Are NBA Announcers Really Necessary??

Do they have to talk every minute of every damn broadcast??
I sometimes wish they would just stfu and let us see the action
without them trying to tell us how we should think every day
minute the game is on

and they never really talk about what's going on , on the court
between the players

pure propaganda (of course, they are some on this board who love that)

I like NBA announcers for the most part even if I disagree with them, Bill Walton being the most notable exception. Dr. Jack Ramsey and Hubie Brown are especially good and knowledgeable without dragging down the show (like Larry Merchant does HBO Boxing).

I need one of those "Captain Obvious" pics for Hubie. Don't get to hear the others. Only broadcast I can stomach to pay for nowadays is the free ones on network TV. Refuse to pay somebody to talk my ears off.

99% of announcers are shoveling BS down your throat. And most of them are lying through their teeth

PS: Thanks for the intelligent response

back in the 10' satellite dish day I used to watch nba game on the direct feed. no commentators and full audio on the player from the court side mics. Now that Chick Hearn died i use the mute button for laker games.

Reading some of the responses, was the thread made on BGOL and then moved to the sports board?

You are mostly right about the announcers trying to sell propaganda. Especially on ESPN/ABC with the hype the machines they have for certain players. Sadly, it works most of the time.

I will say that the regional broadcasts are a little better but some of the announcers are dubbed as super homers (Tommy Heinsohn - Boston, Stu Lantz and Joel Myers - lakers, Johnny Kerr and Tom Dore - Chicago, and etc)

About 2 years or so ago, during an Orlando Magic summer league game, the NBA experimented with announcer free basketball, having extra microphones near the court so you could hear the action better. I guess that wasn't a big hit with the fans so they decided not to move that further along with the idea.

And it's not just the NBA.

Don't think it happens in the NCAA? Just listen to Bill Packer tomorrow in the NCAA Men's Final.

It's across the board in all sports. Like Piff said, it's even on the Soccer field

I think it's just more pronounced on a basketball court because it's an indoor arena and the court is only 94 feet (31.3 yards) long. Which isn't even half a football field or one third of a baseball diamond.

You can hear alot of shit on the bball court that you'd never hear on a football field.....if they'd just stfu

They can call me crazy or whatever, but for once, i'd like to hear the actual nuances of the game instead of Mike Breen telling me Dirk went up sooooo strong (when I KNOW he goes up like a biyatch), or that some wacked throwup shot was "beautiful"

shit i like when they had the real broadcasters like chick hern n' stu lantz that was a great time for a laker fan. RIP check his wiki that dude was down for the squad. i think some of these new guys get on tv cause they been in the league but that don't make em good at broadcasting a game, case in point, reggie miller.. reggie put in work no doubt, but im tired of him announcing games

i dont really care i think the problem is that basketball is constantly moving its not like baseball where its more slow paced so it helps to have good anouncers in basketball i would just prefer the play by play i have a friend whos father mutes the tv and turns on the radio when he watches the basketball game so all he gets is the play by play

i give chick hearn credit for being exceptional as a broadcaster in ONE area: chick hearn's mile-a-minute delivery doing play by play was unparalleled. sure he made occasional mistakes, especially as he got older, but being from a radio era he knew his job was to let you know what was going on with the ball.

in today's TV era, these bitches are 5 seconds behind the ball, or not at all.

on the down side, chick hearn was a complete fakers shill in all other aspects of calling a game. he couldn't be impartial or objective, instead he was a cheerleader.

i don't know shit about baseball, but i know that vin scully kicks chick hearn's ass all around a radio microphone.

Chick wasn't worse than Bob Costas was with the Bulls..

BIG difference. southern california viewers had to listen to chick hearn do all 82 games. bob costas with the bulls was a sometimes thing that maybe happened when the bulls were on national TV.

unless you're talking about bob costas doing bulls games in 1980. but i don't think you're old enough to remember that!

I used to try that too. But it doesn't always work. For one thing, sometimes there's a slight delay between TV and radio, so many times the radio guy will annouce something before it actually happens on the TV screen. It happens the other way around as well. Can actually get confusing.

Plus, radio announcers certainly don't run their traps any less than TV guys do.

I don't think announcer is necessary to the broadcast at all. As long as they're flashing stats on every dead ball, the play by play guy is useless

Half the time, he doesn't even know what's going on. He simply repeats whatever the stadium announcer says. I know Marv was notorius for that shit

Do you see the NCAA's tonight?? Them cats were running their traps from start to finish. Even post game with the trophy, the guy doing ALL the talking is a fucking announcer

Somebody should've snatched that mike and starting rapping or singing or something!! (but we know that would've been his LAST nationally televised game for sure)
