There's a drink that a bartender invented (called a Blood Bath) that's pretty smooth and mellow, but packs a hidden whallop:

Merlot
Bit of Chambourd
Splash Cranberry
Shake over ice and serve in wine glass

If your friend is not a wine drinker per se, the Chambourd sweetens up the wine, takes away the after-taste some people notice in wine and adds a kick. The Cranberry smoothes it out.
