EXACTLY, I think the issue is that you only hear from the young voters when they feel inspired (and that ain't often). The fact that people are so shocked by the youthful exuberance displayed for Obama is more an indication of how stale and lame our political system had become and how little faith people had that their vote even counted for shit.
