Marbury says he wants to stay and play for 'new regime'
ESPN.com news services

The New York Knicks welcomed Mike D'Antoni with open arms, but now it's time to see how D'Antoni approaches Stephon Marbury.

Marbury, who is coming off season-ending ankle surgery, attended D'Antoni's official introductory news conference Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.

His mere appearance was quite a change from this past season, when former coach Isiah Thomas essentially told Marbury to stay away from the Knicks when they were playing at home.

Stephon Marbury
Stephon Marbury said he's altered his training routine to adapt to Mike D'Antoni's plans.

"I think it's great. It's new life. Having a guy who's an upbeat coach, an upbeat style, [it'll] make us play different," Marbury said in the New York Post. "Bringing in a new regime is definitely gonna mix things up. People have been getting a taste of something for a long time. Now they want something different."

Marbury, due to be paid $21.9 million in 2008-09 in the final year of his contract, professed his desire to remain with the Knicks, and said he even has begun a new routine to adapt to D'Antoni's favored run-and-gun scheme.

"I changed my whole workout regimen to get ready for him," Marbury said in the New York Daily News. "I've been doing what Karl Malone did, running up the mountains. I think from watching how the Suns play and the way he allowed Steve Nash to orchestrate certain situations, I could see myself fitting into that." Marbury and D'Antoni had a brief spell together in Phoenix, after D'Antoni was promoted to head coach of the Suns and before Marbury was dealt to the Knicks in January 2004.

The split was a "business decision," D'Antoni acknowledged Tuesday, adding, "I have no problem with Steph whatsoever. I think he's a very talented basketball player and I look forward to working with him ... He needs to be put in certain situations. He has strengths we need to play to. We have to try to maximize that and not worry about the weaknesses."

Whether Marbury actually will work in D'Antoni's plans remains to be seen. Marbury is not exactly a fan favorite, having missed 58 games in 2007-08 because of his ankle injury and the death of his father.

"I understand people are mad with me and they're frustrated with me as far as how I've played the last couple of years," Marbury said in Newsday. "It was a difficult situation for me, but I think going forward, I have nothing but love for New York."

FUCK MARBURY I can't wait until they trade his tired ass outta here!. Nuthin worse then paying for a fukkin knicks ticket only to have to sit here painfully and watch him slough it off or make bonehead thugball plays. I hate this nikka! I hope Dantoni trades him off!

Either release him or suspend him for the rest of the season and try to enter the Lebron sweepstakes because he comes of the books this year. (I think) We have been this bad for so long let's just rebuild this shit for once and for all.

YEA he has to rebuild the team from the ground and get the pieces in places for lebron to take the knicks back to the top

trade marbury and jefferies and richardson

And let Nate run point? I mean you ninjas really think Lebron wants to bounce? Although NYC is the #1 market for anything period it would be a good look.

I think the new coach is in a win win because she gets a team that he can build from scratch.

I hope Isiah gets black balled from the NBA all together.

Yall cats really think lebron is leaving? For what? He will get anything he wants here, he calls the shots and gilbert lets him.

If you are hoping on that is how the knicks will turn around the situation is hopeless.

o we already kno next season is miami in ny...

lebron is goin to exit...mike brown is goin to get fired first then lebron is goin to leave...

Well seeing as tho D'antoni traded him three weeks after getting the phoenix job...tough break. He still gets like 30 mil over the next 2 years anyway

Mavs may have been garbage in the 90's but it wasn't by pipe dreamin' hopin' we'd sign Shaq or Tim Duncan when they contracts go out lol. We got good by drafts and taking chances on cats like Steve Nash. That's what the Knick's need to do. Fuck givin' cats 10 million dollars a year after 1 good season. That's what they fool of. Dudes who were hot in the last year of their contract and fooled some dumb ass team to give them max money.

Marbury ain't going nowhere because no one wants him. He's not a bad player but he gets paid crazy money. He gets paid to be a superstar. No team wants that cats contract. No one. Only way you can get rid of Marbury and his contract is to pack him along with something valuable. Like you're #1 pick and you're not going to do that. Atleast you shouldn't. Maybe someone wants Nate Robinson or David Lee? You gotta package someone with him just so a team can even think about taking Marbury's contract. It was just like when the Mavericks traded for Nick Van Exel. They wanted that bum Raef Lafrentz but in order to get him they had to take on Nick's contract.

i do remember the mavs being garbage for a good long period of time

u mofos cant even win it all when u had a good solid chance

But Mav fans weren't saying...hey when Jordan becomes a free agent we are gonna pick him up

Knicks lost the last time they were in the finals in 99 and don't bring up no 1974 ass title or some shit like that either

Thank you..no need to low blow the Mavs cuz they are in here pipe dreamin...

we are to much in debt to do anything until the 2010 season...

but it could happen that bron goes to the knicks

u kno we pickin o.j mayo in the draft rite

NY with LA, MIA, CHICAGO, are big market teams...

he loves the YANKEES and will probably be willing to leave...

and even ESPN cats said when the NETS come to BROOKLYN...HOV will try to woo him there since they are cool...

WADE can also be an option....

OJ Mayo? That's if ya'll get like the 6th or 8th pick in the draft. If ya'll get a top 3 pick ya'll better not take that cat. Beasley and Rose should be the 1st cats taken off the board. Knicks will get a top 2 pick. Mark my words.

I say let Marbury play the year out. Let him go at the end of the season and his 20+ mil comes off the books. You never know, he might just play hard (likely) and smarter (unlikely) because this is a contract year and he'll probablly never see more than the veteran's mid level exception deal if he doesn't come with it this year.

o no doubt beasley n rose are the top picks and im sure the knicks will get a top 5 pick...

im not sure if O.J is a stud on the nba level just base on his size...but i can see that OJ mayo jersey flyin off the self

i actually like CDR alot!!!

I read that O.J was a nba pick when he was in the 9th grade....crazy

You can't tell them NY niggas nothing, Lebron is coming baby yeah...:smh:

Lebron is happy in his hometown, and has everything he wants. He ain't leaving for a few more dollars.

:smh: you niggas are retarded, your only hope for winning is stealing all-stars from other teams. The owner of the Cavs would offer Lebron ownership before he let him go. You wonder why your team sucks and your no long on throne with in it comes to hip hop.

Yea I always wanted to know wha the fuck was up with Darius Miles in Portland? He can ball too. Just fucked himself up. I know its on some personal shit. It was when Mo Cheeks was there anyway. I'm guessin' Nate McMillan havin' the same problems. I heard Miles knees is fucked though. I don't know if that's the excuse for him not playin' or what.

I could see Wade bein' a Knick. You gotta understand how these cats be thinkin'. Some guys want to be "The Guy" for their team. New York is the biggest market in sports. Playing for the biggest market in sports=endorsements. I can see Wade goin' to the Knicks. Especially if the Heat keep playing like shit and Marion leaves for nothing. I don't see Lebron goin' to the Knicks because A)He's Cleveland born and B) he's to Cleveland what MJ was to Chicago. Not to mention he's bigger than the Owner of the Cavs. He runs that team without the title of President or CEO. In New York he doesn't get that same right. Lebron gonna get some bread. Around 20-25 million. Knicks have a long way to go to get 25 million under the cap.

i think these people might have something to say about that.....
