thinking about moving down there

i only passed through once, leaving ATL,,, the downtown was more developed than i thought it would be,,, didn't look as country as i would've imagined,,, that was only a glimpse from the hwy though

What kinda of city it is
is it still racists as hell
are there good tech jobs
the housing market
just basic facts from people who know, not stats from a website

You can find a decent house, but the hood is just a stones throw away.

I've never experienced racism in Birmingham, but I never really met any white people in Birmingham.

You'll be hard pressed to have a good time, unless you're young and don't mind the inevitable shooting later on.

But you'll most likely be bored...

Birmingham itself is okay at best. There are some surrounding cities like Hoover, Homewood, etc that are better. It's not as racist as most folks may think. Birmingham is mostly black, so the racist stuff you usually hear about in the south aint that big of a deal here. Not sure about the tech job market. As for housing, it depends on what you're looking for. Just avoid the general Birmingham area and shop around the outskirts of town. There are some nice homes that won't cost you an arm and a leg.

i've lived in baton rouge, n.o. & atl,,, was expecting to deal with racism when i moved down south,,, ironically, i experienced more racism in the midwest & east coast

Co-sign. Hwy 280 is straight too, plenty of eating and shopping.

I have to agree with everything that has been posted about Birmingham. I moved down here 6 years ago from NYC and have been bored as hell. The tech market is pretty good but make sure you don't jump for the first job you are offered, they will try to pay you a little of nothing for a mountain of work. I live in Hoover and work out on 280 so I will let you know that you can find a nice place to live. Just watch out for po-po, they do profile in the nice areas.

The State of Alabama doesn't support Porn...
If you mail porn to AL..Your subject to a $20k fune and jail time
If you like watching plants grow it can be a nice place
If your into your studies..youll have time to get it.

It is the Land where my fathers died...

Birmingham is a cool place if you don't mind the slower paced city as apposed to for instance atl, mia, ny, etc. You will be able to find a tech job in a matter of weeks here provided you have the proper experience or education, I work at Al power and the problem we have is finding people qualified. There are things to do here just no tourist attractions (if you don't live here you will have no idea where to go), for instance No Peachtree St. like atl, No strip like Mia, No Casinos like Vegas. Most of what you here are about the ghetto infested clubs with hoodrats and shootouts which is true but there are places to go that are chill and more grown up. Best thing to do is buy on the outskirts of the city, Like Trussvile, Hoover, Gardendale, Chelsea, or Calera.

Pros:

1. Tech Job would be easy to come by
2. Housing is affordable
3. Tech pay vs bills= money to play with
4. Close to Tn, Atl, Fl

Cons

1. No Pro Sports
2. Slower more laid back pace
3. Crime in certain areas

Hope this helps

Small city/big town depends on your perspective. Not a lot to do but you can find something.
The city is under the leadership of a fool who will be locked up in a couple of years and the county is on the verge of the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history. Why am I telling you this? It gives you an idea of the leadership (or lack thereof).

is it still racists as hell
There's profiling in certain areas and a little friction with the "over the mountain" crowd, but nothing blatant.

are there good tech jobs
Depends, yes you can get a job pretty quickly depending on your background but the pay may no be what you expect. I guess it evens out due to the low cost of living in the area.

the housing market
Stick to the suburbs. The areas in town where you would want to stay are very expensive.

Birmingham is basically like any other city, they got clubs, malls, good neighborhoods, bad neighborhoods just about everything else any other city has. Most of the cities surrounding Birmingham are so close it feels like you're in the same place so if Birmingham doesn't have something a surrounding city does. Only real drawback is for stripclub lovers there is NO NUDITY :angry:

I see no one mentioned the crips & bloods and the hanging out at rite aids parking lots after everything else is closed. Its a real slow place but if you are a chilled hanging out on the porch drinking type of guy, birmingham is your place and the people are nice.

That's because all the white people live in vestavia, mountain brook, hoover. Whites left birmingham a long time ago. Atlanta is the ideal black city because of all the smart blacks run the government, city. Imagine if all the stupidest, ghetto, simp, blacks in your classes. Then you let those clowns run a city. That is birmingham

I agree with most of what’s been said. How much you like Birmingham will depend on what type of person you are and what you’re looking for.

Birmingham is a beautiful city. It’s the largest in the state of Alabama. There’s a church on every corner. Plenty of nice looking sisters. The University of Alabama has the south side of town on lock. So, if you like hanging out in a progressive college student oriented part of town, you can go there. The city has its traditions and events that everyone goes to (college sports, parades, summer music festivals, etc).

It has a number of problems right now due to a crazy new mayor and recent years of ineffective leadership from the previous mayor. The previous mayor let crime get out of hand and the waterworks board screwed up the management of the water and sewer system. So, the cost of water/sewer bills is astronomical. The mayor’s answer for the city’s problems was to increase the local sales tax to 10%. If you rent an apartment expect to get screwed on water/sewer bills.

Don’t live inside the actual city of Birmingham and you’ll avoid almost all of the problems. Depending on your pocket, try Riverchase (where Michael Jordan lived when he played for the Birmingham Barons), Trussville (where the new growth is), Mountain Brook (where Natalie Holloway lived), or Homewood. The closer you live to the city limits of downtown Birmingham, the more likely you’ll experience problems like crime and the high sales tax. The overall cost of living in Birmingham is very reasonable pretty much wherever you decide to live.

You are unlikely to experience racism like you might think in Birmingham. It’s a Black city with a Black mayor and a Black city council, Black police chief, etc. You will meet more Blacks than Whites on a daily basis. Atlanta is about 150 miles away. Chattanooga and Nashville are also reasonably close.

If your coming to Alabama move to Huntsville. Tech Jobs out the Ass around Redstone Arsenal. Birmingham tech jobs are mainly Wachovia, Regions, AT&T, Alabama Power and UAB. Checkout realtysouth for homes. Stay out of Ensley, Pratt City, Wylam Wenonah and other inner city neighborhoods. Look to the suburbs Trussville, McCalla, Hoover, 280, Shelby County.

I got a job offer from Adtran up there recently. I've been thinking about taking it but a lot of people who lived there says that there is absolutely nothing to do there.

Hoover is straight. I lived there before moving to ATL. I found out that unless you know people, it is boring as hell. Depending on your age, that can be either good or bad. Oh yeah, stay in the house on the day of the Alabama - Auburn game if it is in B'ham. I've never seen so many drunk white people in my life, and they were EVERYWHERE!!! And fights were popping off left & right. You will be asked who you are for, and what they mean is are you a Bama fan or an Auburn fan. And before you start hitting the nightspots, check with some brothas you work with to learn what the rep of the club is. I almost got my ass into a "wrong place, wrong time" situation by NOT doing that. I told a cat at work a few days later and he told me I was in the killing zone, because that spot was known for having a body hauled outta there.

Club flight opens only on thursday night its by Parker High and it grimey but cheap. 10 dollar cover and strippers come oout they close for lil of nothin. i had $40 dollat lasted 90 mins.
