My Letter
*clears throat*

dear Tavis,

this email will not be rude or ignorant. i have always respected you for bringing untold ideas and black issues to public forums, but you must know that the public tirade against barrack hurts us all. he is the future, the start of what can be and you are aligning your reputation along the lines of people who potentially want to bring him down. you must know the long term effects of what you are doing to your legacy and our chance to level out the playing field. this is bigger than barrack, my mind is geared towards after him who else and so on, but you want a hot topic it seems to bring a bigger audience to you. i believe you care, but don't be blinded by your own greatness. don't diminish our respect for you just back off the public grand standing and speak with him in private council like the big boys are suppose to do Mr. Smiley. Lastly whats the worst that he can do as president compared to what you are doing because you have chosen a fight at the worst possible time? i believe in not just barrack but the future 20-50 years away that he represents, the start of what this country needs to be, but Tavis you have shown publicly the same mentality that has us here now in the state of black America. just stand down man, don't add any more fuel to this scar on your legacy brother.

Let me begin by saying i have never been a fan, I have never once agreed with you, but you are a fellow black man so I have supported u publicly for that reason alone.
I now ask u to extend to Senator Obama the same consideration. If u can not do that I ask you to silence your ridiculous opposition to the first viable candidate we as a community have ever had.

Thank you the email address. Here is my letter I just sent. I used your email as a lauching pad.
Good morning Mr. Smiley. I have watched your show on BET and PBS, I watched the State of the Black Union address last year. I have not agreed with many of the statements you have made on your shows and at your addreses. As a fellow black man, I do appreciate your efforts in trying to improve the African American community . I have supported you publicly and encouraged others to at the least watch clips of your interviews on youtube. I now ask you to extend to Senator Obama the same consideration. I dont think that you should be airing out Senator Obama like this because he will not attend the address. Its disappointing that inspite of record turnouts in the democratic primaries by African Americans, you choose to publicly disagree with someone who identifies with the exact sentiments you outlined in your book. If you can not disagree respectfully, I would like to respectfully request that you to cease with your ridiculous opposition to the first viable candidate we have had as a community since Rev, Jackson. As a union member I am aware that one of your major sponsers is Walmart, one of the most anti union companies in America. I was willing to overlook that because I wanted to support a fellow brothers efforts. But after you declined Michelle Obama's request to attend your address. I see you in a different light now, I will no longer support you until you offer a public apology. You sir, should be ashamed of your recent behavior towards the Obamas.

Tavis,

I have been a listener and fan of your show for a minute, but I'm a little bit troubled over this dispute you're having with The Obama Campaign over the State of the Black Union Summit. I have lived in Cleveland, Ohio for most of my life and I can tell you first hand of the problems that we face here, as well as across the country, and Barak Obama is the only candidate that speaks to my concerns. That being said, I would like to see you two come to an understanding, and stop the public bickering over a matter that is understandable by most rational people. Obama has the potential to really win this thing, and as an Ohio resident, I know how hard of a time he's going to have here. That's why I completely understand why he would want to focus his energy on the upcoming states and races. I know you're a smart brother, and I'm sure you wouldn't want to stand in the way of progress, so I'm hoping that this matter can be resolved without any more unnecessary media attention being involved. Thank you for your time. Peace.

i just sent my joint

Tavis,
This email is reference to the ongoing between the Obama camp and your ego. Please stop embarrassing yourself and our community. You are not an arbiter of what's black. Also, contrary to what you believe, an African-American candidate does not have to go through you to get to the White House. Please stand down. Thank you.

Here's my E-mail...keep 'em coming guys! My first line is an outright lie but oh well. I felt that he had so many hate mails coming to him that after awhile he'd start clicking delete after the first line...it's the classic bait and switch.

Dear Tavis,

I have been a loyal fan through-out the years and I think you’ve been doing a great service to our people over the years and I thank you for that. But over the past few days I’ve been seeing your dislike and/or hatred for Senator Obama cloud your vision and blind you from the utter greatness that is having a Black Man running for president. The fact is, he is truly a contender in this race and we need all the support we can get. I’m not asking you to support blindly just because we all share the same skin tone because that would be silly. But what I am is asking is for you to stand down as your negative attacks on Obama could affect change. Change that can affect not only the Black community but the American people as a whole in a positive way. So please, do it for all of us Tavis stand down…this petty beef with Barack is not worth subjecting us to another 4 years with the same establishment players. Good Day.

Dear Mr. Smiley...

The recent news of your apparent rift with the Obama’s over your desire to have the potential nominee for the President of the United States present along with Hillary Clinton, for some form of debate or discussion concerning the interest of the Black populace of America, at this time is not practically in the best interest for us, because by virtue of Mr. Obama being of African descent, and him having the greatest opportunity at this time to solidify his position as the front runner for the democratic nomination…he is serving our best interest of advancement and opportunity. So get off your high horse.

And for you feeling that the presence of Mrs. Obama in the place of her “busy” husband as being “inappropriate”, has got to be one of the most destructive “acts” that could have been done to widen an already “enormous” gulf between Black Men and Women as far as respect for one another is concerned. Mrs. Obama would have been a fine substitute for what her husband represents, and I feel that the only reason you objected to her presence is due to only “You” wanting to feel special at the “Expense” of the Black populace for having the candidates at your show. Again “Get off your high horse”! And you should publicly apologize to us for exhibiting your “Selfishness.

Signed:
A concerned Black Man in America.

Damn you said a whole lot in only 2 sentences.

This is what I sent:

Yo, Tavis, you need to correct yourself when it comes to Obama. You owe him and Michelle an apology. If that man can't make it, then he can't make it. Michelle goes to rallies when he can't make it, so if he asks her to represent him at your event you should accept that. You have angered me and alot of others by your actions. In case you don't know, people are all over the internet talking about this. This is a chance for America to change and I think you need to be helping instead of hating. Shame on you Tavis.

You aint no real brother!

Dear Mr. Smiley,

I am writing in regards to your outward display of disdain for Sen. Obama. Now I am all for the freedom to support or not support any candidate that you may choose, but it seems as if your personal issues with the brother is leading you to become a thorn in his side for some reason. I purchased and read "The Covenant..." and have almost always supported you as a black man in America. We haven't always shared the same opinions and beliefs, but nonetheless, I lent you my support. This isn't an ultimatum or anything, I just think that the black community needs unity if nothing else right now. If Martin and Malcolm could publicly set aside their differences for the betterment of the race, I'm sure you could do the same.

Sincerely,
Your Brother

To whom it may concern;

I applaud the Smiley Group, and Tavis Smiley in particular, for creating an organization that takes part in addressing problems that plague the black community. The platform created is valuable, often times it serves as a beacon of light among a black backdrop. I understand the value and acknowledge the contribution, however I am gravely disturbed by the, perceived, eagerness to further the conflict with Senator Obama regarding his attendance at SOBU. I caution those in the Smiley Group to be mindful of how fickle our audience is... Obama represents an amazing dream for blacks and an incredible healing opportunity for whites. Bob Johnson made a mistake- not by coming out as a Hillary supporter, but by coming across as a Hillary attack dog, be mindful not to do the same. Given the tight nature of this race it's obvious where Obama's focus needs to be. Polling shows that Obama, wherever he campaigns, inspires voters and gains supporters. Taking a day or more from an already tight schedule in order to appear at this or any conference, that's not talking place in Texas Ohio or Wisconsin, does not make sense. Furthermore, the pressure your applying makes you look- not like a Hillary supporter, but a Hillary STRATEGiST.

In closing,I have stood behind you on many issues and I will continue to do so to the extent that I am convinced your current position is not politically motivated. If I'm forced to be honest I have already begun to view you, on this topic, as overly emotional and compromised. I sense that Hillary is applying pressure... Obama's reason's for not attending SOBU are sound, his decision to abstain was even reverential yet you still persist to antagonize.

Hey......awesome thread!

I enjoyed reading your emails guys.....I'm proud of a bunch of people I don't know on a porn board....gotdamn, these are some strange days.

Just sent an email;

Dear Mr. Smiley,

Having been a fan and strong supporter of yours throughout the years I must express my grave disappointment with your recent decision to decline Michelle Obama a seat at the SOTBU.

Calling her presence at this function "inappropriate" strikes me as a petty move that displays either; (a) your inability to understand how close this race is and the stakes involved, or (b) a willful and miscalculated attempt on your part to present yourself as some sort of gatekeeper. Michelle Obama has been attending functions on behalf of her husband over the last year. She is a highly capable substitute in this circumstance and you are depriving your audience of hearing a powerful, intelligent black woman speak.

Some honest questions. Do you understand the significance what Obama is trying to achieve? Have you lost sight of what his candidacy means to the very people you claim to represent? Is it difficult to understand that a presidential candidate has to navigate a virtual minefield when it comes to issues of race? Are you aware that every minute is crucial in an election as close as this one especially considering the number of delegates up for grabs?

Step aside Tavis. The timing of this event couldn't be worse. Hillary is there because she HAS to be there....both to bolster her credibility with a "demographic" (that's all we are to her...I can assure you) and to take advantage of the free publicity. Wake up, step aside, and don't let your need to be seen as an arbiter for the black cause derail the most important event of my lifetime.

Sincerely,

Mine:

Dear Tavis Smiley,

It's time we all demonstrate more political maturity about what it takes for all of us to advance collectively in this nation. I and many others in my circle of friends and family have long admired your work, but this hardheaded, ego-driven pissing match with the Obama campaign is exactly the kind of childish and destructive action that has undermined every significant African-American social movement of the last three centuries.

I understand the logic that the State of the Black Union is a public forum to discuss issues of importance to the African-American community. But to take offense that a man chose to announce his presidential candidacy instead of attending (as with SOBU 2007), or chose to continue campaigning in vital states in the heat of a neck in neck primary (as with 2008) instead of attending, is the kind of egotism that pitted DuBois against Washington and Garvey, Elijah against Malcolm, etc. and continues to destroy our people.

Mr. Smiley, you cannot be naive enough to overlook the “help” you are giving the Clinton campaign, which is desperately trying to win back black voters after the subtle race-baiting remarks of both Mr. Clinton and Sen. Clinton–-by turning down Michelle Obama’s request to attend in Sen. Obama’s stead as “inappropriate.” Is this really about questioning Sen. Obama’s commitment to Black America, or about your feeling miffed and snubbed in your self-appointed role as Race Spokesperson and Gatekeeper? And dont think that many of us havent noticed Wal-Mart's role in sponsoring some of your airtime, and the conflict of interest that poses in your embrace of Sen. Clinton and your rebuke or Mrs. Obama.

Furthermore, its time African-Americans show the sensibility to stop “calling each other out” i.e. airing our disagreements in very public ways, when our leaders and elders should be ironing out differences behind closed doors and presenting a united front. Our Jewish American fellow citizens, a VERY small minority of the population, have overcome significant prejudice in this nation by being mature enough economically and politically to close ranks and discuss differences–even strong ones, passionate ones–among themselves. A house divided against itself falls, and a house that announces division basically dares its opponents to exploit that division.

Smarten up Tavis, this immature and emotional tantrum you are throwing at a critical juncture in the Obama presidency is selfish, counterproductive, and damaging to your reputation, no matter what self-justifications your ego has convinced you to embrace.
I can assure you if you do not find an amicable and respectful way to resolve your differences with this man who you so generously hosted on your program not even six months ago, I will be doing a 180 and withdrawing any support I’ve given you, your program or your literature, and I will be encouraging all friends and family (which have been passionate supporters of your work and career in the past) to do the same.

It’s chess not checkers, Tavis. Grow up and stand down.
