FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (AP) -- The man whose killing of a 6-year-old girl once made him the youngest person in modern U.S. history sentenced to life in prison accepted a plea deal Tuesday in a robbery that occurred while he was free on probation.

Lionel Tate, 21, is already serving 30 years behind bars because the robbery of a pizza delivery man violated his probation in the murder case.

Under an agreement with prosecutors, Tate pleaded no contest to a robbery charge in the May 2005 pizza holdup but will serve no additional prison time.

Defense attorney Jim Lewis said the 10-year sentence on the robbery charge will run at the same time as the probation violation sentence.

"This is definitely a good outcome for him and hopefully it's not the end," Lewis said. He said he will continue to press to reduce Tate's total sentence to 10 years.

Tate was 14 when he was sentenced to life in prison for the 1999 killing of Tiffany Eunick, which happened when he was 12. His lawyers initially claimed the girl died accidentally when Tate imitated pro wrestling moves he had seen on television.

An appeals court overturned his first-degree murder conviction in 2004 after determining it wasn't clear whether Tate understood the charge. He was freed from prison under a deal in which he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years' probation.

If Tate had been convicted after a trial of the robbery charges, he could have been sentenced to life in prison again. He is tentatively scheduled for release in May 2031, according to the state Department of Corrections. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend

In many states if you violate the terms of your probation, you go back to jail to serve the remainder of your original prison sentence. So if you get a 5 yr sentence and they SUSPEND that sentence and put you on probation, if you fuck up the original sentence becomes valid again and in you go for 5 yrs.

No, on the contrary. I do care and I will NEVER be where he is at. Me & my siblings were raised the same way. We all became different types of adults. We all choose to do things differently. I don't know the reason for that. But when one of them fucked up, I still had love, but he fucked up. He has to pay the costs. PERIOD. Stop making excuses. I care so I take care of the next generation and provide guidance where I can. But murder and armed robbery after someone had mercy on you? Dude spent nearly half of his life in prison. The most formative yrs of his life was spent being raised by the prison system so what kind of social skills or sense of reponsibility/consequence did y'all think he was gonna have when he got out?

Think about it, he went to prison when he was 12yrs old, so who he is today as an adult will always be a product of the prison system.

To me he's a victim in all of this. The life he is living right now he did not choose it, more so due to cirucmstance it was chosen for him. Prison does not reform people, it just makes u a far worse crimminal than when u had originally went in.

YES HE DID KILL THAT GIRL. I'm not saying at 12 years old he should have the best judgment, but that poor baby he killed had injuries that ANY child knows are going to hurt someone. You can not excuse this behavior. If it was your baby girl beaten to death like that I'm sure you would say that boy killed her. Read up a little bit on the case before you decide to play down this killing. He may not have planned to kill the girl, but he did.

He did not spend half of his life in prison. He was first sent to prison at the age of 14, released at 16 or 17 on house arrest & probation which was supposed to last for 10 years, and he violated house arrest and was caught with a gun. That's 3 years of his life in prison before he was released. He was sent back after violating parole. What else do you want?

I may have bought your claim that he is a victim after the girl was violently beaten and killed if he had shaped up and tried to improve his life the best he could, but I would never agree with you on that now. I didnt read most of the replies so im not sure if this has been addressed much but this kids fate was all but sealed the minute the idiotic judge in his original case sentenced him as an adult (he was sentenced to prison if memory serves me correct, please correct me if im wrong). He was cannon fodder in the war called Life at that point and I predicted this kids outcome that very day. There were countless debates filled with both outrage, and satisfaction after the outcome of the original trial. I thought then and i still do now, that this kid got fucked over by the judicial system. They have themselves to blame for this mess and any blind man with half a clue saw this coming.

More info: the boy is of Jamaican heritage. His is the product of a single-mother household. The girl who he killed was also the child of a single, Jamaican mother. Black men you have to do more than pay child support (if you even do that) when you father a child. Not saying that's why he did it, but who knows?

Also the kid was offered a lighter sentence than life initially but his lawyer rejected it.

realest thing posted here. everything isnt always black and white. there are a lot of things that led to this kid's demise. whether or not he was to be charged as an adult, while that ruling came down, he should not have been in the system. he may have had "animal" tendencies, but it was all but a wrap once they put him in with the real animals. we all knew there wouldnt be a happy ending here.
