What did African American Women do to West Indians, Africans, White People, Black Men...

This post stemmed from reading different post throughout the BGOL/SOL boards and a few encounters I have experienced since moving to the east coast.

I am originally from Los Angeles born and raised... and I am not saying we don't have our own issues but one thing I can say is our parents didn't raise us to hate certain groups, races, and/ or sexes.

*thinking* Wait I am lying my grandmother did throw out the occasional "white people are evil" lollllll but can yall blame her?

Anyways since moving to the east coast I have encountered so many west indians and africans who have this general disgust for AA women. I've heard everything from we are lazy to we can't cook to we don't work to we are triffling and dumb to we are Gold Diggers.

Someone said this in a recent post, "growing up in the caribbean, american women were not looked upon favorably."

I mean I would like to think I'm a good woman, I mean not only do I know God I have a relationship with him and he teaches me to love all...

I cook... but I don't just meet a dude at the club and bring him to my home and break out a Thanksgiving Dinner for his ass.

I work... for many years I held down 2 and 3 jobs untill I graduated from college then I got that one good paying job.

I am not only book smart... I am street smart as well.

I am independent I don't have time to beg no man for money. I am an only child, my father raised me to know that you work for what you want.

All of these qualities that I posses as a Black Queen, I didn't just wake up with them. They were taught to me by my mother another Queen. I also had other Queens as examples: my God Mother, My Aunts, My mothers friends, the women in my Church, the list goes on...

So back to the topic: What did African American Women do to be be hated by so many?

I don't think they have done anything per se, but African Americans are the most televised and globally public, people of African decent on the globe, due in part to the expansiveness of the American media globally through Hollywood amongst others.
If you know nothing of such people other than what you see from the media your perception is prejudiced. Then when you come into contact with them and you see the some of the negative stereotypes it only reinforces what you were taught about said people. The fact is that the the negative stereotypes of African Americans that are publicized are prevalent in all peoples, but the world is fed a diet of negative ones which are supposed to represent African Americans.
If you add to that the very introspective view of the world that Americans, both black and white appear to have you have plenty of scope for misunderstanding between the cultures of America and the rest of the world.
Even if you ask white people in the UK about their perception of white Americans you will often get disparaging remarks, so I don't think that it's totally race specific.
Hey the USA is arguably the world super power and does exercise a disproportionate influence in the world both good and bad so there's got to be some kind of flip side to it no?
On a personal level, if you ask me my perception of America, you would get indifference, But ask me about any specific Americans I have come into contact with I have nothing but good things to say about 99% of them. So I'm guessing perception and reality are very different!!!
That's my 2 pennies worth...

The problem with your question is that it is filled with generalisations. I suspect you have not met the majority of whites, West Indians or any other group. Further I suspect those you have met are themselves guilty of accepting media driven generalisations. The media has spent considerable time slating all things black and our women are no different. It's the oldest trick in the book: divide and conquer!! You now see yourself as different from West Indians or even Africans, which you are not.

It is very destructive to base any opinion on generalisations. I could say all Americans are dumb-ass, war mongering, full of shit fools. But I would be basing that on your president which you guys re-elected and some of the less savoury comments posted on this very site.

Fact is I know your president and some of the guys on this site do not represent the total or even the majority of Americans. I have many relatives in the USA and the women particular are strong, hard working and (LOL) able to cook.

You really should not waste your time with those who choose to generalise as you too will fall in to the same category as them…..DUMB.

P.S. Nice tits.

I dare not waste my time teaching my children ignorance by telling them negative things about another race or culture. There are to many other important things to teach children.

I like West Indian culture. I wish we as African Americans had some sort of culture like every other race. When I think of African Americans and the term culture I think of Soul Food... I can't think of anything else that I can truly say is our own. We were taken from our land and forced to learn a European way of life. White people quick to say "Go Back To Africa if you don't like it"... but real talk even if we wanted to we can't go back to Africa, they don't want us lollllll

We all come from a different way of life. We all have our struggles...

I'm an East African woman ... and a Canadian ... I don't have anything against African American women ... I sort of always thought Black women everywhere had the same struggles ... doesn't make sense that we hate on each other:smh:

African Americans have culture. I can give you some links on the subject if needed. This is to start you off....African American culture is indigenous to the descendants in the U.S. of survivors of the Middle Passage. It is rooted in Africa and is an amalgam of chiefly sub-Saharan African and Sahelean cultures.

Although slavery greatly restricted the ability of Africans in America to practice their cultural traditions, many practices, values and beliefs survived and over time have incorporated elements of European American culture. There are even certain facets of African American culture that were brought into being or made more prominent as a result of slavery; an example of this is how drumming became used as a means of communication and establishing a community identity during that time. The result is a dynamic, creative culture that has had and continues to have a profound impact on mainstream American culture and on world culture as well. After Emancipation, these uniquely African American traditions continued to grow. They developed into distinctive traditions in music, art, literature, religion, food, holidays, amongst others.

I didn't read all of this post and I didn't have to. You should never underestimate the power of White Supremacy and it's child, Black Inferiority and it's brother Sexism. Black women catch all three. First you're fucked up just because you're Black. Then you have other Black people, some from other countries and some from here, who have been brainwashed to only think the worst of you. Then just being a woman can be a "strike".

There is no need to let this disturb you one second further. You can't change every person but you can take care of yourself and live your life. People are going to judge you no matter what, so fuck 'em.

Prejudice is the biggest issues here and in today's society there's no room for for it. It's bad enough we have to fight for our human rights. Its even worse when we elect to fight among ourselves.

It's the crabs in a basket mentality. Having worked a number of years (25) with a very diverse work crew consisting mostly of women I can tell you its nothing anyone did. However much of it stems from stupidity, ignorance and jealousy.

This is not limited to just the women you have questions with. I've even seen it with Panamanian women. So the stupidity, ignorance and jealousy is not regional it's borderless. Its not limited to the islands as you might think. The only women I've never seen get involved in that crap are Asian.

What everyone seems to miss is we blacks are all looked upon the same way by our bosses. (I'm not going into details.) So its better to work at getting along and talking out whatever problems seemingly exist. Most of the time its petty nonsense.

1) It's not just Carribean women that look down on African Americans (it's not just women, it's men too). Immigrants (some, not all) look down on African Americans. They feel that we're lazy, shiftless etc.. There are immigrants who scrape money together to make the move to America, then move here, work the most menial jobs, and end up with a corner store / cleaners and put their children thru doctors. The thinking is that their is something wrong with black people, because they don't take advantage of their situation.

Combine that with negative stereotypes that are perpetuated, and you have a problem. It's stupid when you think about it, those same immigrants who look down on black people forget that they have lazy people in their country too. People who don't work, and don't try to better themselves.

Admittedly, it is worse in other countries. The living conditions in some third world countries are horrible, it should be a wake up call for anyone living in America, it should make them realize that they have to take advantage of every situation to get ahead.

Unfortunately, it's worse when Africans / African Americans / Carribeans look down on one another because we're all from the same blood line. We should be trying to build each other up.

But, one thing to note: Carribeans and black people from the South have a tendency to be a lot more old school than black people who live in cities. Home life is a lil different (discipline, cooking etc...). If you as a black woman, who was born and raised in the states can cook, clean, take care of her man, etc... then you're part of a select few. There are lots of women out there who can't do that.

What you said is very true, a lot of immigrants look down on AA's because they don't feel we take advantage of what American has to offer.. but in reality Immigrants have more opporunties than we do because they are that.. IMMIGRANTS... an exploited work group or groups that come here already with a support system.. Our communities lack that bond that theres have...

But in your reply, it was almost like you subconsciously associated black with lazy and things like that, because you said they have people like black people who are lazy... etc... How about they have people in their own countries who could possibly feel themselves to be oppressed by the majority. In several cultures there are divides between poor and wealthier people, with the poorer people being labeled as lazy etc... I'm not sure if I'm making sense to anyone else.. but it makes sense in my head...

All I can say is that someone who is among the young educational and social Black elite in America, those who point to the rise of Black women in America need to realize that most of these women are first and second-generation West Indians and Africans.

You are making sense, but I think that I was a lil unclear. I'm not saying that black people are lazy, I'm saying that SOME are. People who accept these stereotypes assume that all Black people are like that, but they forget that the same negative qualities they assume that all Black people have, they can find those within their own culture.

This is exactly what she's talking about. People like you who have nothing good to say about AA women.

I have gotten nothing but love from West Indian men and women. Especially the men. :D

I've had the same experience but I know that it's mostly a physical thing and that Americans in general are looked down upon by West Indians...Some thing about our work ethics and our culture in general. I think it's all nonsense and I think its sad that they indulge themselves in these stereotypes.

Fuck you talking bout?? I'm American. Generations deep in this bitch, so deep I got blisters on my fingers from when my ancestors picked cotton. I have PLENTY positive to say about AA women, hell ALL women of ALL colors and ALL religions, so you can kick rocks with that.

What I said is statistically provable and is THE TRUTH. IF you look at the Black population at the top schools in the nation (Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, MIT, etc.), the percentage of first and second-generation African students are of a substantially higher percentage than their actual representation in American society. And since there are more Black women in colleges, that translates across gender. I know what I say because i wrote a published article about this is 2003, so I've done my research.

Blacks at Ivy League schools are over three times more likely to be immigrants than blacks in America's general population, a study published in February's American Journal of Education and coauthored by Princeton researchers suggests.

Within the United States, first and second-generation black immigrants make up 13 percent of the total black population. In contrast, data from the National Longitudinal Study of Freshmen found that international black students either first or second-generation made up 23 percent of blacks attending public universities and 41 percent of those attending Ivy League schools.

Success does not come from what school you go to. Success is determined based on what you do after.
And if you're so intelligent and part of the "elite" why do feel the need to curse to get your point across.
And statistics are just that. Numbers. They can swayed to make any point you want them to. Also, 23 and 41 percent is in no way a majority.

Maybe, but an Ivy League education gives you a head start on everyone else. Take a course at a community college, and then take the same class at a university, you'll see the difference.

Numbers show trends, there's is reason why the percentages don't match. Statistics will help identify trends, and in some cases the cause of these trends. There is reason why the percentage of black immigrants in the country don't match the percentages of black immigrants in ivy league schools, but that's been mentioned before.

west indians and africans
Those west indian negro's are something else,If I was you I wouldn't pay them no mind because alot of them are some self hating people.Africans I have no idea about they do what they do and I do what I do in passing.

:smh:I dont speak or deal with my mothers half of her family because their west indian ways are so hateful, fuck em.

A degree can only take you so far... and if you dont finish....which many people don't then you really go nowhere. And again anyone can manipulate the numbers to show some kind of trend. But would you mind explaining those reasons? I didn't catch those reasons. (I'm not being a dick I honestly wanna know).

I had a nice answer laid out for you, then something crashed. Plus, your avatar is distracting ....

Simple answer, the immigrants who do manage to make it to the states are generally more focused than normal. Great work habits, and their goal oriented. In some cases that attitude gets passed down to their children, who work hard to better themselves.

Oh, and you can't really manipulate numbers. You can manipulate the research used to obtain numbers, or leave out part of the data. The numbers that Leroy posted are probably correct. But the part that's left out: the majority of immigrants who make it here are focused on their goals. That's comparing a group of people who were taught the qualities needed to succeed, to everyone else. I'm sure that if you took a group of students, from the US and the Carribean, who were taught similarly, the numbers would end up being the same.

Hope that makes sense

It makes sense but I disagree....Even still his numbers do not represent a majority but the number are still impressive. I have to give it to some immigrants though. Those are some hard working mofos but they lose all respect when they open their mouths to talk mess about a culture they will never fully understand.

Never said a majority, but if 13 out of 100 Blacks in the US are 1st and 2nd generation foreign born, but 43 out of 100 Blacks in Ivy League schools are foreign born then you can't recognize the correlation?

I'm sorry. I thought that most meant a majority. My dictionary must be broken.

I agree. They forget that they some of their family member and former neighbors are lazy as hell too. Though in my experience the immigrants that I've spoken to, will talk about anyone who's lazy. Even members of their own family.

I'm sorry. I thought that most meant a majority. My dictionary must be broken.

Yes. Most of these women as in the women who are making up the substantial increase in Black women in higher levels of education. If you look at the percentages in 1985 and then look at them in 2005, the total number of Black women at these schools has increased and the PERCENTAGE of women who are 1st and 2nd generation foreign born has substantially increased. THEREFORE the majority of the women who make up the increase are 1st and 2nd generation foreign born Blacks.

In my experience, African Americans don't like non American Blacks too much either. The ones I saw anyway,in my predominantly black high school.

Speaking of major cultural differences, I lived in St. Thomas for a year and never heard them call one another 'nigga'.

As for laziness..I worked on a very large construction site and the ones I noticed were more prone to being lazy were the Haitians.

Before you declare that a rise in school attendance is a sign of anything other than a rise in school attendance, prove that the schools are producing anything other than people who have paid for a piece of paper stating that they attended the school and passed their classes. From the data I've read, the vast majority of US schools aren't producing anything worth bragging about.

You'd also have to prove that the black people attending those schools got in by their merit alone and not because of affirmative action.

Of course schools don't accept people solely on their academic accomplishments so whatever.

They didn't do anything to us (i'm from trinidadian), but growing up when you are told
all the negative things and the media reinforces that you tend to believe it. After coming
here I learn that its all been a generalization. There is stereotypical lot and there are those
who I wouldn't mind being involved with.
