No-shows abound at Soul Train awards

Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, and Jamie Foxx are among the award winners on a night marked by absentees.

The 21st annual Soul Train Music Awards were handed out Saturday night, but the event was hit with a rash of no-shows, as eight of the 10 award winners did not attend the event.

Although the event featured performances from Jennifer Hudson, Robin Thicke, and Rick Ross, honorees like Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, John Legend, and Gnarls Barkley were nowhere to be found at the event, held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium Saturday night.

Hudson took home the 2007 Sammy Davis Jr. Award for entertainer of the year, while Beyonce won for best R&B/soul single, female for "Irreplaceable." Mary J. Blige won for best R&B/soul album, female for The Breakthrough, while Ne-Yo nabbed the best new artist prize.

Gnarls Barkley won for best R&B/soul single by a group for "Crazy," while newcomers Webstar and Young B's "Chicken Noodle Soup" claimed best R&B/soul or rap dance cut.

Songwriter/producers Jermaine Dupri and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds were the night's special honorees, taking home the 2007 Quincy Jones Award for outstanding career achievements and the Stevie Wonder Award for outstanding career achievements in songwriting, respectively.

Hosted by singers LeToya Luckett and Omarion, the event also featured a James Brown tribute by Ronald Isley, who is set to begin a 37-month federal prison term for tax evasion later this year.

The Soul Train Music Awards will air in national syndication the week of March 17 to 25. Winners are determined by a panel of radio programmers, artists, and retailers.

*The "hippest trip in America" has pulled the plug on its annual award show. Reuters Life is reporting that the Soul Train Music Awards has been cancelled without explanation.
The brainchild of former Chicago DJ Don Cornelius, "Soul Train" was due to celebrate its 22nd award show this year, but a spokeswoman for the program said the show would not go ahead as planned.
At last year's event in Pasadena, many of the winners did not bother to attend, including such A-listers as Beyonce Knowles, Mary J. Blige, John Legend and Gnarls Barkley.
"Soul Train," meanwhile, ended its historic run in 2006. It was distributed by Tribune Entertainment, which exited the syndication business when billionaire Sam Zell took its Tribune Co. parent private late last year in a highly leveraged deal.

They would have shown up for the Grammys or the Oscars though. :smh:

they're more glamorous and have more of a tradition than the Soul Train awards.

The Oscars and Grammys are considered the most prestigious awards in acting and music, why would you shake your head?

cuz i can....and its not a matter of prestige. Why should you hold those awards at any higher a level that Soul train. Where you are being recognized by your "actual" peers.

I personally think all these awards should be done away with. :smh: look I did it again

"The Soul Train Music Awards is an annual award show aired in national syndication that honors the best in Black music and entertainment."

or

"The Grammy Awards (originally called the Gramophone Awards)—or "Grammys"—are presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States for outstanding achievements in the record industry"

I prefer the award for being the best, period. Not for being the best black person.

Grammy's also have more history. I'm older than the Soul Train Awards!

Anywho, why do you think the awards should be done away with?

I remember watching the first BET awards and thinking they'll never do this again because no one showed up. :smh: Guess Soul Train said if they not gonna appreciate us then we not gonna do this mess anymore.

The Grammy's has always been a boring ass show too.

At least Don Cornelius gave it a shot.

Nah, the Oscar's are the boringnest show on television:smh:

I had that misconception about the Grammy's as well, but the quality of the show rests on the acts they get to perform.

Nothing can save the Oscar's, though:smh:

Soul Train had more urban acts than the Grammy's, so I can see why you would find it more amusing
