Ok I'll admit, i used to watch the series back then ..and yes Samantha was my favorite. But half way through i fell out of love with it. Now couple of years down the line since they released this new movie we're being bombarded with same old stuff and nothing new. Ridiculous gluttony disguised as responsible fun.

Surely there's a lot more to life than a gossiping neurosis. It worked even ten years ago, but now the price is too high to pay for a 2 and a half hour TV episode at a theater. How pathetic a society have become when this trash is so popular.

Women who love the show and now the movie should never wonder why they are not taken more seriously. I will always commend Sarah Jessica Parker for her contribution to sleeze after being bombarded with her interviews , puff pieces, reviews, approving descriptions of the phenomenon, of the "wonderful fashions!" and the "lifestyle" and all the allegedly insightful things it shows about aging women looking for their "mates," &c. &c. &c.


The truth remains, her character is one of the neediest, whingiest and intermittently most annoying female character ever created in the history of film making.

Another disappointment..ohh its embarrassing even to admit but maybe because I AM a hopeless romantic I wanted to see the beautiful wedding and wedding vows, instead, they chose to do it in City Hall (BLAH!!!).

lastly, still dont understand the point of having Jenifer HUdson in the movie at all.

Considering that I was looking forward to this movie, first I would like to thank you for ruining a big part of it.

Secondly I don't get your basis..... Sex and The City was a hugely popular show for the differences from other shows it had, for the issues it showed, not everything in the world is political and religious, most of it is just life make decisions and the show showed that off in the age boundaries of these women. It showed love for a city, it showed relationship values, wants, needs, problems that older women face, and showed entertainment in the funniest, sexiest, and sometimes raunchiest of ways. I don't get how this movie coming out and the fans of the show being excited is deemed as trash. The movie in itself has shown that the entertainment, and the surprise to the fans is alluring. There is nothing wrong with people wanting to see entertainment for entertainments purpose.
 
Sometimes I wonder what's wrong with me??? Why do I feel the need to run like hell away from shows like this....then I remember watching 90210 like it was my job and then I understand.

All my girls watch this show and make me feel like an alien because I don't.

I have to say that I dont understand boro's obvious contempt for the show. The statement that women who like this show should not wonder why they aren't "taken more seriously" is ridiculous. It's a show. It's entertainment. Of course women can see parts of themselves in every single character, but that connection is what makes people watch and stay interested in most shows & movies.

From prior posts I think boro is a man, which also adds some insight. Many men saw and still see Sex & the City as a male bashing show. Part of the draw of this show was that it showed things from a FEMALE perspective, which is lacking from television and the big screen. Men mess up, do and say dumb things, and can be used a boy toys. Men are used to being in control of these things. It's tough for them to see it this way.

Contrary to popular belief, the show is about love, finding it and keeping it. It's like women can't be seen as people with faults who do more than have kids and take care of a man.

Why can't J Hud be in the movie? She is refreshing in the movie.

I just don't see how people can take the movie soooo seriously...

Thank you. People are getting hyped up over a freaking movie. If you don't like it...keep it movin!

I guess the OP has the same contempt for movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman, Spiderman, etc that have a lot of hype and followers surrounding it.:rolleyes:
 
boro can you please put (SPOILERS) in the title. I would be mad as hell had I not already saw the movie.

For the life of me I can't understand the selfishness in people who see a movie or a show, then ruin it for other who haven't seen it. Give people the option of deciding if they wanna know whats gonna happen before it happens.:smh:
 
1st, for the people who haven't seen the movie... don't let anyone stop you from going to see it. I think they truly did the fans justice with this movie. It was like watching a whole season. I am going to see it again on Tuesday.

Now for the folks who saw the movie... call me crazy but I walked away from this movie with the realization of "It's ok to be single in my 20's" its not till I turn 40, that its a problem lolllll.

After I walked out of the movie I texted my "on again off again" and simply said "I now understand why we aren't together and I am ok with that... take care of yourself". I am tired of being sad and through watching SJP in all her non flattering closeups helped me achieve that.

Now this is for all of the ladies.... I believe in love. I believe that there is one person out there for me. I believe in romance and the institution of marriage...... and through the love and romance we will achieve great sex everyday within our marriage!:yes:lollll Apparently I am not the only woman who believes in that hence SITC being so popular. It was refreshing to be in a theater with a million other broads ooooouing and awwwwing @ all the different scenes.

SJP is not perfect and neither is Mr. Big but through their imperfections they owned up to them and came together.

Lastly I like the message of forgiveness in this movie. How many people out their can't comprehend this simple act.

Anyways that was my $2 worth...
 
Like I said, I haven't seen Sex... in the theatre yet but I am looking forward to it. I like the show because it shows women who are not in college or in there 20s and how they view love, it shows career, fashion forward, single, older women and there handle of making it in love in a big city, loving, learning, and growing. I love there friendship, I love the laughs because eventhough I'm not there yet, I still see some of those conversations in women my age and older. I love that is entertainment with the hint that this has a ring of realness to it. I love that.... I understand where men would see this series and movie as a male-bashing phenomenon but its not, its about looking at how women handle situations that men dish out and vice versa. The show was good and I know the movie is doing it justice.

I agree on the bolded part...Forgiveness was a huge theme running through this movie and not only did I love that message, but I love the freakin fashion...how COULD you be a female and NOT love the fashion?!?

im am pretty sure that New Yorkers are more likely to be shopping for a new job than accessories considering dollar has fallen and this led to to designer inflation for European goods.

I’m reliably informed that the price of a pair of Manolo Blahniks has doubled in the past few years not sure about Christian Louboutins though further more you cant deny that New York’s high-end shops increasingly rely on foreigners taking advantage of the weak dollar. Thankfully, they can’t get enough of SATC and there are still plenty of them around, for the moment.

Now as far as the movies in concerned...yes i agree the girls lunched,they drunk,they hugged and they shopped and drool over designer labels. But nothing can hide the fact that they are mutton dressed in Prada and ohhh the 2½ hours, near enough – seems like an awful long time to spend with those irritating, self-obsessed women, however much you may have missed them.

Ohhh that throwaway Diane Arbus gag from Carrie’s editor at Vogue is priceless....

Mhhh dont know about that but all i know is film knew fans will expect fashion, and good enough shit loads of whole sequences have been created for no other purpose than to allow Carrie to show off her wardrobe and guess what? we even get her showing off the wardrobe she used to wear in the TV series, including that silly tutu number from the opening credits (makes you ask how did the worst-dressed woman in the history of television ever become a fashion icon?)

Anyway,I'm so certain that the SATC movie will flop like a discarded corsage into the black bin bag of history is the reason it had to disappear from our screens in the first place. It had become not just dated, but embarrassingly so. But then again its being marketed as a girly flick so anything can happen

The bottom line is SATC was never about liberation, but simply presented a new model of thralldom for women. In the 1950's women may have been trapped in domesticity, while told they should be grateful for the security, but SATC trapped its women in a world of pure image and artifice and told them that they should be grateful for the glamour.


and the image of ideal womanhood that SATC celebrated was uniformly thin to the point of anorexia, hairstyled to catwalk perfection and on trend to the point of exhaustion. Yes I am confessing that i used to watch the series and you cant deny that women were also encouraged to be sexually competitive in a way that made the men they pursued not individuals who were destined to become intimates but captive animals to parade, and then dissect, in front of others...surely you must know who I am talking about here..the man eater herself!
 
I've always wondered why this show resonated with women of color. Fashion aside, what is the draw? It feels like Barbie come to life...except the black Barbie still lives in Washington Heights.

what the fuck show were you watching??? Have you seen the different characters... sure Carrie was all about labels and blah blah, but um you have Miranda, who was not label obsessed and by no means fas perfection... They are actresses, they are going to be skinny, come on now... when we watch the show, we know that its not their sizes and fashion that we are admiring, its their struggles with love and life that women relate to. We (women) have all had that on again off again lover, that boyfriend who couldn't kiss, we've had tests in our friendship.... that is what the show represents.. not the materialistic shit... that's just an added bonus!!!
 
I loved the movie!!!! I laughed, I cried, I gasped! LOL, i would def. see again. And while I do hate the lack of color on the show, I felt Jennifer Hudson's role was kinda.... whack... sure I like her and all, but I felt her acting was subpar and her character was too corny... I think they could have did more with that role.. I would have loved to see the rough cut and see what they removed....

Jennifer Hudson isn't necessarily a great actress to begin with, but that's a totally different subject. She's an awesome singer, though.........<--- is that Blunt bait?

As a man half way through the series i found it degrading to women. Seriously, if you look deep you will realise that the 4 main characters you mentioned are meant to be liberal, intelligent, successful women.

Yet all they can bring themselves to talk about is their love lives. Is this a true representation of modern women? Are all women so obsessed with men? I doubt it

and ohhh that Samantha...ohhh dear, it was a poignant creation, attempting to hold back the years by taking refuge in an increasingly shallow hedonism while a new seriousness was gripping everyone else...nice!

Its simple, I was stuck in a shit hole and all we could watch from the States was SATC..so in the end i got to understand the whole concept...when the movie came out, they had their premier here in London and yes got free tickets so thought, at least i am not spending my quids on it

Yes it was tiring being in the cinema in Leicester Square(here in London) but none of these problems seemed apparent to the women who sat around me in there , laughing and weeping in quick succession and you know what? after a while I began to reason like one of the characters: maybe the problem was me.

Everyone else, being in possession of more than one X chromosome, seemed entirely satisfied by what they were served...the orgy

And gosh didnt they have strange codes those girls? and yyes they were talking about sex in front of a child, referring to the act euphemistically as “colouring”


And how often did Miranda do colouring? Not nearly enough!

Samantha, the goddess single of older women, of course liked to use all the crayons, while Carrie Bradshaw, our narrator and lead, said that when Big coloured “he doesn’t always stay inside the lines.” I was WTF! then remembered the series

Ohh dear

I am not saying Indiana Jones was any better either but SATC just went beyond hysteria here in London and I just hope I wont see SJP on telly again next week

-I guess you missed Carrie's episodes about her book being published... AND the show is based on her COLUMN!
-You must have missed miranda's frustration with being a PARTNER in a law firm and trying to juggle that with new motherhood..
-or you missed charlotte looking for work again in a art gallery. Or when they went to many of the shows at her gallery...
-Samantha also had many instances that revolved around her career as a Publicist...

stop picking and choosing what you want to dissect... but as a man, i don't really expect you to understand, even if you watched the show religiously every day, you still wouldn't "get" half of it...
 
boro just needs to stop. he hated the show but saw the movie. it doesnt matter that he had free tickets. if i ALREADY know i dont like something, why would i 1) accept free tickets, and then 2) attend the show. :smh:
 
Women of all races connect because the issues they address are universal. Liberal, successful and intelligent women aren't superheros, they're human. They're meant to be flawed and conflicted - you know...like everybody else. They don't have a better understanding of relationships because they have money. We ALL make mistakes, good and bad choices, get hurt, have great sex, have bad sex, fall in love, break up, etc. The humor and fashion just add to the backdrop.

What did I get out of it? Happiness is attainable, but it may not come the way you expected. Don't compromise who you are - love yourself first. Nobody's perfect. Be loyal. Don't be selfish. Forgive. Love. etc.

I saw the movie in a white town. Groups of girlfriends were showing up - all decked out with great shoes on - having a ball. Acted like a bunch of Trekkies or something - sold out shows - people waiting in lines to get in - hollerin and clapping in the theater...not a flop.

Bottom line - it's entertainment. Lots of movies come out every week - if its not your cup of tea, don't watch.

BTW, she did comment on things being overpriced and they mentioned bagborroworsteal.com. They even went to the Bluefly showroom for one of the photoshoots...but rich people have not stopped spending...

LOL - Gurl, I refused to watch Friends cuz I didn't want to get on the band wagon...then I started watching it in syndication...it's actually really funny ;)

But if you decide to watch - get the DVDs - the edited version on syndication is wack.

Girl I feel you. I've spent so much money buying my sister the boxed sets. So I decided to give the show a chance one night. IMO it's about not-so-young unmarried women trying to assert their independence all while staying in fabulous fashion. One of them looks like a horse with the body of a crackhead. She's supposed to be the ideal woman. Another one is a whore, pretending to be a nympho. The other one is so passive it made me want to throw up. And the last one was so desperate to have a baby, she got pregnant by a gump. I couldn't relate to any of them. None of my friends watch it either--only my sis & her friends and they're all in their 30s. You couldn't pay me to see this movie :smh:

I think the bad reviews, and the negative stigma from men are just men not wanting women to have anything.

You don't see women being terribly critical of men and what they watch and view as entertainment and remember for some men starting at a pair of boobs is entertainment.

I was reading bad reviews all over about SATC and then realized they were all written by men.

I'd rather men just say, I just don't get it because that's good. You don't have to and actually maybe we don't want you to.
 
I hated the show and have zero desire to see the movie even when it comes on cable. The sex and the city wanna be bitches that are all over this city annoy me more than words can describe. This show played a large part in the destruction of the remaining underground of NY :hmm:

The series used to satirise consumerism - now it embraces it. It used to be about shagging, but now it's turned into a mid-life crisis soap opera. I mean, I'm all for rich white 40something New Yorkers complaining about how rough their lives are, but could they at least do it with some humour?

And what was with Jennifer Hudson appearing as Carrie's housemaid? (Sorry, I meant "personal assistant"). Her character was basically Mamie from "Gone With the Wind", complete with sassy "black talk", though this time she didn't have to shell peas and she even got the World's Ugliest Louis Vuitton handbag (colostomy bag, more like) from Carrie as a present. Awwww - isn't it nice when The Blacks get to aspire to being materialists like their white superiors?

but my watershed moment was when I saw an episode and they completely lost me when they decided after much agonizing that it just wasn't cool to have Louis Vuitton knock-off bags,Yes i admit that i am abit of a fashionista but I mean it's got to be the real thing or nothing.

For example this one is real and its over $1000 and its real

Maybe it's just that they don't like what's on screen. I've seen plenty of women give it bad reviews.
