Completely false, their power derives from the fact that many people don't know about their existence. Only because of the technological age that we live in are people only now hearing and learning about them.
Despite this, people still refuse to give it actual consideration because they also have control of media and other educational outlets which makes it harder for people to accept them as a reality because their version of a manufactured reality has been created for them and is harder to discredit because it is all they know.
I'm uncertain to as why you dismiss the fact they're not a threat when as each day passes the reality of a Totalitarian world and police state here in America is looming closer and closer.

We know too much about the illuminati for it to be a threat. At best it is just a decoy from even bigger organisations. the illuminati traces itself to 1776 they are by far bigger organisations that control world governments. The illuminati cannot be a threat for the simple fact that it doesn't have it's hand in all world governments. The fact is the amount of people who don't care or don't know outweigh the people who listen and give some credence to the idea.

Another monkey then tries to get the banana and again they're squirted with water. After time passes, when another monkey tries to get the banana the monkeys begin attacking him because they don't want to be squirted. After awhile two monkeys are removed and two more are added.
Those monkeys see the Banana and try to reach for it but are attacked by the two other monkeys that know what will happen if he tries to get the banana. This cycle repeats over and over again with new monkeys being introduced into the cage with others who were attacked. Nobody asks why they are attacking other monkeys who are getting too close to the banana anymore, because as far as they know that is how it has always been.
That is a mirror image of how our society works

I used to believe a lot of the those conspiracy theories when I first started college and began reading up on them (A New World Order, Behold a Pale Horse, etc.). Like someone said earlier, most of the evidence used to prove their existence is nebulous at best and if you start to go into their motivations all you get is circular logic.
I do think there are powerful organizations who hold limited sway behind the scenes but they are not as powerful and omnipotent as a lot of people believe.

I don't know about Illuminati/NWO, but i sure believe in secret conspiratorial organizations and life outside of earth. (if we are the only one who exist in this universe, we could be the most selfish being in this universe.)
I just don't believe that rich powerful people have to congregate and form organizations for the intent of controlling the world. Most of the world is dictated by market forces, and even more specifically personal greed....so why would all of these rich and powerful people want to come together and even remotely share an exclusive power? It makes perfect sense, you may not get it at first but basically it illustrates when people start asking questions and try to figure things out they're attacked by those close to them because the same thing has happened to them and has been perpetuated throughout our society subconsciously. After awhile people will stop asking questions and trying to figure things out because they know what will happen. Also after awhile no one knows exactly why they're ridiculing a person for what they're doing, it is just something they are used to seeing and doing.
