Dumb and Dumber: Are Americans Hostile to Knowledge?

The concept of accepted truth:

I allow the established power, in which I accept without question, formulate what my beliefs are without any proof or facts.

I'll pick on Bush because he is easy: I will attack Iraq because they have WMDs. I still wage war in Iraq because, obviously, the terrorists prefer to fight me where I decide they will. We will win in Iraq because the terrorists are of finite numbers and if I killed enough of them, the war will be over.

Most Americans believe the above statement without question. Mindlessly ignoring that all of it was stated without fact or proof. Why? The drones of American society are TAUGHT not to think but to BELIEVE. Listen to Bill O'Reilly and check how he responds when a guest questions his line of logic in presenting his premise. Its always an illogical rant with the large majority of people doing the .

The only education you will receive in this country is the one you get yourself and is taught to you outside the traditional classroom. I went to an engineering school and as previous stated saw the art of negotiated grades being manufactured.

The only education you will receive in this country is the one you get yourself and is taught to you outside the traditional classroom.

Isn't that the truth..............

Couldn't have said it better. I've heard that our school system is based on the Prussian (present day parts of Germany, Poland, Russia Lithuania) education system. It was said that the Prussians lost wars because the populace was too well educated and questioned their government's motives for fighting(in other words they knew better than to follow their government blindly and didn't take any shit). This made the population more difficult to control, so in response to this they dumbed down the population with a more militaristic style education.

maaaaaaan, thanks for that information drop. I didn't know about that.

People think its cute to be dumb. Its really easy to notice when dealing with people in your everyday routine. Seems like 3 or 4 times a week Im looking at someone with the 'Are you serious?' face.

It all stems back to the educational system. One example is the damn FCAT test in FL. All year round kids are practicing for a TEST. Nevermind the other subjects... A Test! The high school curriculum does not prepare students for real world application either. I think they need to focus on finance, world politics, health, math and specific career paths.

Man I fuckin hated high school in Florida. Straight racist cracka bullshit.

Pushin niggas to play ball but let you care about learning... :dunno:

Let you step outta line...

:itsawrap:

My dawg stic.man NAILED it with this one. It was EXACTLY like this.

[flash]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xf1QcHs4vGY[/flash]

Fuckin undercover cops in the schools setting up drug stings.

Administrators fuckin over kids with detentions / expulsions on some "stay in yo place nigra" shit.

Shit my boy got expelled for making racially controversial art projects.

They have no interest in teaching people how to think in Fla, word the fuck up.

I miss home like shit now, go back often, and we got plenty of intelligent folk in the hood (believe or not, although BET would have you believe otherwise) but as far as the schools go they are a fuckin waste.

If you want the best education in the US, like everything else you gotta pay for it. Private schools are leaps and bounds better than public schools.

But other countries' PUBLIC schools are competitive with our private ones!

"Kids will learn, the question is where--school or the corners?"

- because black folks have swallowed that bullshit lie that an education is worthless b/c once you get it, "da white man" is going to swallow you up and you won't amount to shit anyway despite your hard work (thanks to jesse and dem)..but I'll that there

Where did the article refer to black people???

Whiteboy, watch your mouth..........

From the perspective of the extremely intelligent......most people are to dumb to hold more information than a cell phone.....couple phone numbers, a lot of songs, MAYBE a to-do list is all the average person can hold in their head at one time. Lets not even talk about international events/locations, history, and pray JESUS not math or science. I heard a nigga say "trees make wind" IN COLLEGE! This was the argument...."where does air/oxygen come from?" I said "trees". He says, "whats wind made of?" i said "air" he says "so trees make wind!" I said "look fool, trees dont wave by themselves and FAN wind around stupid....fuck is wrong with you... The sun causes wind...by making some air hot and some air cold, so it rises and falls, plus the earth spins, plus the ocean/tides.....nigga come on this is junior year..you learn that shit in 6th grade mmber the spiky cold front models and shit......blank look. Im tellin yall.......MOST PEOPLE ARE JUST DUMB.I personally blame females...if you all, who decide who breeds and who doesnt, would stop having babies with all these STUPID ASS NIGGAS the we wouldnt be inthis predicament....:D

WTF?!?!

:hmm::hmm:

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: :smh:

damn shame, goes to show that just because you've got some college experience that doesn't in the least bit make you intelligent. Just wow

Wow, fucked up shit Bro.................

:smh::smh::smh:

this school was fucking ridiculous. there was exactly one token black boy and girl in each grade. one token asian of each gender and one token latino of each gender. i addressed the student body on this for public speaking and got in trouble again

all the white kids had to do was be "popular" and have the "right friends" and be a carbon copy and they were set for life regardless of knowledge or intelligence or anything else. that is how this country works. just look at the current president.

I hear ya man. I went to private school in Delaware with the Dupont heirs and they were dumb as fuck. I remember trying to have a normal conversation with Irene Dupont and he couldn't follow at all. Nice guy (as far as I know), just utterly and completely devoid of any meaningful intelligence.

But, come to think of it, a lot of these elite, rich-scum interbreed with each other to keep their bloodlines pure--so a lot of borderline mental retardation can be expected--the bastards. Can't fucking stand these pieces of shit

Where did the article refer to black people???

Whiteboy, watch your mouth..........

- I was expounding on the example I gave...mofoes learn what they want to learn, that goes for everybody I would assume - but since I've primarily only lived amongst black folks, that is pretty much all I have to go off of.

I tell you, most of y'all are missing the point. It has nothing to do with individuals as much as it has to deal with the whole...and when I say that I mean the government. This government doesn't want you to think for yourselves...come on now! You think any government that would give "stimulus" money back to you, a measly $600 or so dollars so you can then go right ahead and spend it away, really thinks that the majority of it's citizens are intelligent?

The reason why we as a whole in this country are dumbed down is because it makes it easier for them to manipulate and control us. There isn't a great threat anymore like there was in the 50's and 60's with the Soviets or the communists as a whole. We pushed ourselves harder then to excel in math and science because we were up against a REAL threat. The shit that we deal with now is fabricated.

That's one way you should have been able to realize that this "war on terror" is bullshit...if it was that much of a threat as the Bush administration had lead this country to believe, wouldn't you have pushed for better intelligence in your citizens, military, central government, and school curriculums if you saw it as being a long term threat? What did this asshole do?...he continued to even dumb down the central government, all in the name of profit and manipulation of the general population. THIS IS NOT A CONSPIRACY THEORY...Seriously look around at the state of things and you will realize that even if teachers took the initiative to teach the kids what they ought to know, it would result in them hitting a wall at some point. It's up to parents, who have also been dumbed down to an extent, to teach their kids, and it's up to adults to unplug from the nonsense and teach themselves...

Wrong, its the parents. I could read the washington post at 3, what I couldnt outright "read" (big words), I could sound out...and then read after i figured out what it was supposed to sound like.....how many 3 year olds have I met that can read.....ZERO....but I taught my girlfriends son to read in a week and a half. He turned 3 in September I cant remember NOT reading....and it was why I knew/know so much more than 95% of people on earth (having a good sized library in the house helped too). T.v. was great, but we didnt get cable till 92...i wasnt allowed to have a tv in my room til college. Parents need to present their kids with more opportuniies to learn on their own. I learned on my own...mom dukes broke some adult shit down for me...but basic world knowledge, countries capitals, muntain ranges, wars, presidents, basic science. you have to make your kids think that shit is cool at an early age, and not let it be shaken. cause once kids think learning is dumb/geeky/or inferior, or a waste of time....its over for you. Who still gets national geohraphic? as a kid i loved those magazines....popular science..3-2-1- contact.....Yall, who call yourselves "parents" are the ones fuckin shit up. Not the MEDIA, or DISNEY, or HANNAH MONTANA, its you lazy ass so-called parents turning the raising of your children over to dora the explorer. Look at YOUR colleagues, you over 40 bastards, they are the ones that made COOKIE MONSTER eat BROOCOLI! need I say more?

Of course it is both the system and the parents. Although the idea that parents are in someway separate from THE SYSTEM is a bit of a misnomer. Of course parents are themselves a product of the system. And here in lies the vicious cycle in its entirety. Extensive studies have been done which show that there is a direct correlation between socio-economic status and the development of children intellectually and academically. Nutrition, financial resources, having educated parents ALL play a part in the academic and intellectual destiny of the child. This is why no child left unkicked is a complete sham. No policy that focuses solely on the child with the school shouldering most of the burden can possibly successful. But then it is not the intention of No Child to be "successful". The goal is to prove with empirical data that 1)public schools are incapable of addressing the needs of children. and 2) that the so called black white academic gulf is the result of the inherent and unalterable deficits of black children. This will pave the way for privatization of the school system...with them being run by big corporations...yet another step toward a fascist arrangement in the U.S.

As always a thought provoking and important post Baba. Tua!

ALAFIA!

Dumb and Dumber: Are Americans Hostile to Knowledge?

A popular video on YouTube shows Kellie Pickler, the adorable platinum blonde from “American Idol,” appearing on the Fox game show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” during celebrity week. Selected from a third-grade geography curriculum, the $25,000 question asked: “Budapest is the capital of what European country?”

Ms. Pickler threw up both hands and looked at the large blackboard perplexed. “I thought Europe was a country,” she said. Playing it safe, she chose to copy the answer offered by one of the genuine fifth graders: Hungary. “Hungry?” she said, eyes widening in disbelief. “That’s a country? I’ve heard of Turkey. But Hungry? I’ve never heard of it.”

Such, uh, lack of global awareness is the kind of thing that drives Susan Jacoby, author of “The Age of American Unreason,” up a wall. Ms. Jacoby is one of a number of writers with new books that bemoan the state of American culture.

Joining the circle of curmudgeons this season is Eric G. Wilson, whose “Against Happiness” warns that the “American obsession with happiness” could “well lead to a sudden extinction of the creative impulse, that could result in an extermination as horrible as those foreshadowed by global warming and environmental crisis and nuclear proliferation.”

Then there is Lee Siegel’s “Against the Machine: Being Human in the Age of the Electronic Mob,” which inveighs against the Internet for encouraging solipsism, debased discourse and arrant commercialization. Mr. Siegel, one might remember, was suspended by The New Republic for using a fake online persona in order to trash critics of his blog (“you couldn’t tie Siegel’s shoelaces”) and to praise himself (“brave, brilliant”).

Ms. Jacoby, whose book came out on Tuesday, doesn’t zero in on a particular technology or emotion, but rather on what she feels is a generalized hostility to knowledge.

She is well aware that some may tag her a crank. “I expect to get bashed,” said Ms. Jacoby, 62, either as an older person who upbraids the young for plummeting standards and values, or as a secularist whose defense of scientific rationalism is a way to disparage religion.

Ms. Jacoby, however, is quick to point out that her indictment is not limited by age or ideology. Yes, she knows that eggheads, nerds, bookworms, longhairs, pointy heads, highbrows and know-it-alls have been mocked and dismissed throughout American history. And liberal and conservative writers, from Richard Hofstadter to Allan Bloom, have regularly analyzed the phenomenon and offered advice.

T. J. Jackson Lears, a cultural historian who edits the quarterly review Raritan, said, “The tendency to this sort of lamentation is perennial in American history,” adding that in periods “when political problems seem intractable or somehow frozen, there is a turn toward cultural issues.”

But now, Ms. Jacoby said, something different is happening: anti-intellectualism (the attitude that “too much learning can be a dangerous thing”) and anti-rationalism (“the idea that there is no such things as evidence or fact, just opinion”) have fused in a particularly insidious way.

Not only are citizens ignorant about essential scientific, civic and cultural knowledge, she said, but they also don’t think it matters.

She pointed to a 2006 National Geographic poll that found nearly half of 18- to 24-year-olds don’t think it is necessary or important to know where countries in the news are located.

So more than three years into the Iraq war, only 23 percent of those with some college could locate Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Israel on a map.

Ms. Jacoby, dressed in a bright red turtleneck with lipstick to match, was sitting, appropriately, in that temple of knowledge, the New York Public Library’s majestic Beaux Arts building on Fifth Avenue. The author of seven other books, she was a fellow at the library when she first got the idea for this book back in 2001, on 9/11.

Walking home to her Upper East Side apartment, she said, overwhelmed and confused, she stopped at a bar. As she sipped her bloody mary, she quietly listened to two men, neatly dressed in suits. For a second she thought they were going to compare that day’s horrifying attack to the Japanese bombing in 1941 that blew America into World War II:
“This is just like Pearl Harbor,” one of the men said.
The other asked, “What is Pearl Harbor?”
“That was when the Vietnamese dropped bombs in a harbor, and it started the Vietnam War,” the first man replied.
At that moment, Ms. Jacoby said, “I decided to write this book.”

Ms. Jacoby doesn’t expect to revolutionize the nation’s educational system or cause millions of Americans to switch off “American Idol” and pick up Schopenhauer.

But she would like to start a conversation about why the United States seems particularly vulnerable to such a virulent strain of anti-intellectualism.

After all, “the empire of infotainment doesn’t stop at the American border,” she said, yet students in many other countries consistently outperform American students in science, math and reading on comparative tests.

In part, she lays the blame on a failing educational system. “Although people are going to school more and more years, there’s no evidence that they know more,” she said.

Ms. Jacoby also blames religious fundamentalism’s antipathy toward science, as she grieves over surveys that show that nearly two-thirds of Americans want creationism to be taught along with evolution.

Ms. Jacoby doesn’t leave liberals out of her analysis, mentioning the New Left’s attacks on universities in the 1960s, the decision to consign African-American and women’s studies to an “academic ghetto” instead of integrating them into the core curriculum, ponderous musings on rock music and pop culture courses on everything from sitcoms to fat that trivialize college-level learning.

Avoiding the liberal or conservative label in this particular argument, she prefers to call herself a “cultural conservationist.”

For all her scholarly interests, though, Ms. Jacoby said she recognized just how hard it is to tune out the 24/7 entertainment culture.

A few years ago she participated in the annual campaign to turn off the television for a week. “I was stunned at how difficult it was for me,” she said.

The surprise at her own dependency on electronic and visual media made her realize just how pervasive the culture of distraction is and how susceptible everyone is — even curmudgeons.

Of course, especially a majority of black people.

i remember reading an article in Time a few years ago discussing the dumbing down of the USA...they compared 4th grade curriculums from the 70's and today and the amout of information that has been removed is alarming, every year they make the school work simpler and simpler, teaching less and less...idiots are easier to control

Its the system, they do not want smart Americans.. just the illuminated ones and the dumb as shit ones...

Just because it's you that posted this will I think of reading this

So are you guys blaming the education system solely???

Is a teacher supposed to teach a kid everything he/she should know???

:confused::confused::confused:

you're confused? this right here makes no sense. only a very very very select few of us are able to self-teach and even the extent to that is limited. most are lost to knowledge of any manifestation except through the teacher/student relationship

There is a misguided philosophy in America where people believe that the school system is responsible for teaching our kids. (In a perfect world) Of course parents are supposed to teach their children. Problem is, there is no cultural foundation to go by. There is no gameplan passed down from generations past. When the kid isnt in school we expect the TV to do the rest, meanwhile between learning his ABC's little Billy just saw a commercial for toys. Distractions which lead to A.D.D. which leads to the want for INSTANT GRADIFICATION.

Who has time to study or learn when I all I have to do is 'Google' it.

BTW, this isnt a black or white thing - Its an American thing. Sadly when other nationalities are exposed to the American lifestyle they lose their way also.

Now Truly Close Thread

All I have to say is THANKS to the efforts of folks like Ms. Jacoby.

Further:

This virulent trend of Anti-Intellectualism has become the most consequential zeitgeist in modern history. It has been defined along a consonant schism wedged betwixt belief vs. critical observation that renders into crystalline focus the power childishly wielded by the tyranny of an ignorant, abdicating majority whom have become tacit, de-facto, YET clearly complicit soldiers, waging war against the very 'institution' that is responsible for our survival and advancement into the 21st century . . . 'The Thinking Man'!

This single phenomenon has and continues to be the bane of my (and I suspect many more) existence, as I traverse social and professional terrain, outmaneuvering minefields strewn with the
fatal munitions that are the products of illogic, unreason, and slothful, undisciplined epicureanism.

History does provide us with narrative accounts revealing a hypocritical acrimony and disdain for the 'Thinker' all the while those very critics herald every life improving/enhancing invention or discovery, yet demonizing, and castigating said thinking individuals as caricatured subhuman, antisocial, boring, weaklings whom are an impediment to 'the greater good'.

IT IS AS PERVASIVE and widespread as oxygen (. . . albeit the type you might have found in the smog filled skies of 80's era Los Angeles), feel me?

Given the historical record, replete with examples of my aformentioned musings, WHY WOULD ANYONE of venerable intellect extend an olive branch to such hostile antagonists of the rational mind?

Riddle me that.

JG

That's a pessimistic way to look at the world, but I must say, I am guilty of the same thoughts. Irregardless of the obstacles most intellectuals face, we still must lend a helping hand out to others who that have the potential to succeed. I've witnessed first hand many times the disenfranchised succeed, when someone actually gives the a helping hand they need.

Remember. Intellectuals have always been criticized and persecuted. There is nothing new under the sun. Duality will always remain, including dumb asses vs the smart guys.
