Yearly BGOL Subscription - Ad Free - Your thoughts ...

What's up BGOL. I've decided to make BGOL an Ad free Subscription website. I'm probably going to kick the program off in the next 2 months. Here is the basic structure of the program:

1. $10 yearly membership fee
2. No fee for donors for 1st year and more depending on the donor.
3. New Registrations have free and full access for 2 months, then will have to pay a $10 yearly fee to keep access.
4. All Signatures will be enabled
5. The board will be totally Ad free
6. Big Time posters who drop the Porn Heat and the Latest Music, software and Information will get a waiver if the are not willing to give $10 yearly to the cause.

BGOL I'm tired of the monthly donation drive, if members are not willing to pay $10 a year to keep the board going, let it die. It's been a lot of fun running this board all these years but all things must end.

What I hope will happen
If we can get a constant 400 plus members on the board at all times I'll consider that a success. We usually have 900 - 1000, but it will be hard to maintain those numbers because all of the members bitching in this thread will not be around, regardless of what happens I'm cool with it.

The payment should be an entitlement by the way. That way you can keep the lurkers around. Let the lurkers have the main board maybe and move all the content to the appropriate boards and let the paying members only in those.

Realtalk, I think the ad revenue is worth keeping as an option. I can dig the subscription thing and have no problem coughin up ten ducats for a year's worth-- damn sure pays for itself in the posts and all-- but maybe with a subscription you can offer the board ad-free but keep the ads in for any free-heads (basically, they'll have to deal with ads out the ass in exchange for their free-lurkin).

If you can set up the board that way, then I have no problem, esp. if paying or contributin subscribers get VIP treatment like they should around here.

I will never make that type of money, I know for a fact that you will never give a dime to keep the board going and there are a lot of people just like you. That eliminates a huge chunk of cash right off the top. You are not concerned about the $10 it will cost you, you are not concerned about the board or the community, your only concern is what I may make.

I can honestly say I have never cared about what another man makes, all I ask for from any individual in business is good service, if I can get good service and a person that gives a damn, I wish them the best. That's my personality. We are all different.

Often long time members up here complain about how the board isn't like it was, because different people have left, maturation or just becoming accustom to one another...blah blah

This is how it will go
First year, just $5 cool...which might cut traffic by at least 25%. Cool, HNIC will get his money...blah, blah.
Next year...HNIC is like let me kick it up to $10...membership is naturally going to go down a little more, so that's at least another 33%

That 33% is important to the flow and energy of the board.

So again, we're the ones who make the board go. So all the shit talkers and intellectuals, if a percentage of them leave. That hurts the board. Frankly a lot of you all saying it's just $5-$10. Yeah, it's just $5 or $10, but most of you guys are boring(no offense) and nobody comes to the board because of you anyway.

So yeah, it would be cool at first, but you would continuously lose members and once you lose them, they aren't coming back.

I don't think having a members only entrance will work. Years ago, HNIC had a members only section before. Maybe instead of having a members only section, you can designate certain members as superposters like SLAM. Then, only members can see SLAMs posts or download links. May take some extra coding, but,as a programmer I'm sure it can be done.

$10/yr membership = ~$0.84/month

He wants to have about 400 constant members to be a 'success':
400x.84 = $336/month

If server bills are $700/month and is the reason for this change, how does this equal a success? Unless server bills drop to below $300/month from the reduced traffic and resources this site will require.
