actually, i am VERY humbled. i've always been fascinated with outer world exploration. this post did nothing but make me want to study even more. thanks for this excellent post...i am truly in awe.

Antares is so damn big we seem like we should feel it's heat from the earth...
This is very very humbling and intriguing. I never really cared for science but I am learning to respect the fact that it is just too much empty space out there to think that we are all by ourselves. Ten years ago, I would have NEVER said that. Religion, will do that to you. I'm learning though.

I found this out first hand in August 2005. I was on a roadtrip and got lost one evening ... and trapped up in some mountainous highway stretch a few hours from home. I ended up driving for 5 FUCKING HOURS straight (and saw 2 cars) and looked around and all I could see was space ... space ... and more space. And empty road. Damn near lost my mind.
Felt like an ant about to get stepped on ... or a spec of dirt.

I feel so insignificant when I think about the whole universe and about how big it really is.
Some people believe there is no such thing as space at all. I remember some dude on BGOL saying that the "vacuum of space" meant space couldn't exist because the "vacuum" would suck everything away. Dude didn't know the difference between a vacuum (as in void) and a vacuum as in vacuum cleaner (and you wonder why folks want to keep the church out of science class).
99% of the scientific principals that allow you to even sit there and type what you just typed can't be "seen" and have to be accepted based on scientific theory. It's easier for some people to accept that some spook floating around someplace in "heaven" molded all this shit like playdoe than it is to accept scientific theory (with all the loose ends that shit entails to accept, cats are STILL skeptical of science).
Simple minds need simple things I guess.
