10-12 thousand years ago the world was a much different place. The ice caps were much larger which would have locked up water normally found in the oceans and seas. This means that the coast lines we see today aren't where they would have been back then. Depending on the amount of ocean/sea level drop the coast lines could have been miles further out and areas we see as islands today could have actualy been connected to the mainland or at least the islands would have been much larger in size and therefore easier to travel to by boat. (Look at a world map that shows the continental shelves for an example)
Once the water levels rose with the sudden melting of the ice caps people could have found themselves now trapped on islands and much further away from the mainland than before.
