My journalist cats: WHERE CAN I GET A PRESS/MEDIA PASS

it doesn't work like that. you can't just flash a pass at someone and they let you through.

you call ahead at an even, let them know who you are and what you're covering. the bigger and more clout the org you work for is, the more likely they are to acquiesce and hit you with a pass.

good luck.

If you lookin for an all purpose press pass you gotta go to the Sheriff's Department, they'll verify it through whatever company you work for that you can get one and you're set up.

Otherwise you gotta do like the new guy said.

what he said. you really need to be a member of a news organization that has a name for itself. These days a lot of bloggers get media credentials depending on how popular their blog is. But usually the people behind the event you're trying to attend will grant you access if you promote their stuff on a wide scale. The Associated Press will get a dozen or so credentials (or even more) to an event because it's a world wide known news agency that services other news outlets. A small town paper, on the other hand, may get one (or no) credentials because a larger paper in the area will likely cannibalize their coverage anyway.

The easiest way is to be an employee of a news organization or magazine.

exactly! the sheriff pass is a good start, but only for "public" events. parties, concerts, etc @ promoter/artist say so. basically, you just have to establish yourself. then they will be coming for you, and you won't need to ask!

when I was freelancing for newspapers after i got out of college you had to register with the NYPD and have an editor sign off on it. Also you had to have three published stories to acquire it. I had one and was able to flash the pass and get into anything back in the day but now with the blogs popping up I think the requirements are less strict.

Not sure if the site is legit or not, but you have to prove that you have some sort of legit media publication or broadcast/webcast.
