan in early 2002. A month later, his captors released a video depicting his murder. Pearl, who is reportedly of Afro Cuban/Dutch heritage, was pregnant with their son Adam at the time.

Since the news came out a few weeks ago, message boards across the Internet have been on fire, expressing harsh criticism about Jolie playing the role of Pearl. On BET.com's own boards, user chantejoy calls the very idea a "new generation of Hollywood in blackface."

“With talent such as Halle Berry, Thandie Newton and Jennifer Beals available — just to mention a few — what is Hollywood's excuse for casting a white woman this time?” she asks. “Anyone who has seen a photo of Mariane Pearl can tell she is a woman of color.”

This crap has been going on for years!

Pinky_DVD_cover.jpg

The Caucazoid actress Jeanne Crain plays a "mixed' race women in the 1949 movie Pinky. Interestingly, although Ethel Waters is played as her mother, her father's identity is nowhere mentioned. I guess in a tacit way it is an admission of the white man's rape of the Black women.

This why I average one movie or so every three years and rarely watch television other than sports or documentaries. Our stories and our images have never been under our control positively or negatively and have rarely been told by us in the so called main stream media.

i thought this was already a movie or a tv episode????

coulda sworn i watched it..

no one remembers a movie where the girl kept going to her garage to see dude stuck in her windshield still alive and saying i'm sorry i'm sorry every couple of days?

This movie is out. You might have seen that. Or I'm positive it was a Law and Order episode too.
