I have been wanting to go natural for so long....I went without a perm for almost a year but I just broke down recently and got another perm and my hair is long as hell now. I hate it. I want to have my natural curly state but I was scared and intimidated and a lot of other things, one being lazy. My dream hair is my own, natural hair, shoulder length and curly. I might give it another shot. I heard Miss Jessi's hair products are the best for natural hair. An old roommate of mine, he whole family has natural hair and thats what they use. Gorgeous hair man!

One day, I will join the ranks! I don't have a problem with wearing weave, since I'm kind obsessed with curly hair, but I would love to have my own head be curly.

I hope so. If just one person is affected by this thats enough for me. I got so into wearing perms that I damaged my hair and it would not grow for nothing. But now it is more healthy and full than ever. And it is growing like crazy. Chemicals really do slow down the growing process.

All I can say is it's the best thing I have done for myself in a long time. If you wear weaves, you can do what I did. Keep your natural hair braided underneath. Hey it's a start. The sooner you get started the longer it will be.

I wrote this while I was at work trying to make myself feel better.

For some time now. I’ve been growing out my natural hair. I’ve been hiding it under braids and weaves while in my transition. I see some length in it so I finally got up the nerve to wear it out. I went to work with mixed emotions. In one thought, I’m so proud of myself for going this long without putting any chemicals in my hair & taking out the the fake hair. In my other thoughts I’m skeptical about it being socially acceptable.
Anyway to make a long story short. When I went to work, I heard snickers all day. As the day progressed, it just got worse. I caught people making faces behind my back. And I overheard them laughing at me. Some people that usually speak would not even look at me. They stared at me and I felt like I was the joke of the day. By the end of the day I was even contemplating on buying a textur-izer. True story..............
With that said. I understand why black women hide behind weaves and perms. Because they try to make you hate yourself and who you are in your natural state. I also realized that you have to be a really strong female to wear naked virgin hair in this day and age.

I personally like natural hair, but if you work in a corporate environment it gets tricky. I see it with my professional lady friends all the time. Compared to the women I know who work in academia, are going to school, etc., those women I know who are lawyers, businesswomen, etc. wear weaves and relax their hair all the time. It's unfortunate, but that's usually the way it goes in this society. Where I went for undergrad, those who were in the business school had to wear "conservative" hair styles, even the women.

Yeah, I don't see any natural women where I work. I barely see any natural women anymore at all unless I'm in NYC. I see more men doing it, but even now if you go to the store men have a wide selection of texturizers, 360 spinnin, s-curls ect.... I guess it's different everywhere. But it's good to hear what different people from around the world have to say about it.

To the OP ... girl I feel you 100% on this tipWhen I first started growing my hair out natural I got CLOWNED by almost everybody. I never put a weave in while it was growing I just used to have my homegirl braid it for me ... now this was before the video hoes made braids on a woman cool so the boys told me I looked like a boy ... asking me what happened to my "nice straight hair"and these were Black men making these commentsThen when my natural hair grew to a certain length I cut my permed hair off and just rocked a short curly do ... oh boy ... this lady told me never to leave my house like that ... my girls would laugh at me ... but I had a bigger picture in my head so I just took it and chilled

Fast forward over 10 years later and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall I hear now is "OMG ... your hair is so beautiful" from all that showed hate before ... I aways remind them "remember when you used to clown me?" ... lol ... moral of the story is DO YOU CUZ AT THE END OF THE DAY IT WILL PAY OFF

People in Canada are weird.

You can be rastafarian with out the dreads it's not a requirement.

Haile Selassie didn't even have dreads.

Rastafarians adopted growing dreads and not cutting your hair from judaism and christianity.

Other religions practice growing dreads too.

I didn't like dreads until recently when my bf grew them. I wanted to hurt her at first because they always look dirty and unkept but when she did hers they were beautiful... And she explained to me that those who do it for religion are not ones to keep it up because they are anti-...uh...anti keeping up hair .
