SAN ANTONIO - Knicks great Patrick Ewing was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in his first appearance on the ballot.

Upon being summoned to the dais at the announcement ceremony here at the Final Four, Ewing smiled and said "this means a lot. I'm being recognized for all the blood, sweat and tears I put into a 17-year career.

"This is a dream come true," he added.

Ewing, now an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic, received a tribute and warm reception at the Garden Sunday night when the Magic and Knicks played. He is being enshrined with Adrian Dantley, Hakeem Olajuwon, former Knicks coach Pat Riley, Immaculata College coach Cathy Rush and announcer Dick Vitale.

Ewing will become the 13th Knick player to be inducted and first since Bob McAdoo in 2000. He finished his career in 2000 as the Knicks' No. 1 all-time scorer and rebounder and their leader in many other categories. He had his No. 33 retired in 2003 after a 17-year NBA career.

Ewing has been mentioned as a candidate to be an assistant coach with the Knicks if Mark Jackson is hired by new president Donnie Walsh.

Although he never led the Knicks to an NBA title in his 15 seasons playing in the Garden, Ewing left an indelible mark on New York. A former No. 1 overall pick in 1985 after a storied career at Georgetown, he led the Knicks to the postseason for 13 consecutive seasons, four Eastern Conference finals and two trips to the NBA Finals, in 1994 and 1999. Although he didn't fulfill expectations - he was expected to lead New York to at least one title - he was called by Willis Reed, among others, the greatest player in team annals.

"We got to the mountain but never got over the top," Ewing said Sunday night about failing to win an NBA title. "It's something I wish I could have done for New York."

Ewing's career in New York ended in Sept., 2000, when he was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics in a multi-player deal. Since Ewing's departure, the franchise has made the playoffs only twice and has not posted a playoff victory since 2001.

Ewing, who turns 46 in August, was selected to the NBA's prestigious 50 Top Players of All-time team in 1996. He was a seven-time All-NBA selection and 11-time All-Star. Since his career ended, he has been an assistant coach with Houston and the Magic.

The ceremony will be held in September in Springfield,
Ma.

Indeed, saw it on Yahoo this morning. Mad love for this brotha's approach to the game. He definitely deserved it. The only cat that I know that sweat during warm-ups just like the game. Mad props.

This message is hidden because piff piff hooray is on your ignore list.

That faggot should be banned with the quickness.

Patrick Ewing would have had some titles if the Knicks had gotten Mitch Richmond
like they started to do.

i don't know if mitch would've made a difference. the bulls were a unstoppable machine. i actually believe that if you had all the players from the original dream team ( minus the bulls players ) and put them up against the bulls, the bulls would've won. jordan/pippen were the best possible combo of all time, plus the roll players did exactly what they needed to do to get the job done, also they were very well coached.

Point taken. But notice how the Bulls never swept the Knicks...all of the series were hard fought and a scorer like Richmond would have made a big difference for Knicks.

Double congrats to Adrian Dantley, who had to wait too long before finally getting in

(It's a crime that the late Dennis Johnson got passed over again.)

Congratulations. You knew he was a shoe-in for the nomination, but let's see if he gets voted in on the first go round.

That's the true measure!

Dat's wassup!! Great Post!! :yes::dance::yes:

They never sweep the Knicks cause the Knicks had the Hack Shaq rule on Mike. But real talk Pat deserves this honor and true congrats go out to the big man......

When i was a kid my rec center got season tickets to Georgetown home games.....i went to just about every one of them, he's the reason why the knicks is my favorite team (i know they suck...and see no progress being made in the near or far future, but it is what it is).

:smh: You mean to tell me that you honestly think that a team with Magic Johnson, Larry Bird,Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, David Robinsion, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler, and John Stockon would lose to any incarnation of the Jordan-era championship teams. Those teams would beat the Bulls by 20-30 points, if not more. You realize that Bird and Magic are right up there in terms of all time greatness with MJ, and on top of that even if you put the rest of the Dream Team up against the 72 win 1995-96 Bulls team, that lost two games to a great Seattle team in the Finals, you are still looking at some ass kickings. Rodman is an all time great defensive player and rebounder, and Toni Kukoc is one of the top European players ever, but even then the Bulls had guys like Jack Haley on their roster. Christian Laettner would have been a top 6-8 player on the Bulls teams and he didn't really see a ton of time during the Olympics. Come on man

look what happened after pat got traded.......
franchise has been a joke since fell the fuck apart...

all teams need a great player to lead them..
pat ewing was that great player...

why the fuck is in orlando on the bench and not at the garden..
is beyond me...

the knicks need to bring back pat ewing, john starks and charles ockley..

I'm talking about they BOTH deserve to be there because they had a competitive rivalry their entire careers..Not too many people say that. Their basketball careers are linked, so it's only right they go in together.
